you have a point peewee... finally it's not just rafa and kuyt anymore  :D ... so who should take the corners? Alonso and Gerrard both haven't been impressive...

Bad Bob wrote:Absolutely frustrating to watch today.  We put out near enough our strongest team, completely bossed the game and couldn't score for toffee (besides the perfectly good goal that got chalked off).  There's no way this was a team selection or tactics problem today...this was a finishing problem pure and simple.  Our best players all forgot their shooting boots today and we came away empted handed.  No doubt the usual whipping boys will get another flogging tonight but Dirk Kuyt was not the reason we lost today.  Nor Babel or Yossi (despite doing little of any note when they came on).  Dossena was poor and Arbeloa was merely decent, IMO, but it wasn't them either.  For me the difference was the fact that Torres is still very rusty (he had at least 3 chances he usually buries today and couldn't get it done), Keane is still overwhelmed (two golden chances spurned by him as well) and neither Gerrard nor Alonso really had their long-range shooting boots on, besides the two obvious good efforts.

It was bitterly disappointing to watch and we really could have used all 3 points in a weekend where one or even two of our main rivals will drop points but it wasn't to be.  I'm not yet prepared to write off our season nor to say we'll never solve this problem.  I'm hopeful that we can expect much more out of our top players and that they will deliver as the season goes on...because they sure didn't today.

that's precisely what I think bob... maybe in these kinda games, we need a cool and creative head, a player like gary mc, we need an alternative to gerrard in the set pieces as well as we need a better corner taker... alonso and gerrard not doing well with corners...

Yep. Exactly. I call someone a cunt, because lets face it, what he wrote was in the most blatantly cuntish way and fashion and deserved it. I'll take a booking for that gladly, but the fucker deserved a red for what he wrote alone.

Look at it this way - if we'd drawn against Man U and won today - no one would have been
panicking.

It was a frustrating game - but you get these kind of results most seasons.

I remember when we were winning the league for fun in the 80's - we'd still get
the odd 0-0 against lesser opposition.

I think yesterday's result just highlighted people's insecurities about our title chances.

Do you even know how many points we have so far this season?  And how many points for us to drop for that even to happen?  Do you even know how far behind we were last year?  Feck, do you watch football at all?

a horrible, horrible, horrible match to watch. at half time i was mildly concerned, with half an hour to go quite worried and with 5 mins to go suffering more than i've suffered watching football for a long time. stoke were absolutely terrible. they offered nothing apart from a few hopeful punts and literally parked the bus in their penalty area. every time we attacked, which was pretty much every 2 or 3 minutes, there were at least 8 yellow shirts between the D and the goal.

i agree with saints analysis that we need that 'canny' player who can play the killer ball through a defence, but on occasions like this where exactly is he going to play it to? when there is not a square in of space inside the opponents box a player like that isn't going to be much help. this is where some genuine width on both sides would be more effective to pull the massed ranks apart a bit. we have riera on the left now, which is nice, but in some ways it led to us being even more predictable yesterday. i lost count of the number of times that the approach play was identical. the ball would come from defence to an area just advanced of the centre circle, no opposition players would press and the ball is sent out wide left in the general vicinity of riera. same speed, same angle, pretty much every time. riera and dossena would then get closed down and a hopeful ball would be sent into a packed box. they knew that no penetration was going to come from the right via kuyt so they could play the percentages and defend their right hand side once they'd worked out that was where 90% of our attack was going to come from.

its tragic to miss out on 3 points and the psychological boost of (possibly) going clear top. we'll win the derby though and we'll all be having a big group hug on the forum again... apart from the bit where people will be slagging of kuyt for running around too much.

If only the mutherf@ckin ref and linesman had not disallowed the gerrard goal.....It would have been another 8-0 thrashing...    Not that this should be the excuse..... for the draw.

Anyway hope rafa sees that when a team parks the bus...we need players on the wings to stretch the defence apart....We have one on the left (Reira)...we have another one who isn't even among the subs (pennant)....When are you gonna see the light beneitz...?  :Oo:

When i watched the match yesterday, it just showed me that the players didn't have a sense of urgency as they thought they would win easily but the fact was Stoke put 9 man at the back and the speed of Torre, Keane and Babel couldn't put to use. Anyway, just thought again we lack creativity and again we lost point to team like stoke and is repeating the trend for the last couple of years. Just think that Torres didn't seems like comfortable playing 4-4-2 and hope we do something about it and someone mention selling Keane would be a good idea comes Jan.....We are now stuck with a 20 million pounds Kuyt the second while the first is still with us..... We surely need someone with creativity like Luis Garcia and not more clone for Kuyt. I understand they both works hard but we are not stoke or Hull. I don't know why but Rafa really likes soldiers type player rather than player with flair. Actually, we should be able to find someone with both flair and hard working as these two attribute are not mutually exclusive. Another thing was why not put Pennant in for Benayourn as he was so so again last night. Anyway, I'm still fume upset about the game and just need to air it out....

The reason why we can't break teams like Stoke down is simple....... we have no-one with game intelligence. Gerrard is probably one of the finest players to ever wear the red shirt, but the one thing he lacks is game intelligence, its also the reason I said Keane isn't a creative second striker. Alonso is one of the best passers of a ball in the world , but again he suffers from lack of that same vital ingredient. Its the reason the mancs paid £32million for Berbatov and will no doubt pay the same for Tevez.

Your first sentence is too harsh on our players IMO. Keane and Torres had in their boots chances that not only they wouldn't miss normally but actually many (not only Berbatov) other strikers of the league would have scored, glorious chances. Our strikers today didn't score, a bad day in the office, but nothing more.

You are missunderstanding me as usual Sabre. I am not talking about players scoring (although that always helps) I am talking about our players not having the game intelligence to create chances rather than hoping for a 20 yarder from Gerrard, a bit of individual brilliance from Torres or a knee from Kuyt. Most of our chances today came from hit and hope crosses or they were from outside the box.

No, I don't misunderstand you usually  and neither have I this time

I think it's harsh to say of our squad that "we have no-one with game intelligence". Actually it's something I disagree with totally. Yesterday we did create those chances, we just didn't score them. Yes, just like we criticize Kuyt and Alonso we also must be able to tell when Torres and Keane haven't their game. Because you know, like any other player in the world, there are games in which they don't have their day. YOu know that right?  ???

I usually disagree The Rock but if that early goal would have been allowed, we'd be talking about a spanking, the difference being Stoke trying to get a goal to draw and not being so deep.

As for Andy's point on predictability. This games are won by the wings, doing the same predictable stuff fast to get your chances and materialise them. It's probably a safer route than trying to spot the perfect pass or the perfect play from the middle. Riera had a good first half but not his best second half. My point with disagreement  with several posters here is in that yesterday we didn't have a problem to build up, but to materialize the chances. Yes Kuyt, Riera, and Alonso had a number of mistakes, like any other player, but the main problem yesterday was upfront

Also, it's  a fair criticism Peewee's. I think his numbers on corners must be more or less right and that's something unacceptable. How many of our players took a corner yesterday in the other hand? 5? 6? I didn't like that.
