Yep, no question about it Joe--a below par Torres still offers an immense amount of quality to the team. The best part is that he can come to life at any moment and change a game. He must give defenders absolute nightmares because they can't lose focus on him for a minute. He could stink up the joint (by his high standards) for 90 minutes and still pop up with a hat-trick in injury time.
Someone posted on an earlier thread that he's now scored 33 goals in his first 50 Liverpool games. A rather stunning return I reckon. Plus, of course, the space that he makes for others to attack.
