AGGER SET FOR RESERVES COMEBACK
Steve Hunter 09 January 2008
Daniel Agger will make his long-awaited comeback from injury in the reserve match at Blackburn Rovers on Thursday night - and you can watch live on LFC TV or online from 7pm GMT.
The Danish international has been sidelined with a broken metatarsal since the goalless draw against Portsmouth on September 15.

Reds boss Rafael Benitez is delighted to have Agger available again and has likened his return to making a new addition to his squad.

"Agger will play for the reserve team at Blackburn and for us it's like signing a new player," said Benitez. "He is very close to starting a game for the first team.

"The injury he had wasn't a bad one but we had problems also with Xabi Alonso so we needed to be careful and we have missed him. We will be much better in the second part of this season."

On the injury front the boss is hopeful captain Steven Gerrard will be available for Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough after he missed the FA Cup tie at Luton due to a calf injury.

"He could be available for Saturday," added Benitez. "He is improving a lot with the physios so he could be an option for the next game."

Defensive duo Alvaro Arbeloa and Fabio Aurelio are also making good progress from calf and hamstring injuries respectively and Benitez said the pair will be available again for selection very soon.

"Both players are improving and working with the physios," added the boss. "I think Arbeloa is closer and Fabio will maybe need a bit more time. I think they will both be ready for next week and maybe one of them will be available for our next game."

Great news. Suddenly it looks like we'll have good depth at the back again.

Unfortunately the game has been postponed due to heavy rain making the pitch unplayable. Too bad really, as he needs to get some games under his belt. Still nice to see, that he's almost ready again though.

A bit more from Agger himself:

AGGER THRILLED TO BE BACK
Paul Eaton 10 January 2008
Daniel Agger today spoke of his delight at finally closing in on a first team return.
Agger has been out of action since breaking a metatarsal bone against Portsmouth in September but is now back in training after completing the long road to recovery.

However, his chance of getting match fitness under his belt for the reserves tonight has been dashed following the postponement of the game at Blackburn due to a waterlogged pitch.

He said: "I'm almost there, but of course I am going to need some playing time.

"Running around on the training ground is not the same as doing it on the pitch, but I'm almost back to full fitness now.

"I can't describe the feeling really. Especially as I'm here in Liverpool to play football. When you're not able to play, then well, I won't say there's no point in me being here, but it can sometimes feel that way.

"I'm looking very much forward to getting back. It is not fun being on the sidelines, especially not when you're at a club like this.

"There is massive competition for places, and it's all about giving your absolute best every time you play.

"It goes without saying that it's hard to do that when you're out, and being out for four months over such a small bone in my foot has been very frustrating."

Daniel Agger has suffered a recurrence of the metatarsal injury which has kept him out since September.
Specialists have yet to confirm how long the Dane will now be out of action, but Rafa Benitez doesn't expect Agger to feature this month.

The news comes just days after the centre-back was due to make a comeback in a reserve game at Blackburn, only for the match to be cancelled due to the weather.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We've had some bad news in that Agger has the same problem again. He was training and ready to play but yesterday in training he felt something, so we need to go back and start from the beginning.

"It's not easy to say when he will be back. He is going to see different surgeons and then we will be able to analyse the situation."

Asked if the defender was likely to feature in the next few weeks, Benitez added: "No, I don't think so."

Aside from Agger, Benitez has a clean bill of health for the FA Cup third round replay with Luton on Tuesday night.

The Spaniard added: "Fabio Aurelio is fit again and the other players are available."
