Liverpool Football Club - Games

Postby JamCar05 » Tue Nov 03, 2009 3:17 pm

So something like this perhaps (in reference to the full squad posted by myself a few posts back up):

GK Reina

RB Carra/Darby
CB Carra/Kyrgiakos
CB Agger
LB Insua

RM Kuyt
CM Masch
CM Lucas
LM Benayoun/Babel

CF Benayoun/Voronin
ST Torres

Subs:

Cavalieri
Ayala
Darby/Kyrgiakos
Aquilani
Spearing
Plessis
Babel/Voronin
Ngog

(Don't know if all eight can be on the bench - maybe only seven?)

if you don't want to play Carra or Darby at RB, I guess your only option is:

                            Reina
            Carra        El Greco        Agger
Kuyt           Mascherano    Lucas        Insua
                           Yossi
                  Torres          N'gog/Babel

bench: Cavalieri, Darby, Ayala, Aquilani, Ngog/Babel, Voronin, Spearing/Plessis

bring on Aquilani for Lucas if we are drawing, bring on Aquilani for Mascherano if we are losing.

well I've got that awful feeling again and its only Tuesday :D

I'm really not looking forward to seeing the team sheet
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

-------------reina
darby--carra--agger--insua
kuyt--mash--lucas--benayoun
-------voronin---torres

rafa will probably do something like that - play voronin instead of ngog, stick our most creative player out left in the cold. the next worse thing he could possibly do is put carra at rightback with stelios and agger in the middle. carra hasnt got the pace to be a rightback.

I don't like the look of that at all. I'd much sooner see Darby come in than that (even though I think he's unlikely to make the breakthrough long-term). Primarily because three at the back is generally much riskier than four at the back (it's more than just a single change in player, it's a complete change in system that exposes the CBs to threats from different angles and there's a high risk of getting done in the channels, and so new demands, and that also applies to the wingers who have to be especially aware of activity in behind), but also because because it would maintain Carra and Agger as the central partnership and see Kyrgiakos dropped.

One possible silver lining here that hasn't been mentioned is that Lyon have their own problems at the moment.  They were played off the park a week ago by Nice, losing 4-1 and squeaked by lowly-place St Etienne 1-0 at the weekend.  They've also got massive injury problems and have practically none of their first choice defence available.

Might even things up a bit ...

they are weak at CB, but the situation was the same when we played them at Anfield. Toulalon did a pretty good job at CB, although I would fancy Torres scoring if we can get him an hours worth of time on the pitch at 75% fitness, but even that is in question. If we do get a lead, I would take him off early and try to defend the hell out out of it

Are you suggesting our most creative player is Wash? Given the choice between him and Voronin I would go for some random schoolkid having a kickabout.  :D

What if we start with Voronin and Wash upfront, it could happen

Even with all our injury problems, would Rafa want Babel in the starting 11?

You gotta be pretty far down the pecking order for that. Whats he gonna be worth in the transfer window? 3mill?

Glen Johnson and Fabio Aurelio will both miss Liverpool's vital UEFA Champions League clash with Lyon after failing to travel with the squad to France.

The defensive duo were left behind as Rafa Benitez's injury-hit squad travelled out from Liverpool on Tuesday.

Johnson and Aurelio have failed to shake off calf problems and have been left behind on Merseyside to receive further treatment.

As a result of their injury problems Liverpool have been given permission by Uefa to bring teenage defender Daniel Ayala into their squad from their B list of players registered for the group matches.

The absence of Johnson leaves Benitez with a major headache over who to play at right-back as Philipp Degen is not registered for the Champions League.

It means Jamie Carragher could be switched to right-back or youngster Stephen Darby could be drafted in.

Better news for Benitez is that Alberto Aquilani, Daniel Agger and David Ngog have all made the trip after missing last weekend's defeat by Fulham.
