MANCHESTER CITY vs LIVERPOOL - 3pm, Sunday 5 October

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby tubby » Sun Oct 05, 2008 9:12 pm

We shouldn't get too carried away from this. We need to keep this going over the next month or so then we can smile but only for a bit. I really hope the team can keep this mentality going right through to xmas.

That's the difference though saint ,we did actually win , come the end of the season and they tally the points up ,we wont  get 2pts or maybe 2 1/2 pts for being 2-0 down and nearly loseing . We will still get 3pts for winning and that is the main difference .
UP THE PURPS !!!

I can understand Rafas thinking in changing formation today.Obviously he was wary of their quality in MF.
Saying that I was still dissapointed before kick off that he never kept to what we had been used to but not surprised that he did'nt,it was long overdue!lol
Credit where its due though he realised it was not working and changed things round and we won the game as a result!
Great desire, belief and mentality from the players today. From our first goal went in it seemed they could sense the game was there for the taking.
Great result and display of character which is very important.Still early days though but I feel this team is stronger than any team under Rafa on the pitch and in their heads!
Cant wait to see it again on MOTD!! :D

We also won at Sunderland where Arsenal only managed a draw. But anyway you could also say many will beat Stoke at home but we couldn't so you cant always look at it like that. We are at home to Wigan next week so hopefully we can bag another 3.

Well, you could also argue that a very poor referee decision prevented us from beating Stoke at home.

I loved the build up for the first goal.  You can tell that the quality of our team has really improved, last season we would have just hoofed it to Torres and Keane.

i hope we dont miss him to much when we play chelsea in a couple of weeks time.
if i remember correctly on one of his first games for the club he put in a man of the match display against them.

Hopefully Agger can score against them again though :D

I just hope Agger takes his chance with both hands or we may have to rely on Hyypia more than I would like.

There's no better manager in the league for making subs that make a positive impact on the game. Rafa's record at doing this is second to none. Anyone want to argue?

Maybe if he's started with that team in the first place then we wouldn't have found ourselves in that situation.

Funny how once we went back to that side we looked alot better alround...

This is becoming a bit of a theme on here regarding the Stoke result. Had we battered away all game and come up short, only to be denied by a last minute faux pas, I would be going for it myself. As it was, it was so early in the game it would seem to me to be clutching at straws somewhat to blame the result on the refs decision.

It BECAME important because we failed to score for the following 85 minutes, it was that failure though which ultimately cost us and not the refs decision IMHO.

well we pulled a rabbit out of the hat there, class finishing from torres and kuyt took his chance well from 3 yards, happy days but maybe if kuyt wasn't playing we wouldn't have needed his two injusty time winners as the games could have been sewn up by then. I havent read back to see the inevitible comments about how kuyt won us the game despite the fact torres two goals put us in that position, but come on even the biggest kuyr lover must admit he was woeful today (although he wasn't the only one).

skrtl looked nasty, let's hope aggar can lay off the ale but I am sure Sami can step in for the league games

s@int wrote:I think we should look on the bright side, Rafa made ONE CHANGE, this time last year he would have made FIVE.

The changes weren't what caused us to be 2-0 down, no idea why fo dne is focusing so much on that. It all worked out second half, plenty of teams will get taken apart by that Citeh attack.

I must confess I was a bit down at half time, once we pulled one back though I felt we would get at least a draw. Funny how this game was such a good one yet Crooks' team of the week includes only Torres - he did score Liverpool's 1,000th Premiership goal, something I've yet to hear mentioned in the media. Then again Crooks does pick mainly people who scored

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/score_on_bbci/7631245.stm

I guess the positive is we went 2-0 down against a good side and fought back, the negative is that we shouldn't be going 2-0 down like that. Believe it or not that is only our third win in the Premiership away to Citeh (P11 W3 D7 L2 F15 A12)

After seven games this is our joint best Premiership start, six points from our next two and it will be the best outright.

Seven games

96/97 17 points
08/09 17 points
95/96 15 points
02/03 15 points
07/08 15 points
94/95 14 points

Eight games

96/97 20 points
02/03 18 points
94/95 17 points
95/96 16 points
01/02 16 points
07/08 16 points

Nine games

02/03 21 points
96/97 20 points
01/02 19 points
07/08 19 points
94/95 17 points
95/96 17 points

Ten games

02/03 24 points
96/97 23 points
01/02 22 points
94/95 20 points
95/96 20 points
07/08 20 points

Three away wins already, I reckon we have to aim at 11 or 12 which we should pencil in at Stoke, Hull, WBA, Newcastle, Wigan, West Ham, Fulham, Bolton and spudz (on current form) Those nine aren't bad sides, but it has to be less ambitious than trying to win 17 or more at home, or the sides we haven't played yet that I haven't listed - Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Blackburn. We showed we can beat a top half side with ambitions away, if Liverpool fans seriously want to win the Premiership then some will have to readjust their thinking to the highest level and that is 27+ wins. That's three wins in every four, you won't get that not winning away. Even if we won all 19 at home, something we can't do thanks to drawing at home to Stoke, we'd still need eight wins away.
