So who do you want to replace him ?

bigmick wrote:I agree with Nanny to be perfectly honest here, it really is the case with managers that you have to wait until they've proved themselves on the way up and then actually in the top flight. This applies unless you go for a big name player who has turned to management, they seem to be occasionally able to get round the problem of motivating big name players by "putting the medals on the table".

All that said, the success of Johnson is startling both in it's magnitude given the rescources at his disposal, and the time it has taken him at each club. There is no doubt that many clubs below the top six or seven in the Premiership will be watching his progress very closely from here on in. Usually what finds some of these blokes out is the Aidy Bothroyd scenario where the percentage route oneish game simply doesn't work in the Premiership. Even Bolton under Allardyce had game breaking quality players and every team needs them in the Premiership if they are to survive.

The bloke who isn't my first choice should Rafa not be here next season but IMHO gets dismissed far too readily is Martin O Neill. Successful at Wycombe, a trophy winner at Leicester (incredible achievement when you think about it) bringing them European football, breaking of the Rangers dominance in Scotland and winning Celtics first title for years, taking Celtic to a European final where they were absolutely robbed by Mourinho's Porto (who of course went on to become European Champions the following season). At Villa he has rebuilt and revamped on a relative shoestring, taking them to the brink of European football and building a team who can give the very best a game on their day. Whenever his name gets mentioned whoever does the mentioning is laughed out of court which amazes me to be perfectly honest.

Mick and Nanny I agree Johnson must prove himself at this level before we can seriously take a look at him, but Everton took a gamble on Moyes and he's doing well considering.

Also Mick, I'm one of these who laughs at O'Neill. I've never rated him personally, but the more and more I watch Villa the more and more I think he knows what he's doing. I'm starting to see why people rave about him so highly. He's invested alot of money and time in young British players. He's taken a pretty average Villa side into a fight for fourth in just two years. But his football method isn't what I'm looking for and is why I don't want him as our manager. He's a longball merchant, like Mourinho. I'm looking for Liverpool to get back to playing football, which is why I'm so keen on Jol taking over. Also Gary Johnson gets his teams playing football, if you'll remember we were taken close by Johnson's Yeovil side in the FA Cup a few years back where we only progressed thanks to a penalty won by a DIVE by Harry Kewell. I want a footballing manager in charge.

4) If Torres has scored 60 league goals for Liverpool by the start of the 2011/12 season, I'll say he's better than Owen.

He took Bristol City up in his first season (after they'd failed three years on the trot in the play-offs) now in his second season he has them top of the Championship (old div 1 to some and old div 2 to even older like me and you nanny :D ) He also took Yeovil up in two consecutive promotions (conference then the current league 2) which is why they're in League 1 now. He's also managed at international level (Latvia ??? OK scrap the international level bit :D)

Bristol City look almost certain to be in the play-offs, if not automatic promotion this season. IF and it is a big if, he brings them up this season and keeps them up next season, clubs will be sniffing around for him. Just keep your eye out for him, that's all I'm saying.

Best put that in the 'keep an eye on him thread', not the 'who do you want to replace him' one.

Mick and Nanny I agree Johnson must prove himself at this level before we can seriously take a look at him, but Everton took a gamble on Moyes and he's doing well considering.

We shouldn't be using Everton as our benchmark now should we?

To be fair, you can only do so much with players of limited ability. His squad was hardly brimming talent.

I want Rafa to stay.

But if Martin O'Neill was to come to replace him I think I would be happy with that decision.

No we shouldn't be using Everton as our benchmark we should be using Liverpool as our benchmark.

Shankly came from a smaller club and he took us to league and cup glory. Paisley came from within and took us to league, cup and european glory. As did Fagan and Dalglish took us to league and cup glory.

But before anyone brings Souness up, he didn't come from within, he wasn't at the club when he was appointed manager. Bit funny how, when we go away from the club we begin to fail. And before anybody mentions Evans, Roy was trying to rebuild the mess Souness left us in, during that time he came up against a United side that was NEARLY as good as our sides between 1965-1990.

