Wouldn't have mattered. He cut across the box from the left of the pitch and no one dared risk a tackle, not even a block at the strike. When confidence is down, no one is willing to take the plung and risk being ridiculed. There was no evidence there of any player willing to put his body on the line there for the team. It's p*ssing me clean off. Today we might have gotten away with the three points, but individual performances and overall performance of the side are just as important in the long run. If that doesn't improve, then expect more draws and defeats.

Drop Dirk Kuyt and play N'gog and Torres up front. They are both scoring.

I am just happy we won mate, maybe we didn't play great but we got three points which is more than enough for me at the moment.

Think he is getting very close now - he looked a lot sharper tonight than he had done in any of his times previously - gerrard next to masher with aquaman in front of them behind torres and aquaman and gerrard swapping throughout the game

Well, he got clattered for the first time tonight and that knocked the last of the rust clean off him.  Give him a start Rafa and see how he goes.

Yeah that should give both him and rafa a bit more confidence

Playing with fire in that 2nd half I thought. If their lad hadn't missed the open goal for 1-1 I think we might have all been sat here pulling our hair out again this evening. We got very defensive and nervous from the moment he put on Lucas for Aurelio, on paper it might make us stronger defensively but we lost tempo/movement and the ability to keep the ball with that one substitution. Aquilani still doesn't look fit but it's only gonna happen if the Manager trusts him to do the job from the start of a game. Pompey away on Saturday and i wonder if Rafa will deem that another too tough fixture for the lad? unless we get ourselves 2/3 goals up that is.

Rafa will NEVER play Torres and Ngog up-front together, not a chance. It's just not his way to play to out and out frontmen.

Aquilani looks lightweight to me, good passer but I am not sure he can hold a midfield role. Maybe swop him and Gerrard at least in the short term?

I thought Ngog had a great little game tonight, BTW.  The goal was well taken and he looked dangerous throughout.  I particularly liked his lay-off for Kuyt for what should have been our 2nd (or 3rd)?  Starting to look a little like a player, this lad.

Yes, he was mate.  Johnson must have picked up a knock on Sunday.  I wonder if Degen did too or if Rafa just doesn't trust him.

It's a good shout mate, the lad needs to get 90 minutes under his belt + you're right, he looks like he's gonna take some adjusting to the pace and physicality of things. When he got clattered he got a good shout off the Kop but he didn't seem to think the challenge was coming, when unfortunately the challenge is always coming in England!
