It's the derby. Who cares how we win it? Typical derby really, scrappy scrappy affair, not very pleasing on the eye. Job done so now it's time to focus on number 6.

The_Rock wrote:Riise has shown that he is our best left back....period. With him on the team, we defend way lot better on the set pieces (although we still look vulnerable in it). I don't care what others say, but riise is a better defender than auerlio. And thats more essential to a left back.

Skertel - Has proved that he is indeed a good purchase. He only had 2 bad games since he came here (his 1st match and against manure). Judge him next season...He will be a colossus like vidic for us.

Lucas - Neat player. But he doesn't look like a world beater i thought he would be (with all the hype about him winning player of the year in brazil)

Torres - No comments needed. 1 chance 1 goal.... Can't imagine what will we do if he is injured...

The ugly -
PHILIP NEVILLE.....................    .........  :p Loved it when he grabbed the windbreaker when he was subbed.....

You really think changing one full-back has that big an impact on our ability to defend set-pieces?

Skrtel is no Vidic, this season or next season. A solid player maybe but don't get too carried away.

I must confess although we took our foot off the gas in the second half, I never ever felt we were in danger unless they got a flukey bounce from a set-piece. Over the ninety minutes we were much the better team and thoroughly deserved the win I thought.

Positives were definately Hyppia and Skyrtel who in particular was excellent after last weeks dodgy performance against Man Utd. I like the way he's prepared to go forward on the odd occasion, in modern football centre halves do that to great effect. Most pleasing was the fact that he didn't get caught in the headlights ballwatching once today. Definately an encouraging display.

Riise was as good as he's been all season at left back, while Gerrard was at his very best and head and shoulders the best player on the pitch. Lucas flitted in and out, while to be totally honest I thought Kuyt had a good game on the right as well. He ought to have scored with the header in the first half but it did take him a bit by surprise, but he was unlucky with the blocked shot and the deflected one which went just wide. Good effort from the fella and he deserves the plaudits. It was mentioned earlier in the week that "if only some of the other players had Kuyt's workrate" and that applied to babel today who was infuriating. He has talent but jeez he keeps it well hidden sometimes and has much to learn.

The only slight disappointment for me was Alonso, but in truth he wasn't that bad. Everton though were absolutely awful, and it seems hard to comprehend that we are as close as we are to them in the table. I would think that'll make fourth just about a certainty now, it's just a shame that we find ourselves fourteen points off the top spot with the distinct possibility that the gap maybe even wider come the end of the season. Were we to perish in the Champions League then the questions visa-vis any progress this season will be entirely legitimate.

Bad Bob wrote:An unbelievably pedestrian Derby after the first frantic 20 minutes.  An important win but a worrying performance.  Perhaps the lads where holding something back for Arsenal.

The key concerns for me were Babel, Lucas and Alonso.  Babel consistently makes poor decisions with the ball in the final third and he really should have scored from the Riise cross.  Lucas looks light weight and off the pace, with some sloppy distribution also marring his day.  Alonso also looked off the pace for a lot of the match...we definitely missed Masch in the middle.  Thankfully, Stevie was game for tracking back, even if it left Torres too isolated up top.

On the upside, the back four all played well and there was only one cross that Reina struggled with in a crowded box.  Skrtel, especially, looked well up for the blood and thunder of derby day.

I thought Carsley was lucky to stay on the pitch after that tackle on Torres.  Thankfully Fernando's okay and what a goal for us today!  Were it not for one Cristiano 'ever-so-slightly-better-than-Jermaine-Pennant' Ronaldo, he'd be getting fitted for the golden boot (metaphorically speaking) right now. :nod

Agree with pretty much all that - I think any team can concede against the run of play, so it would have been nice to have made more chances in the second half.

Skyrtel was superb today.

Kuyts effort was unbelievable as usual. His understanding and link up with Gerrard and Torres has really come on over the last few months. He came off the wing a fair bit today, given he's a striker I'd like to see him have more shots on goal. Babel in comparison just doesn't link up well at all. He slowed down the breaks over and over again while he tried to work out where to pass and often lost possession. I feel a bit sorry for him - a right footed striker on the left wing!

Torres scored and got the official MOTM but it was Stevie all the way for me - I thought he looked a bit fed up when he said we'll hopefully secure 4th in the Sky interview.

Yeah a good result, but some worrying performances bearing in mind the next match is a big one.

babel- he is cr*p at crossing and does not look up.

Kuyt- is rubbish at hitting the target (as per hi first half chance, he should have hit target at least)

Lucas- Poor game today. he was bad.

Stevie mom probably.

We'll see.

next 10 days will tell the whole story of this season!

etc

I thought you'd know by now, Kuyt starts each match with a rating of -50/10 so unless he scores a hat-trick and single-handedly wins us every competition we can enter he's classed as shit.

He did well today, had a few chances and was unlucky when his curler deflected just wide.
