These are the games where we need to put down markers. All too often we've had this "oooh...not sure about this one" feeling when we play away at places like Villa, but we need to be in a situation where we can just send 11 men out for 90 minutes and flat out know we're going to get a result.

I'll personally take a narrow squeak of a win, as we're still in that slightly awkward position of not knowing 100% who our first choice forward line is. If we drop points in the first game though, and all of our immediate rivals get wins, it probably isn't exaggerating too much to say that it probably won't be our season in the Prem.

On the flipside, if we can get 3 points each out of games against both Villa and Chelsea, we then have a reasonable-looking run of games until October, when we host Spurs, then have the Bluesh*te away, followed by Arsenal at home. At the moment, I still have that niggly feeling that we don't quite have the squad to avoid those stupid draws and losses that have eaten away at our chances in recent years. If we reach the end of October unbeaten though, things could look pretty interesting.

Looks like it might be a boring 0-0 draw....we usually start the season with a draw (esp in the last few years).

I remember we once beat crystal palace 6-1 on the opening day.... would be great if we stuffed villa by the same score...

guys guys guys we never start well, i predict a 1-1 draw. and we will not play attacking away from home so why even suggest it? he will want a boring centre mid defensive combination and gerrard out wide, this will be pretty close to our team

reina

finnan
agger
carra
riise

gerrard - right wing
mascher
alonso
kewell

kuyt
torres

its possibly he may even go one up top

To be honest i want more than a win. I want a statement. Last year was a disaster at the start when we were lucky to draw with Sheff U. The next day Man U went a f**king walloped fulham 5-1. Before that i was expecting Chelsea to be the team to beat but after that game i started to realise that Man U had a chance of winning it. A win will be great but we should be looking for the best start to the season for a good few years. I want us to out play villa and win well. Drawing will just send out a message that away from home we will struggle to break teams down.

Well, with all the speculation about Eto and Torres signing when the 2006/07 season ended, at least G&H can claim that we will have Villa at the start of the 2007/08 season.  :D

FWIW, I predict a 0-0 draw after dominating the entire 90 mins, missing chance after chance.

I predict a riot on here afterwards as well.

I think it will be a hard game, but if we want to be in contention these are the games we have to win. I think we will win it but only after a struggle. Torres and Kewell to score in a 2-0 win.

Here we go after many troubled starts to the last few seasons i think this one will get of to a good one. It would also be nice to get a good win and performance in before that chelski bunch come into town.

Reina
Finnan
Carra
Agger
Abbola
Riise
Masch
Gerrard
Pennant
Crouch
Torres

3-1 away win
here we go another nail chewing nervouse season oh yes and if we don't win the league which would be great but maybe a tough call this season, then i feel second is up for grabs.

Come on :buttrock

Have to go along with that. We're notoriously slow out of the blocks and unfortunately we always play the first game away.

It's a shame but you're right about the riot as well :(

I am not sure about playing our new signings as the 2 forwards (Assuming it's 4 4 2). At least one of Crouch and Kuyt must play I think. We all know what can happen on first day jitters.

Also, it's not the end of the world if we don't win. Regardless of what everyone says, I believe you can't lose the title on the first day.

I think we'll win this one, we have a good record at Villa park and they don't seem to have improved much over the transfer period. We might even blow them away, I just think the mood in the camp is so high, and if we do well in this Rotterdam tournament then we could be in for a really good start to the season.

Torres

Bring it on 2-0 Gerrard and Torres

Probably go with that, I might spell Mascherano right though. We have to play two up front away from home, none of this cagey :censored:. We need goals, even if we go down 2-1 away from home it's better than going goalless.
