Kuyt is one of my favourite Liverpool players simply because for me he gets Liverpool and all it stands for and conducts himself accordingly, on and off the pitch and alongside Reina, Carra, Gerrard and Torres is the nearest thing you will find to an old style pre premiership Liverpool footballer.

As support players yes, but to strive for a team with "hard work" as the main priority will get you nowhere.

I sort of agree with you. I don't think you'll win trophies with a bunch of Kuyts in your team but I think it's vital to have one or two in the mix. Without some proper graft, silky skill will get smothered. So, keep Kuyt and get some more skilled players around him...that's the ticket.

Completely agree with you Bob.

Can't win major trophies with a team full of Kuyts, but you need one or two in a team. And in terms of that type of player Kuyt is one of the very best. A grafter who scores important goals. Definitely a place for him in my starting XI.

My only criticism is that at times he looks absolutely knackered (probably because he plays almost every minute of every game) and Benitez still does not rest him. But that's not Kuyt's fault.

Finally, a chain of posts I can agree with. It's about time the Kuyt-bashers were stood up to in numbers, Kuyt may not be our very best player, our best striker, but he is one of our best and more consistent performers. For someone playing half and half, on the wing and more centrally, he is doing f in well to be on NINE Premiership goals. He's reached 50 in a Liverpool shirt, he works his socks off for the team as well as scoring crucial goals and plenty others, and frankly the likes of Skrtel, Mascherano and others have been idolised in the past 24 months for doing FA by comparison.

Interesting assists stats on s*y teletext Premier League clubs/menu stats pages, they list the top five assists/chance creators. Liverpool's list has Dirk in the top five, second most chances created although not a huge number of assists. Aaron Lennon has eight assists, but only three goals so this notion a "top winger" would bring more to the team is very much theoretical because Kuyt's two assists and nine goals cancel out Lennon's eight assists and three goals, and he contributes more in work, is always fits, plus it isn't his fault if there's never anyone in the box to get on the end of chances he creates whereas Lennon has had Keane, Kranjcar, Defore, Crotch, Payluchenko and now Gudjohnsen to aim at - and he can't cross to himself!

A team of Kuyts won't win anything, but a team of Lennons, Torres', Reinas, Mascheranos, Lucas', Carras, Aggers etc won't either......................

Well, imo you need more skill than grit to win...
Right now we have almost only grit and that will never work when you need to open up the opposition which we never can.
And for me workhorses are not composed of your attacking players!

And just like with Alonso stats do lie!
Alonso had few assist and scored rarely but everyone could see during games his skill and his vision and what it meant for the team.

And it is exactly the same with Kuyt, but in the opposite way!
Everyone and his dog who watch games sees with their own eyes there is more to a game than just scoring goal.

If noone create chances noone will score and Kuyt practically never create ever. His skill level is so low than he can never open up a defense and you must have offensivly gifted players in you attacking positions since it is their responsibility to create and not just poke home balls in the 6 yard box every 5th games or else not much else.

I think Kuyt is a machine sent from the future to help us win the premiership. He is supposed to be the ultimate footballer but the skill chip got fried in the time vortex.

isn't he a striker? then why does Rafa place him as a winger??

Playing players out of there positions is stupid as stupid gets...You bought them because they were good as strikers/wingers/CB whatever and then you go ahead and misplace them? strange manager indeed.

Yes but in fairness Kuyt was bloody useless as a striker. At RM he did a decent job last season , this season he seems to be a bit more of a striker again.

To be fair was poor as a LONE striker which is the only way Rafa has really tried him due to the sytem he plays. I'm sure allowed to partner someone like Torres long term he would get a good amount of goals as he did before he joined us, I also believe this is one of the reasons Ngog appears to be struggling. Playing 2 up front would allow the support striker to get more space due to defenders concentrating on Torres whilst also stopping Torres being kicked all day by big centre halfs and hopefully reducing some of his injuries.

Just wonderful how easy it is to forget when it suits them.

The first half of 07/08 Kuyt played almost every minute and as a striker and got chance after chance and scored 1 in open play of his knee. Then finally even Rafa can't keep up the charade and puts him our right and he did better.

And now when he was abysmal in the first half of this season as a rw and has some decent performances as a striker lately, he should always been played a striker...

How about being on the bench so we have someone who can offer pace, penetration, creativity and skill, something I want to see in attacking players and which Kuyt has none of.

And it becomes even worse when our central midfield pairing offer none of it either...
