Barry is completely unnecessary imo.

I'd have taken him as a direct replacement for Alonso last summer because I honestly thought Alonso had gone stale here, didn't look happy and hadn't played his best football in about 2 seasons.

With hindsight though, Alonso has proven me and a lot of people wrong, he's been our best player behind Gerrard and Torres, and perhaps even more influential than Torres this season given that Torres has missed so many games.

At the moment Barry wouldn't get in our strongest team - not ahead of Alonso or Mascherano in the middle, not ahead of Riera on the left and not ahead of Aurelio at LB.  Therefore we shouldn't buy him.  Use the money on other positions where we do need strengthening - ie up front and on the right.

Spot on.  :nod

Barry is more of a grafter workhorse as opposed to being a creative skillful player that we need , Barry is not needed when he would be 4th choice for us

I think Barry is more than a workhorse and is a good footballer. The problem is the competition he's have in Liverpool to play would be fierce, and he's an international player.

After the Keane and Crouch experiences I've learned that it's difficult to have a player from Ireland or UK happy if he's not playing regularly. That is, with the amount of games we play and the injuries I'd be chuffed to play him and not Plessis or Aurelio out of position, but would an international quality player like himself accept to be behind Alonso and Mascherano in the pecking order?

I'm watching the game now and I'm enjoying a lot, I'm in the half time rest. In the first half I almost felt sorry for Villa, Oneill's men could not come here to park  a bus, and they were punnished with no mercy. It's hard to be 3-0 at half time (could have been easily 4 if Arbeloa wasn't so naive).

At some stages of this great season we've played so-so and got the 3 points. In others we played better and we got draws. A couple of times only we were awful. But now we're playing well AND we're being effective, and it seems to me a good moment for the machine to be at 100% power.

I only fear God and injuries right now.  :buttrock

Was Barry even playing today?

That just shows how much he would be needed. He wouldn't get a game, so why buy?
At the moment our strongest 11 is...strong. It's the squad we need to build on, we need cover, as always on the flanks and a striker...

but today's game... i was very nervous, actually more nervous than i was the last 2 games. But we showed that we have lost the fear, and have just gone for it from the get go. If we continue to have that attitude I really can't see us dropping too many points. If only we'd started it earlier eh?

But a great great result, espcially with my dislike of MON...brilliant

How great was the Anfield crowd today, BTW?  From the minute of silence (fair play to the Villa traveling support for their respect) on, they were absolutely superb.  The lads seemed to feed off the crowd and got stuck in straight away.  It's been a while since we've seen that kind of vocal support for a league game.

Anyone noticed the ex-Reds up against Man U in the Title run-in?

After Danny Murphy scoring the pen yesterday it got me thinking:

Man U play:

A Villa - Heskey
Sunderland - Cisse
Portsmouth - Crouch
Spurs - Keane
Man City - Bellamy
Wigan - Kirkland (Could have a stormer)
Hull - Barmby :D

Maybe some of our ex-players can do the bizz for us???

If Im being critical Bob, it could have been louder for longer.

But from the off, everyone was up for it and the players sensed the mood and went that extra yard.

When did the atmosphere start to drop off, mate?  It seemed like once the third goal went in it was all fairly academic from that point on.  Could hardly fault people for taking the 2nd half less seriously...even the players were going through the motions by then. :D  I did appreciate the applause for Friedel after the sending off, though.  Heskey seemed to get a nice round too after his substitution.

on the Barry situation, I see him as a clear improvement on Lucas, but then there are a couple of issues that have to be dealt with. Firstly, as Sabre points out, would he be willing to accept such a role? I think that this legit challenge and possible title increase our chances of bringing ppl in to just be squad players on a premier league winning team. It would be a much bigger risk if we were simply JUST a Champions league team that didn't put up much of a fight in the title race.  Still, he might think that it wouldn't be enough time on the pitch.  If we can gauge through his agent or otherwise that he would be up for it, then the other main issues comes up PRICE. We have a few other priorities so to invest a big chunk in a high quality utility player would be a mistake. But I think you can also take into account that we would likely sell Lucas in the event of buying Barry. So that means that the actual price of Barry would be the difference between his price and Lucas' selling price. If we could pull it off for 4-5 million, I think it would be worth it to strengthen the squad.

Might be able to get away with selling Dossena as well if we got Barry.

The minute of silence got my skin like the one of chickens. Amazing.

After the first goal, there was a short interval in the game of bout 13 mins in which I could hear in the tv the song of atmosphere from Villa fans and a couple of songs of them, which were answered well from our fans. For me today the crowd was great, and if the away fans were heard is because they sang louder than other crowds.

Yep, no question about it Joe--a below par Torres still offers an immense amount of quality to the team.  The best part is that he can come to life at any moment and change a game.  He must give defenders absolute nightmares because they can't lose focus on him for a minute.  He could stink up the joint (by his high standards) for 90 minutes and still pop up with a hat-trick in injury time.

Someone posted on an earlier thread that he's now scored 33 goals in his first 50 Liverpool games. A rather stunning return I reckon. Plus, of course, the space that he makes for others to attack.

What a staggering number that is, mate.  Truly astonishing talent. The best part is that he still has his best years ahead of him.

Totally agree, he is the best striker in the world at the moment imo.
As good as we are now can you guys imagine us with a proper right winger. We would be devastating in attack. I'm wondering if Barry could play right wing he's certainly a versatile player although I would love to see a real falir right winger brought in in the summer.

What some people fail to recognise is the pure quality of the guy occupied both their CB's tonight, which allowed us to go on and score 5 goals. OK he didn't score, but without his quality, a spare CB can fill the gaps and prevent us from playing like we did.

You'll have to forgive my vagueness here, but didn't I read an article about a clampdown on the number of foreign players in a team being bandied around, or was that minimum number required in a starting 11...something like that anyhow. He offers us a nationality option that we currently don't have.

Well, I did say being critical Bob mate.

I guess it was in the 2nd half, which is understandable.
However the goal difference thing seems to be a big factor, so we had to push for more.

It was at the start when it was great, and it did the business for us.
