You should be able to tell from spelling and use of the language, although given the average spelling standard that may be difficult.
But then, like you say, why would anyone claim to be a yank who isn't? Some have claimed to be English who aren't, not known of any claiming to be yanks. Call him a dumbass, see how he takes it. Apparently it is a serious insult, just looks too stupid to be a serious insult. (broken down into what it means, not like c u n t or di ck he ad)
