LIVERPOOL VS ASTON VILLA - Sun 22/3/09 4.p.m.

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Gareth Barry would be a perfect acquisition, we need more creativity in the midfield apart from Alonso and he is more prolific to go forward and score goals than Xabi. I hope Rafa signs him for the next season.

Tell you something - Fulham will be fired up for revenge tomorrow against the Mancs
Danny Murphy will have them fired up too.
With Rafa giving out tactics after we battered the Mancs, Fulham may go gung-ho.
Interestingggggggg...

Im buzzin - got a ticket for me and my daughter (Main Stand)

If Fulham do us a favour, Im expecting an almost European atmosphere for this.

Then we'll batter Villa and it's absolutely GAME ON.

Not if their manager has anything to do with it they wont, cant believe what he said durin the week what a sh!thouse  :no  If he doesnt even want to attempt to beat the mancs then why doesnt he let his team get relegated and give their place to the likes of Hull who atleast have a go.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Not if he is going to cost over 8-9Mil. The Time were doing a roundup of possible targets for Rafa in the summer and they had Barry listed at 12Mil. That's way too much for a 30 year old imo. I would rather Rafa throw in 4 mil more and get someone younger who can give us 4+ years of service.

I'd happily see the same side as against united but with alonso back in for Lucas in this game. Big Sami deserves to keep his spot for me.

Does anyone know if Arbeloa's fit? Carra did well last week but I'd probably prefer him at right  back to Carra.

TORRES TARGETS GOAL RECORD

Birthday boy Fernando Torres will be aiming to shoot down a 103-year-old Liverpool scoring record against Aston Villa.

Torres will play his 50th league game for Liverpool on Sunday and has already scored 33 goals, the best return for any Reds player for 52 years.

And if the Spaniard, who turned 25 on Friday, scores twice against Villa he will be the first Liverpool player since Jack Parkinson in 1906 to hit 35 in his first 50 league games.

More goals from Torres and Steven Gerrard will delight manager Rafael Benitez, who paid a glowing tribute to the pair ahead of the visit of Martin O'Neill's team.

"People talk about them as two strikers these days. How many will they score? Certainly more goals than anyone else we have," Benitez said.

"They are fantastic players, very important for us, so for us to see Torres and Gerrard maybe scoring 20 goals each every season would be a massive boost.

"We need them and we know the team is better when they play together."

Torres and Gerrard scored 54 goals between them last season, but injuries have frequently kept them apart and their combined haul this term is 29, Gerrard on 18 and Torres with 11.

And Torres cannot wait to add more now he is back to fitness with just nine league games still to go.

He said: "People seem to be marking me tighter and getting closer to me than last season, but that is only normal.

"After last season they are more aware of me and how I like to play. They know how me and Steven like to play, passing the ball between us.

"Unfortunately we have not been able to play together as much as we would have liked this season because of injury. But when we do it is up to us to adapt to overcome whatever is put in front of us."

He added: "We have had a lot of league draws this season, too many at home, but in general the opposition's approach to us seems to be different to last season.

"We have been up near the top of the table for a long time so a draw against Liverpool is like a victory for some teams.

"That is why it has sometimes been difficult for us to play well at home. Teams just come to Anfield to defend, we know this and we have to improve at home when teams play like this against us.

"We have drawn six home league games, which is not normal for a team in our position in the league, but that is the nature of the Premier League."

For Benitez, it will be his first game since signing a new contract and Liverpool's return to Anfield in triumph after the remarkable victory at Old Trafford last week against Manchester United.

He said: "I know how much winning at Manchester United means to our fans. You only had to be on the motorway coming home with them last weekend to realise that.

"But we must put that result behind us now and concentrate on winning against Villa.

"We are four points behind Manchester United and they have a game in hand, so only by winning every game we have left can we have a say in the title race."

Benitez has spent the last few days signing and then celebrating his new five-year contract, and has already been actively involved in discussions over extending the contracts of his staff.

But that will be forgotten if Liverpool cannot beat a Villa side who have struggled of late to keep their own impressive season on the rails.

Benitez added: "It is very difficult for them to continue to play at the same high level for a long time.

"The other teams are top sides and very strong. Villa have had a fantastic season and they are in a very good position and they must try to stay in contention until the end.

"But Arsenal are playing better and the situation will become difficult for Villa. But it is still a good season for them."

I have a feeling he will do it. He is due a hatrick isn't he? :D

imagine the pressure on Manure if we can close the gap to just 1 point, they'll still have a game in hand but will definitely start feeling nervous.
