Yep, no question about it Joe--a below par Torres still offers an immense amount of quality to the team.  The best part is that he can come to life at any moment and change a game.  He must give defenders absolute nightmares because they can't lose focus on him for a minute.  He could stink up the joint (by his high standards) for 90 minutes and still pop up with a hat-trick in injury time.

Someone posted on an earlier thread that he's now scored 33 goals in his first 50 Liverpool games. A rather stunning return I reckon. Plus, of course, the space that he makes for others to attack.

What a staggering number that is, mate.  Truly astonishing talent. The best part is that he still has his best years ahead of him.

I though he was contender for Man of the Match.

?? Even though he had two chances to score or at least frigging shoot at goal and panicked both times? He was good in defence though and that of course is his job.

:D  Yeah, the 'deer in the headlights' moment was hilarious.  Probably couldn't believe it when Friedel put it on a platter for him and then sh!te himself trying to decide what to do with it.

Totally agree, he is the best striker in the world at the moment imo.
As good as we are now can you guys imagine us with a proper right winger. We would be devastating in attack. I'm wondering if Barry could play right wing he's certainly a versatile player although I would love to see a real falir right winger brought in in the summer.

Where would he fit in? I doubt Rafa will want to sell Alonso. If we offloaded Lucas then maybe but otherwise not sure. Plus it depends on how much he costs. Yes it is a bonus that he is English but I would much rather Rafa go out and get someone like David Silva.

Im hoping Rafa gives up the ghost on that actually Bav.

Same if we splash out on a top striker.

We've got to get players who strenghten the 4-2-3-1 formation as it's our best.

For me, a top right back and player for Kuyt's position. Arshavin would have been perfect for that, missed out there.

Need a decent striker too.

Barry is very necessary in my opinion. We have only one creative midfielder (Alonso).

Bad Bob wrote:A second phenomenal weekend of football in a row and we're back in this thing!  So proud of the lads today.  They came out of the traps focused and relentless got the vital first goal (nice one Dirk!), held off the Villa pressure well and put the game to bed when the opportunity came.  Professional, professional display to get us right back to breathing down the Mancs' necks.  Only downer is this two week lay off...it always seems to happen to us that these things crop up when we're flying.  Hope we don't go off the boil.

Some honourable mentions today on a day when another consummate team performance brought the points home.  Riera was a much improved performer this week.  I don't know who said what after last week's performance but he was playing like a lad with something to prove.  He asked all the right questions of the Villa defenders, tracked back well, took a superb goal with aplomb when Villa were looking to find their feet and won as the penalty that put the game beyond reach.  Well done son! :nod

I thought Reina was also immense today.  He too had a bit of a dodgy one at Old Trafford last week but he was back in full command this week.  The brace of saves he made against Carew with the score at 1-0 were absolutely vital.  Had we conceded the game would have taken on a much different complexion, as Carew was proving a real handful for Skrtel and Carra.  He then goes and sets up the all-important second goal with another fantastic piece of distribution.

I thought Kuyt had a good game all-around.  His goal was very well taken indeed and his approach play, while not always silky, was progressive and incisive.  He did very well to earn the free kick for our fourth and he generally looked the part in a fluid attacking unit--shades of the Newcastle game in that regard.  He did have his usual quota of heavy touches and back passes but, by and large, he's showing why he deserves a place in the side.

I thought Masch absolutely bossed the midfield today and it's fantastic to see him back to his best.  Torres had a poor game by his high standards but even when that happens, his pace and movement scare the bejesus out of defenders and he makes things happen.  Riera got a lot of freedom to operate today because of Torres and, of course, he did ever so well to win the 2nd penalty.

All in all, we looked like a team that's found another couple of gears in the last few weeks and we're starting to see fantastic performances all over the pitch.  Gerrard and Torres continue to be the nucleus of our great play but the supporting players are now starting to do their bit: from Benayoun a few weeks back, to Aurelio and Dossena last week and Riera and Kuyt today.  Let's hope this purple patch continues! :blues:

I dont think there is anything else that i can say - that post just says it all - great post bob

P.S. Having a fight with a manc who says torres dived for the pen and rooney shouldnt of been sent off

Barry is completely unnecessary imo.

I'd have taken him as a direct replacement for Alonso last summer because I honestly thought Alonso had gone stale here, didn't look happy and hadn't played his best football in about 2 seasons.

With hindsight though, Alonso has proven me and a lot of people wrong, he's been our best player behind Gerrard and Torres, and perhaps even more influential than Torres this season given that Torres has missed so many games.

At the moment Barry wouldn't get in our strongest team - not ahead of Alonso or Mascherano in the middle, not ahead of Riera on the left and not ahead of Aurelio at LB.  Therefore we shouldn't buy him.  Use the money on other positions where we do need strengthening - ie up front and on the right.

Barry is more of a grafter workhorse as opposed to being a creative skillful player that we need , Barry is not needed when he would be 4th choice for us

Even at 10M I think considering he is 30 the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Barry is definately surplus to requirements. With rumours of a £30 mill or so budget we nd to be wise. second striker and right winger.

PS if newcastle go down we could snatch 'bo martins or owen on the sly and use the bulk of the budget on a winger

Fantastic result, yet again!!

(Unfortunately didn't get to see the match.....will have to watch the highlights tonight).

But the lads have produced some brilliant football as they did against man utd and real madrid of late.

There's a new energy and vibrancy to the team....they're all pulling together as one and their game is flowing great.

They resemble the great Liverpool teams of the 70's....

And I find myself daring to dream of the title...... :)