Shankly came from a smaller club and he took us to league and cup glory. Paisley came from within and took us to league, cup and european glory. As did Fagan and Dalglish took us to league and cup glory.

That was a long time ago and Shankly took over when we were failing in the second division, coming from Huddersfield Town, another team in the same division. The comparison to Johnson taking over now doesn't stand up because the circumstances we found ourselves back then were far different to those we find ourselves in now.

Gary Johnson isn't nearly qualified enough to be considered as a candidate for the Liverpool job. In years to come as you say, who knows.

Of course, it's a strategy that shouldn't be disregarded, but it's very unlikely to be considered, and probably rightly so in my view. If any one of us were in the position of appointing a new manager, they wouldn't go for someone outside of the top flight.

I think he's a good bright young manager LFC (Aidy Bothroyd) with some innovative methods by all accounts. To be perfectly fair to him (as I may have sounded dismissive which wasn't my intention) he did lose Marlon King after about a game which was a massive blow. I do still think that he will score goals in the Premiership, and once Ashley Young was sold from under his nose it really did mean that by a distance his two best players were no longer available to him.

I think Bothroyd will come back, possibly with Watford but if not with somebody else. When he does though he may find the need to apapt his methods just a fraction. Strict adhereance to percentage football without any quality players just isn't quite enough in the Premiership these days.

Even proven managers who have adapted the percentage method to incorporate good players can find it harder when asked to put bums on seats, as well as opposition strikers into the stand. The classic example of course would be Zara's friend Allardyce, who despite to the best of my knowledge never ever being mentioned by anybody who ever criticises Rafa is sometimes thown into the equation as a manager those of us who have doubts deserve  :sleepy: His biggest error it would seem to me was in taking the Newcastle job in the first place. That he wasn't given four months there never mind four seasons says probably more about that club than it does about his managerial ability, but the fact remains that if he were to ever prosper at a big club he would have to get his teams to play more football than Bolton did.

Bothroyd, Johnson, Allardyce though are decent managers in their own right. The way you judge such things of course is by looking at how well they have done given the rescources at their disposal. I suppose it shouldn't be too surprising that those who refuse to look at our own club with such clarity are incapable of doing the same with others.

As for Martin O' Neill though, I reckon given our money and a bit of time, he might be able to get us into a position where we're competing for fourth without too much problem. It just goes to show the cupboard isn't totally bare when you are looking for other options.

I would go for Mourinho. He is the outstanding manager out there that is free (as far as we know), knows what it takes to be successful in the Prem, and has a big enough name to bring in the big stars (if we get any money). I think he would come (before redtrader says it again :D )because I think he feels he still has something to prove in the Prem, likes Liverpool, and would soon have the fans eating out of his hand with a bit of success.

One good thing Mourinho may bring to LFC is the siege mentality.

"The World Is All Against Us So Let's Show Them What We Can DO!!!!"

I'm not sure if Rafa uses that.

I don't think Boothroyd had a great deal of funds to bring in quality players after they were promoted, and it's always difficult to attract players with good technical ability to clubs who are a shoo-in for a relegation battle. The fact that it was Watford, a club with a relatively small fanbase, and a stadium with yellow seats in it made it all the more difficult IMO. Credit to the bloke, I thought they were crazy getting rid of Ray Lewington, but he's done exceptionally well since his arrival. I wouldn't say he got found out, constraints were such that it was always going to be difficult for him.

On O'neil I agree, I think he's a cracking manager, but I think he'd take a while to make his mark and make a title challenge. I'd much prefer Rafa though.

:D

I wouldn't discount him if DIC took over, in that case, and with the backing they would likely deliver i think the ego would come charging over the channel just to have a go at getting one over Abramovich. Personally he is the only candidate who could achieve a challege next year, if Rafa were to be dismissed.
