Cruyff hails Liverpool man

6th Jul 2010 - Latest News

Dirk Kuyt was today praised by one of the greatest footballers ever to play the game.

Dutch icon Johan Cruyff has been in awe of the Liverpool man's exploits in helping Holland reach their first World Cup semi-final in 32 years.

Kuyt has played across the front line for Bert van Marwijk's men during the finals, making his mark with a group stage goal against Denmark and an assist for Wesley Sneijder's winner during a quarter-final victory over Brazil.

Speaking ahead of tonight's clash with Uruguay, Cruyff said: "Look at what he did. He started on the right, then at forward and against Brazil on the left.

"Not only did he keep Maicon out of the game, he also set up the winner.

"Someone like that is worth his weight in gold."

Hardly a compliment

Given his weight and the current price of gold it puts Kuyts worth at just over £2 million.  :(

Or perhaps it isn't as simple as saying it is the formation that is working, those using that formation are in the last four. It could be the players making it work or the fact that the players and system fit neatly, the fact that three of the last four at top sides makes no never mind I suppose - or Uruguay having a soft route to the semis

Seriously though, if every player in our team worked as hard for the team as Dirk does, we'd be far better off for it. So underrated by many Liverpool fans in general.

Dirk playing on the left wing as well :D I must confess I think he stands out like a sore thumb in anotherwise technically gifted Dutch team, but he does come in handy for negating opposition right backs. Also, he provides a bit of hard work balance for the more artistic players, and he is the opposite of the Dutch tendancy to try and walk it in, Dirk just has a shot pretty much whenever the ball comes to him.

He did get an assist for the Robben goal, but whereas some thought it was a great ball in, I thought it was behind his target and therefore a great header. It all depends upon which way you look at it I suppose.

One thing I would say is that I've always thought he isn't good enough for a team which has pretensions of winning the league. As we don't at the moment realistically and a top six place or better ought to be our target, we may find Dirk to be a very important player for us this season.

Think Cruyff might think differently

The lad has played i think 35 games in a row for a dutch team unbeaten during the whole of the world cup including qualifying and is up there at the top of the list in assists and is a massive vital player for them and yet he still isnt good enough for some . If he goes he will be a very big miss for us and then maybe people will see the worth to the team he brings .

He isn't 'great' going forward but does chip in with assists and goals now and again and he tracks back a lot. In the modern game he is perfect for a wide role.. like that Muller too..

He only just signed a new contract a few years ago so hopefully he wants to stick it out.

Well it's a shame he doesn't agree with me if he doesn't, but there you are. I'd be surprised if he doesn't think Dirks contribution in terms of nullyfying the opposition right back isn't significant, and equally I'd be surprised if he thinks Dirk is amongst the most technically gifted of the Dutch players.

Still, I'm happy to disagree with him
