AGGER CLOSE TO NEW ANFIELD DEAL
Paul Eaton 01 May 2009

Rafael Benitez today confirmed Daniel Agger is close to agreeing a new contract at Anfield.
The Danish defender's future has been the subject of speculation for many months, but a deal is now close which will ensure the 24-year-old commits his future to the Reds.

"It is very close," confirmed Benitez today. "We are just waiting on the small details but it is nearly done. We have to wait a little bit longer but we are very close.

"He is very happy here and I have always supported him. Hopefully it will be done."

Benitez also brushed off speculation in this morning's newspapers linking Javier Mascherano with a move away from the club.

"I was talking with Javier earlier and everything is okay," he added.

"He is really pleased here because he knows the fans love him. He can't avoid big clubs asking about him because he is a top class player, but he is very happy here."

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard has overcome a groin strain and will be available for this weekend's clash with Newcastle United at Anfield.

:D Agger is one of my favourate players. Id be fuming if we ever let him go. Good to see though that the club are still negotiating new contracts despite all the other negotiations going on with the ownership. I was under the impression all contractual talks were to be put on hold whilst the future of the club was resolved with the owners. Maybe this means some headway is being made with that too? Who knows, I hope.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has agreed a four-year extension to his current contract, which will see him remain at Anfield until at least 2014.
The 24-year old, who joined the Reds from Brondby in 2006, has played 76 times and scored 6 goals, including his recent spectacular long range effort against Blackburn Rovers.

Agger joins teammates Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt who have recently committed their long term future to the club.

Manager Rafael Benitez said: "This is extremely good news for Liverpool moving forward and demonstrates our intention to build on the progress we have already made this season.

"Daniel is still young, but with great quality and will be a very important player for us in the years ahead.

"I'm sure there were many other clubs monitoring the situation closely, but throughout our discussions, Daniel made it clear that he wanted to stay at Liverpool and achieve success here.

"I'm delighted we've secured his future at Anfield."

Good stuff, I honestly think even though Skrtel is the sturdyer option right now there is no doubt in my mind Agger is the better player and could well mature into one of the best in the game.

Great news that Agger has extended,he is an important part of Liverpool's future.Spending money on contracts, rather then having to rebuild through transfers is a good way to save money and secure a stable future.

Played very well today, nice runs forward and a shot that seemed destined for the highlights

Made up that's he's signed obviously. I really thought he was off. Sami's gone but with Agger we're still pretty much ok in defence, but if he'd have gone too we'd be in a seriously dodgy position.

The timing of Agger's signing is spot on IMO. Rafa is in a pretty attacking mindset these days and Agger's creativeness in that respect has certainly impressed Rafa. Great news. We have already started loading our guns for the next season. :buttrock
