I wanted Rafa to stay, but I think the new manager needs all the support. He is a man brought by the yanks, but that's not his fault, I'll support him because the team needs so. It serves no purpose to moan now about Rafa, the time to support him was before, not now.

I think that if we keep our best players we'll be closer to two years ago than yesteryear.

From a footballing perspective - YES. His tenure petered out it's as simple as that.

it probably was but 90% of those who wanted him did so for reasons outside of football, because of the politics at the club. People acknowledged he was fighting them from inside the club and appreciated the restraints he had to work with. If he had to go we should have sorted the ownership situation first then Rafa. But too many rubbished this too readily and quite frankly we're only going in one direction right now

His first task will be trying to convince our key players that they shouldn't leave. Hopefully it shouldn't be more than a year before we are sold so he if can get them to hold of for just another season then maybe it will be enough to keep this squad from completely falling apart. Without Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano it will be 7th all over again.

Something tells me that Gerrard and Torres will have made their minds up before they headed out to South Africa. It is crystal clear that Mascherano will be going this summer. It's certainly going to be interesting that's for sure and despite the situation we find ourselves in and the fact that I have found this World Cup dull and dreary I cannot wait for next season to begin.

I just hope we find ourselves a manager before the season kicks off.

Did Rafa persuade Alonso to stay, did he persuade Crouch, Garcia, Momo et al (good signings he purchased)to stay?. NO and that was without the scaremongering of the owners pushing these sales through.

If we accepted a bid for Torres then he might go purely on the basis that we've accepted it, he may not feel valued anymore. Rafa could simply reject the offer and withdraw the opportunity for Torres to talk to another club.

I'm amazed that anyone thinks that the timing of Rafa's sacking, Yozzi's departure etc etc has all been by chance. Even people still thinking that the Yanks have any real imput into the clubs direction.
The WC has given a break between Rafa's reign and our future. The yanks won't be there much longer and I cannot believe that the next manager has not been picked already, whoever he is.

There must have been lessons learnt from this whole fiasco and I feel optimistic about next season. We will end up a leaner, more realistic outfit and with the right manager we've got more than an even chance of chasing the title.

The distraction of G&H's presence is clouding too many judgements.

Just keep the faith. There was life before Rafa and there will be life after. He was just another chapter in our history. The next one starts soon.

To be honest John, only club employees can state to what extent the ownership face affected the decisions made within the club on a daily basis, how it affected our strategy for the season and whether it impacted the team and manager psychologically and performance wise.

That said we know from our own business experiences that its no fun at all working for a company that is going through a rough patch, further exacerbated by being plastered all over the papers on a daily basis.

The truth is Benitez could not have left the club in mid-season or before Broughton was appointed because there was no clear direction or leadership in the club to make that decision. Why do people think Purslow has said nothing about Benitez leaving? Anyone remember Purslow coming out on FiveLive the day Liverpool were to play and beat Man Utd at Anfield last autumn to say that "even if Liverpool don't win the title this season Rafa is staying till the end of his contract".

The club got Broughton in to perform the hatchet job on Benitez that the Americans knew they tried to perform at the end of 2007 and that Purslow had no authority to perform.

As for the new manager I doubt they have anyone lined up. My guess is now that if Hodgson says no or the compensation is too much Sammy Lee or even someone like Phil Thompson will be appointed permanent caretake until the club is sold.

I would really worry in terms of personnel for next season. Benayoun will be gone I can see Torres, Gerrard, Riera, Babel, Mascherano, Kuyt, Cavalieri all having left plus one or two others.

If it is to be return to the bootroom then all the better because it's very difficult times ahead on the pitch worse even than under Souness.

Kenny Dalglish is surely the only viable option ,and the fact he has the owners ignoring his inclusion only goes to show he would provide an audible voice for the fans once again  (THEY ARE RUNNING SCARED OF THIS APPOINTMENT ) and that for me provides enough proof he is the man who should take the helm anything else an the uproar felt at the owners sounding out of Klinsman would have been less than futile
