Bragging rights on merseyside - A derby to remember

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

There are games that fade fast in the memory and no sooner have you left the "field of dreams" you have forgotten much of what has passed the previous 90 mins.

Today's Derby was no such occasion and having Just returned from the best derby Game I've personally witnessed since Macca's last gasp vctory at Goodison in 2001 I'm still trying to draw breath.

The game was absorbing form the first kick with Liverpool dispelling fears of a "sit back and wait" attitude that has prevailed on too many occasions this season. The pace and precision of Liverpool's play was breathtaking matched only by Everton's determination to make their mark and they surely did that as 3 Liverpool players were substituted before half time  ???

But thankfully the goals the play deserved came before the enforced changes and Liverpool strolled (or should that be limped ) in at half time 2 goals to the good leaving a  shell shocked Everton to regroup and licjk their wounds.

A wounded Animal often strikes out as a form of defence and Everton are no different but it was Baros and not the thug come professional footballer they call Duncan Disorderley who saw a bal lto be won that wasn't there and saw red.

They call injury prone Duncan the tampon at Anfield on account of him being IN for 1 week then OUT for 3 but left with my own personal choice I'd rather see him out all 4 weeks of the month. The player with an awful lot more reputation that ability likes to throw everything at the player and little at the ball  :Oo:

The fans must get special mention today for the deafening way they urged and "supported" the reds. Rarely do LFC Players fail when the KOP finds it's voice and today was no exception as the crowd voiced it's appreciation of ewhat they were seeing. The atmosphere was to use the adage , electric and the noise when Garcia slotted home after Morientes's audacious lob was simply unmatched this season.

2-1 tells you the barest of deatil when in reality the Reds were dominant from start to the sending off of Baros. Only then did Everton threaten and scored a well worked goal to set up a tense finish.

You often sit at Anfield and wonder what else you could be doing to be honest such is the averageness of some game and you sit there cos you dream and hope for days like today when you  wouldn't want to be anywhere else  :)

We just need to keep playing like that for the rest of the season.  However, with Bolton being the next game at home, and they chasing our tails, we might just have 2 games in a row, where we play to our potential.

:D I'm still euphoric Lyns. Just the stuff of dreams today. NOT because it was Everton but the passion, the pride, the play and performance was what you expect from the Red men :)

By far the best we have played all season IMO and deserveadly winners in the Merseyside Derby. They talk of the Celtic / Rangers and the Manchester Derby (A bit of a Non event most of the time) but you would be hard pressed to witnessan atmosphere like today at Anfield ...

great post ian :)

the atmosphere was something else today. i've been critical of the noise and support in the past but today it was top class. the team also showed a fight and resolve i haven't seen for ages.

you really do have to wonder how everton are 4th because they are a poor side. they spent the entire second half just lumping balls into our penalty area.

... and this from the boss: LFC.tv

Rafael Benitez says he is confident Liverpool will finish in fourth place above Everton at the end of the season after praising his side for a deserved derby victory.
The Liverpool manager felt his side could and should have won by a bigger margin and said he told his team to attack Everton right from the start.

Benitez said: "I would like to see us play like that in every game because we played fantastic. We played at a high tempo with good passing, good pressure and scored two good goals.

"We then lost three players and four if you include Luis Garcia who was injured but wanted to play the second half.

"We had two great chances with Baros who ran clear but I am happy with this win. We played better than Everton and I am confident we will finish fourth.

"It was great to celebrate with the fans at the end of the match because I wanted to say thank you to them. They were fantastic and it's important to show them how much it meant."
