simply not true
CRAZY SPENDING
Benitez has spent a staggering £129.7m on 36 players since taking charge at Anfield in the summer of 2004.
But there have been very few signings of real genuine world class quality. In fact, just one - Fernando Torres for £26.5m.
Benitez has spent more than Arsene Wenger in the past four years and yet Arsenal are top of the Premier League - and Liverpool will struggle to finish in the top four.
Benitez has spent a fortune and bought too many ordinary players - and his squad still only has three world class talents in Torres, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.
If its simply not true does that mean that out of the 36 players he has brought in the majority are excellent buys![]()

times have changed.
GH didnt have to compete with the financial power of chelsea.
and man utd's team this season is so much better than when GH was in charge.
so i guess RB's finishing one point behind man utd is better then GH finishing 2nd.

As I've pointed out many times, Ambrovich took over in 2003, Houllier didn't leave us until 2004. So obviously during that year Chelsea didn't have the millions to spend
Of course United winning the treble in 99, was nowhere near as good as this current side
Also, it's better to finish as high up the table as possible. I suppose if we finished 20th under Benitez, but only a point behind United in 19th that would be better than Houllier finishing 2nd would it? A 2nd place finish is better than a third place finish. Neither are success, because you only get success for winning things, but second is a bigger "achievement" than third.

I agree the notion that what matters is the position you end up. I agree Bigmick aswell when he says the points record thingy is overrated, because what matters is the position.
That's why I didn't understand how people were moaning about the "21 points off" stat yesteryear when Rafa was playing weakened sides in the league when we were through the cl semifinals and finals.
If we had been competing for the second place, yes, I'd fight, becaise 2nd is better than 3rd and it avoids you a preliminary round that changes all the preseason plan. But if you're third, and 12 points off the second, why risk players? That's why I don't understand that in one hand some people talk about the 21 points difference and do not talk about the third position, where as when it comes to the point record, then they stress that what's important is the position.
