Dirk kuyt - Peace everyone

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has hinted at his frustration that talks over a new long-term deal for Dirk Kuyt have yet to bear fruit.

Not a lot of people know that Dirk Kuyt could have turned semi-pro at Dodgeball. Maybe.

Benitez revealed that negotiations over a new contract with Danish central defender Daniel Agger are at an advanced stage, but is concerned that there has been little progress with Kuyt.

''Agger is very close and he is talking with the club,'' Benitez said. ''There is no news yet with Kuyt but he is another player that I would like to get done as soon as possible. They have to be done before the new year.

''In each team you need people with quality, that work hard and with a good character. I want to do it as soon as possible because it is better for them and better for the club.''

Many will interpret Benitez's frustration over a lack of progress with Kuyt as a slight against the Anfield hierarchy with whom he has a fractious relationship.

Both Danish central defender Agger and Dutch striker Kuyt have just 18 months left on their existing deals, as does Benitez's own contract.

Kuyt is in a strong position ahead of any contract talks having been in fine form so far this season and is the club's top scorer with six goals.

Meanwhile, Liverpool co-owner George Gillett has admitted he has been embarrassed by the club's financial difficulties.

Gillett took over at Anfield last year amid much fanfare alongside fellow American Tom Hicks, and the pair made the building of a new stadium in Stanley Park a top priority.

However, after months of speculation over their ability to fund the project, it was recently shelved until the current financial crisis eases.

''You feel a responsibility and an embarrassment on occasions when you haven't provided all you might have,'' Gillett told The Independent. ''There's a level of embarrassment and you want to correct it quickly.''

Kuyt also hopes they close the talks before the new year.

The guy deserves his place in the team at the moment and deserves a new contract.

Amazing what happens when you leave the guy to play in the position he was bought for, Dirk is an out and out striker but is such a hard
worker you could almost put him anywhere on the pitch, i think the dutch call it totall football :D  But no seriously playing Dirk on the
right makes him look like he couldn't hit an horses arse with a banjo.

Well done Dirk keep up the good work this is what they loved you for at Feyenoord.

Nay way he was to the right of the goal how the fuck is he gonna score all the way out on the right of midfield :D .

No i'm not saying he will never score on the right, he just looks more likely not too, and defo looks much better
and more at home in the middle where he was bought to play.

I'm not a stat man but he looks a safer bet scoring goals when he drifts into the middle and not playing as a make shift winger.

It's a shame that there is a bit of nah nah n nah nah going on. Football has a habit of biting people on their erse when they get too gloaty. I've seen it many times over the last three or four years. Things appear to be going well and people start posting up "where's such and such now then :D ". Needless to say it all goes pear shaped and before too long, such and such returns with a vengeance, as do their points of view.

I think probably a bit of calm reflection is called for with "Dirky boy". Firstly, I think it would be safe to assume that pretty much everybody would accept that in his current form, he is well worthy of a spot in the team. His goalscoring record for a right midfielder this season is excellent, his workrate obviously right up there and even his often maligned first touch is more of a gather than a rebound (more than controlling it he kind of surrounds it). Obviously he is still paceless, and his awareness is a bit limited, but as a sum of his parts he has made himself into an important member of the team. I would think pretty much nobody would dispute that.

Equally though, all but the most blinkered would accept that during his Liverpool career there have been sustained periods of glaring, hair pulling out inducing awfulness. There have been times when he has been so bad, you kind of felt for him. Times when you hoped he wasn't selected fr his own sake, so he wouldn't have to endure the torture for another week.

Hopefully though, that is all behind us now and we can talk about the present and the future. Is he good enoguh to figure as a right midfielder in a title winning team? My feeling is probably not, and I certainly think he is well short of being good enough as a striker. He is though the best option we have on the right by a distance if Gerrard oesn't play there, and it would take a good player to replace him at the moment.

Just to clarify, not a Kuyt bash at all. More of a request really that people don't get too back-slappy about Dirk. He has played very well this season, but his poor games still outwiegh his excellent games in a Liverpool shirt I should think. It would take a sustained spell of considerably more than a qurarter of a season to put the ledger back into credit. I hope he does it, and I think he can if he keeps his confidence up. Lets not put the hex on him though by getting carried away.
