Wasn't a Penalty wasn't a Free Kick wasn't a great performance but we got the points !

Stevie does it again, i am so relieved not just because we deserved to win but more because i could hear the "Slit our wrists brigade" already cracking their fingers ready to write doom and gloom posts as that Penalty hit the back of the net !!

I think it was a penalty.  I cant complain at the ref for giving that.  I didnt see Carra complaining either.

We should of won this on a canter.  Very good performance.  WE WON OUR FIRST GAME AWAY!!!!

Babel looked real sharp.  Momo looked like he was playing in a practice match or he was high on skunk.

Great Goal Great Season opener (a win at last!)

Mixed game for me ,no finishing play yet plenty of chances ,excellent right wing (finnan/pennant/babel) ,very avarage left side (arbeloa? i find no quality in the guy ,riise for me in decline) ,gerrard the god should have had a hat trick ,alonso weak game..but who gives a f@ck ,great win great goal.

Thank god we got the 3 points. Great goal by gerrard he saves us again.

My Ratings

Reina - Played well id never blame the keeper for a penalty. Did punch a few out though.

Finnan - Supported the rw as usual dealt with Agbonglahour well.

Carragher - Not going to blame him for the penalty. It struck his arm not hand ball. He made a few crucial tackles. Well played

Agger - Did his job as usual. No problems for me

Arbeloa - Had spells where he was awful but linked with Riise at times really well.

Riise - Looked good on the left wing supported the forward line when needed.

Alonso - He had an average game tbh. He did have a few passes go a bit wayward but did link up a few aswell.

Pennant - Despite being booed the whole game he kept his head. Supported the attack well aswell.

Kuyt - Didnt have much time on the ball. Did put the ball in for the own goal but other than that quite average

Torres - Created a few chances for himself and others. He should have finished 1 or 2 of his chances but that cud be down to nerves.

MOTM Gerrard - Once again our skipper has saved us. He looked great the whole game supported the attack came back to defend. Well done Gerrard great goal

Ok, first impressions after the final whistle:

The team look to be attacking much more than last season which is a great encouragement. We should have had 4 or 5 but even though we didn't take the chances at least we created clear cut chances. Last season it was all possession and maybe 1 or 2 half chances. There will be games where we take every chance and slaughter teams.

Kuyt and Torres looks like a good partnership. Kuyt was probably the man of the match (not counting Stevie saving us!). It wasn't just his persistence for the 1st goal, the stepover he did worked well with Torres and reminds me of last year when none of that came off with Kuyt/Bellamy.

Babel looks like he has a lot of potential. I get the impression he doesn't always have it under control but unlike Pennant he has the strength to hold the defender off. Can't really judge his final ball as he tended to shoot (rightly so in the positions).

The defence looked good until the end when the crosses came flying in. Even then we dealt with most of them. Couldn't be sure from the replay (not the best picture) where it hit Carra but the lack of protest probably means it was right.

The midfield worked well. Couldn't believe Sissoko though. Typified his performance at the end when he chose to take on a player instead of lay a 5 yard pass to Babel who could have hit it into the corner.

Overall much better than last season. Even though we made hard work of it we bounced back after the equaliser to go for the win. A refreshing change to giving up like last season.

Put aside the negatives, there were some yes...but the most important thing is that we ground out 3 points with a largely solid and hardworking display. All the rest can be worked on. Better that way than to have gone out and steamrollered them...falling into a false sense of security as a result, and thinking everythings a' ok.

Foundations, little acorns and all that..there is something to build on. Not least the confidence of an early away victory in the bag. Now that is a start at least.

First opening day win in five years, created chances, forwards all looked good, bar finishing but we'll get better, confidence building. Most importantly we won.
