Bad Bob Posted on Oct. 02 2008,19:52Classic newkit debate, this. It's gone from discussing the player, per se, and is firmly stuck in the rut of how "the other side" sees the player. One side spends all their time criticizing those who put Kuyt "on a pedestal" (when no one actually has) while the other side spends all their time moaning about those who participate in the Kuyt "witch hunt" (when that's not really happening either). Oh, and, of course, both sides are absolutely certain that their views on the lad are completely balanced and reasonable, while their opponents' views are completely and utterly OTT. Peel back all the heated rhetoric and the two sides probably agree on virtually everything being discussed. Priceless.

Its only when the insults come out, then the retaliation, then the flamethrowers! Its amazing the difference a week makes and a logical approach to the subject takes hold. Looking back I think half the posts are about getting in the last word or a clever comeback, rather than a valid point that hasnt been retread about 20 times.
To be fair I can understand why certain posters dont rate him, he does have a dodgy first touch and can be guilty of losing the ball. but on the other hand he chips in with vital goals and frees some of our more creative players to do their thing. In my opinion he should be used as a rotational striker and most definately NOT a right midfielder but without adaquate cover in that position atm hes doing a better job than probably should be expected of him. But if the cash is there (you never know, maybe Tom Hicks will win the EuroMillions) I think we need to be strengthening that area come January, though I dont have an inkling who we should go for (Ashley Young is a good player who could get even better plus he does have the plus of being dynamite whipping in crosses and setpieces) but thats a debate for another thread

Bad Bob I agree...he's solid but we could do better at RM. I think most people agree with that, more or less. But does Rafa? I know I've asked it before but I still think the more interesting discussion is why Rafa plays him there. Is it simply because he doesn't feel there's anyone better? Or, does he think Kuyt's strengths outweigh his weaknesses at RM?
Let me put it another way. If Hicks and Gillett handed Rafa a wad of cash ahead of January and told him to use it on one player, do you think he'd go out and get a RM or do you think he'd use it elsewhere and persist with Kuyt as our week-in, week-out RM?
