Some honourable mentions today on a day when another consummate team performance brought the points home.  Riera was a much improved performer this week.  I don't know who said what after last week's performance but he was playing like a lad with something to prove.  He asked all the right questions of the Villa defenders, tracked back well, took a superb goal with aplomb when Villa were looking to find their feet and won as the penalty that put the game beyond reach.  Well done son! :nod

I thought Reina was also immense today.  He too had a bit of a dodgy one at Old Trafford last week but he was back in full command this week.  The brace of saves he made against Carew with the score at 1-0 were absolutely vital.  Had we conceded the game would have taken on a much different complexion, as Carew was proving a real handful for Skrtel and Carra.  He then goes and sets up the all-important second goal with another fantastic piece of distribution.

I thought Kuyt had a good game all-around.  His goal was very well taken indeed and his approach play, while not always silky, was progressive and incisive.  He did very well to earn the free kick for our fourth and he generally looked the part in a fluid attacking unit--shades of the Newcastle game in that regard.  He did have his usual quota of heavy touches and back passes but, by and large, he's showing why he deserves a place in the side.

I thought Masch absolutely bossed the midfield today and it's fantastic to see him back to his best.  Torres had a poor game by his high standards but even when that happens, his pace and movement scare the bejesus out of defenders and he makes things happen.  Riera got a lot of freedom to operate today because of Torres and, of course, he did ever so well to win the 2nd penalty.

All in all, we looked like a team that's found another couple of gears in the last few weeks and we're starting to see fantastic performances all over the pitch.  Gerrard and Torres continue to be the nucleus of our great play but the supporting players are now starting to do their bit: from Benayoun a few weeks back, to Aurelio and Dossena last week and Riera and Kuyt today.  Let's hope this purple patch continues! :blues:

Great post...

(see we can argue but when its a great post i'll happily admit it)

Great line from the Telegraph this, sums it up perfectly;

'The last time Liverpool hosted a Premier League game, against Sunderland 20 days ago, the Kop was shrouded in regret. Now it is aglow with possibility.'

I though he was contender for Man of the Match.

Thought he was brilliant today - he could have scored two goals if he'd had a go. He attacked down the right the whole match and at the same time kept Ashley Young completely anonymous.

That was most everybody last week for sure, mate--me included.  Hard to find anyone that could string two sentences together after that result.   :upside:

My place is mostly Arsenal and Chelsea fans. Arsenal fans have been quiet all season so far but a lot of the guys who support Chelsea are surprisingly complimentary. They say they would rather see us win it than Utd again.

although you can say torres wasn't on his best he was still able to earn a penalty and about about that control when he flicked on for an Arbeloa run just like he did for Gerrard against everton

Yep, no question about it Joe--a below par Torres still offers an immense amount of quality to the team.  The best part is that he can come to life at any moment and change a game.  He must give defenders absolute nightmares because they can't lose focus on him for a minute.  He could stink up the joint (by his high standards) for 90 minutes and still pop up with a hat-trick in injury time.

that is what makes him the best in the world in my opinion. at the high level, any striker can score on a good day when they get a lot of service, or on occasion pull a rabbit out of a hat. But Nando's bad games are better than most top strikers average games. Equally, Torres at his top level is about as good as you can get.

?? Even though he had two chances to score or at least frigging shoot at goal and panicked both times? He was good in defence though and that of course is his job.

Where would he fit in? I doubt Rafa will want to sell Alonso. If we offloaded Lucas then maybe but otherwise not sure. Plus it depends on how much he costs. Yes it is a bonus that he is English but I would much rather Rafa go out and get someone like David Silva.
