ASTON VILLA VS LIVERPOOL - The countdown begins

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby YAWL » Tue Aug 07, 2007 4:52 pm

I would like to see few new signings and the majority of players to be the ones from last season.  The main reason for this is because we want to hit the ground running.  We saw last season that Man U reaped the rewards for only having Carrick as a new player.  Their team looked settled, confident and they got off to a flier.

For this reason I'd go for something like this:-

---------------------Reina---------------------

Finnan-------Carragher------Agger---------Riise

Pennant------Sissoko-------Gerrard--------Kewell

---------------Crouch--------Torres------------

I think the back five pick themselves really.

I would like to see us take the game to Villa and really go out with the belief that we have better players are going to control the game and win.  It's a big pitch at Villa, so playing Kewell and Pennant wide should be beneficial.

Sissoko has had an impressive pre season and should start along side Gerrard for that reason.  Mascherano will probably start less games towards the beginning of the season due to Copa America.  Plus when Momo goes on African Nations he'll be needed a lot more.

Upfront Crouch and Torres for me.  Our best two strikers, who have different ways of playing so should compliment each other.

*Excitied* :)

Really can't see how we can win if we played like last year or like in the preseason. If we can't produce some "magic" or creativity to break down weak teams, we can't possiblity challenge for the title. No creativity to break down Villa equals a draw. I don't rate Villa highly, but then they can produce some fine form under certain circumstances.
My guess is:
Villa 1 - Pool 1

But if Momo Sisoko is playing:
Villa 2 - Pool 0

I always believe in football if you cannot score you cannot win. Though it could be different judging from response of some fans in the forum. Maybe in Premiership things are really different???  :O

Cheers.

???  ???  ???  So you expect Momo to score then??
Wow that is showing blind faith

Christ, its good to see all those "fans" already in their mid-season form of drama and criticism.  We haven't even kicked a ball in the league yet and half the lot on here are ready to throw in the towel, WTF? ?????

Now is the time for optimism, and hope.  Not negative slagging.  No one on here knows fack all what lineup Rafa is going to throw out there on Saturday, or what his tactical plan is going to be.

Save the god damn pitty party and slagging off for when we lose.

Alright lads,

i'm a villa fan (i'm on here because i've contributed to your "oppo" thread)

On paper your boys should beat us every time but i'm putting faith in how your lot usually start the season (the only reason i have any optimism against you) i notice some of you have been hoping for a 5-1 win - if that happens i'll come back on here and gladly take the abuse we'll deserve!

Last season we lost as many games as you did so we're pretty solid at the back (but taylor's in goal so employ a shoot on site policy  :veryangry )

Villa's major strength is in attack at the moment so if we're to stand a chance we have to go at you (hope that doesn't play into your hands!)

The optimist in me says 1-0 Villa (based on your usual early season form) the realist 0-0.

P.S. if that bluenose scum pennant gets near the goal i may well cry!

All the best for the season lads (after saturday obviously) i really want you to wipe the smug grins off them cocky mancs and cckney nobodies!

I'm pretty glad you said your major strength is in attack. I don't see you getting past our back four, and if you are attacking, we can score, we could score against attacking teams last year, were ganna score against defending teams as well this year!

3-0 win, torres, gerrard, agger. in that order :p

Sorry Sabre, but when i see stuff like this i have to quote it :D

I'm in a good mood today so feeling more optimistic than normal :D

I'm gonna go for a 2-1 win to us but I actually think it will be a good game to watch as I think and hope both teams will be attacking.

Mark my words, Rafa will go with two holding players, two wingers who can cut in and keep the full backs occupied, and gerrard as high up the pitch as possible with Torres playing on the defenders shoulders.

4-2-3-1

Reina

Finnan
Carragher
Agger
Riise

Alonso
Mash

Benayoun
Gerrard
Babel

Torres

The way i see it is there is no point in signing players if we are only going to use one of the new boys.  New blood is needed from the off and will get the existing players fighting for their places.

I think i would go

                              Reina

Finnan         Carragher          Agger         Riise

Pennant       Mascherano      Gerrard        Kewell

                       Kuyt          Crouch

I don't like starting new players in important games. Man U usually bring their new players on as subs in the second half when the sting has gone out of the game a bit and it usually works very well. I think we should do the same with Torres, Benayoun and Babel in this game. Nothing worse than having a great player's confidence dented in the first couple of tackles of their first premiership game. Its better to let them on against a team who have already been playing for 60 mins and might not be as sharp.

The big kick-off as they call it..... I'm full of optimism this season, we have more world class players than we've had in a long time. A fully fit Kewell is like a new signing and if he hits his straps early I believe he can have a major influence this term. Fingers crossed the new boys will adapt to the Prem' quickly......... I'm tipping a win at the Villa on Saturday but no scoreline predictions from me this year. I wouldn't mind if the winner came off Stevie Finnan's backside as long as there's 3 points come 4.45!
Roll on Saturday........
