FIVE MANAGERS WHO COULD REPLACE BENITEZ AT LIVERPOOL
Betfair, 4 Nov 2009

While there is plenty of talk about Benitez being on the brink, is there anyone currently unemployed who could come in and do a better job? We looked at five of the leading candidates...

Kenny Dalglish
Notable former clubs: Liverpool, Blackburn, Newcastle, Celtic
Major honours: First Division/Premier League (1985-86, 1987-88, 1989-90, 1994-95), FA Cup (1986, 1989)
What's he done? King Kenny is one of Liverpool's all-time greatest heroes, having guided the club to six titles as a player and three as a manager - including their most recent in 1990. He also led Blackburn to glory in 1995 before having less successful spells at Newcastle and Celtic. He already works behind the scenes for Liverpool and would be a popular choice, even on a temporary basis.

Roberto Mancini
Notable former clubs: Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter Milan
Major honours: Serie A ("2005-06", 2006-07, 2007-08), Coppa Italia (2001, 2004, 2005, 2006)
What's he done? He's never failed. Having weathered financial storms at Fiorentina and Lazio to guide them to silverware, he ended Inter's 17-year title drought. Despite achieving all that in just over seven years as a coach, the Italian has never really received the credit he deserves because of a failure to lead Inter to glory in Europe - a task Jose Mourinho is finding just as challenging.

Jurgen Klinsmann
Notable former clubs: Germany, Bayern Munich
Major honours: None
What's he done? Having revived Germany after a disastrous Euro 2004 by taking them to third in the World Cup, he took charge of Bayern Munich in 2008 - having previously been approached by Liverpool - but was sacked in April with the side just three points off top. Successor Louis van Gaal has two points fewer than Klinsmann picked up in the first 11 games of last season.

Luciano Spalletti
Notable former clubs: Udinese, Roma
Major honours: Coppa Italia (2007, 2008)
What's he done? Under Spalletti, Udinese qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history in 2005. He left for Roma, who had finished eighth, that summer and led them back into the competition. They reached the quarter-finals in 2007 and 2008, the latter thanks to a memorable double over Real Madrid in the first knockout stage, a feat Benitez replicated last season.

Marco van Basten
Notable former clubs: Holland, Ajax
Major honours: None
What's he done? A controversial four-year spell in charge of Holland in which he marginalised several big-name players ended at Euro 2008, where Holland played some of the best football but fell to Russia in the quarter-finals. He moved on to Ajax but lasted just one season, resigning after they finished third - only the second time in eight years that failed to make the top two.

If had to pick one of them it would be Mancini - but would still pick Hiddink over anyone .

Aside from Kenny, none of those are good enough. And even then he has been out of the game for a long time so id have my doubts.

So these are the managers we are being linked with and yet people here still ask for Rafas head?

before i give my opinions on the next manager i want to make it clear i'm still completely behind the man in charge now, these are just in case the cowboys upstairs decide to pull the plug

Martin o' Neill is my favourite choice, mourinho is a second but i reckon theres more of a chance of wayne rooney winning a modeling contract, i'd have harry redknapp but i doubt he'd leave spurs so quickly. If i thought kenny would take the job longterm he'd obviously get my support but i reckon he would only take it on til the end of the season. Taking all of this onboard, o' neill seems to be the best option.

Bring in Hiddink & you will see results the same season!

He will clean out the rubbish left behind by Rafa and start with a solid foundation. It seems everywhere he goes he causes revolutions in football & I think Liverpool is crying out for a bit of a shake up.

OR

Keep Rafa & blindly follow him into the abyss (you know that dark place where Leeds resides right now!!!)

Perhaps some think they might have little chance of winning the league, but where's the proof Rafa has any more chance of winning it? He's tried five times, not succeeded and on his way to another failure, so far he's proved capable of some good unbeaten runs but nothing consistent enough over 38 games to win the league, while impressing in the Champions League which is more suited to his style - not needing to win 70%+ of games.

I've said before, I don't care who takes us to the league title as long as someone does. Is Rafa looking like he'll win it anytime soon? Nope. So do we settle for scrapping for the also-ran slots, perhaps not even top four, or do we change it and try something different? Change can be feared for being the unknown, just like when Houllier went. But just look what happened when he went, the next manager won the Champions League. Who knows, maybe the next manager will land the league.

If we done a Leeds it wouldnt be down to Rafa, it would be down to them pair of b@stard owners.

Why are people saying MON? I feckin hate that little b@stard and wouldnt want him anywhere near our club.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

theres a lot of talk in the press rooms that if Rafa leave or sacked that a new manager will not come in right away, it seems that Sammy lee with Kenny Dalglish will take over untill the right person is found.

now i dont have a problem with that, but it makes me think that the owners are looking at someone that is in a job right nowand they might have to hold off getting him till the end of the football year.

He has done better in his first 200 games than either Fergie or Wenger did. That is proof enough.

I reckon if rafa left they'd get someone from within the club to take the reigns and from there would get offered the job full-time, then BANG - welcome to Newcastle :D
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road
