Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I will always wonder however what he could have been if he hadn't killed off his own career by staying with Liverpool. He could have been captain of Real Madrid, Barcelona. Bayern Munich, Milan, Manchester United or Chelsea. He could have won numerous titles in any league, 10 CL's if he wanted and had an international club career that outshone any Zidane, Pirlo, Totti etc..  He under achieved. And if he had gone, he would have forced Liverpool to respond and maybe we wouldn't be in the position we find ourselves today.

What an odd thing to say, I guarantee you that when Gerrard was growing up he wasn't dreaming of captaining any of those sides (especially United!!!) and as he said himself after he turned Chelsea down even if he did go somewhere else and win a ton of medals after his career is over who can he show them to? As he said all his friends and family are Liverpool supporters, who is going to be interested?
It's not just about medals anyway Reg, this club probably has 100 players that have won title winning medals but very few of them (if any) will be regarded as highly as Gerrard. McManaman went to Madrid and won a sh1tload of medals but he won't be the Shankly/Dalglish type club icon that Gerrard will be.
Billy Liddell won 1 title winning medal and nothing else in his entire Liverpool career, in fact he spent a lot of his career in the second division but he is absolutely venerated around here, he is venerated because he was a truly great player that refused to leave us in our darkest days.

Come on Yakka, I think you've gone all sentimental over Christmas! Yes he captained Liverpool but you're saying a young lad doesn't dream of moving on and captaining  other great teams like RM or Barca? That to me shows a shortfall in ambition or at least not pushing the limits of what he could have achieved.

If he dreamt of it I'm sure he would have done it, when you grow up in Liverpool mate there's only 2 teams people dream of captaining.
It doesn't show a lack of ambition at all, that's modern baloney to justify players chasing money, Gerrard was ambitious alright it's just that he was ambitious for himself AND his club.
Going to a big club in a league where the deck is stacked in their favour isn't being ambitious, if anything it's a cop out.

I know what it was like to grow up in Liverpool Yakka, don't worry mate. In terms of ambition, I look at my own case working for 3 companies over 27 years, when the company didn't provide what I needed, I left. SG should have challenged himself to achieve self discovery to stretch his own limits,  to see how far he could have gone: he could have been the best of the best.

How can you equate your job or career with football Reg? Did you grow up dreaming to work for those companies? And what the hell is all that self discovery baloney supposed to mean?
What sort of Liverpool fan wants to see their best player leave the club? Do you want Sterling, Coutinho and Sturridge to go on a journey of discovery to Spain or Man United now as well?
And btw he is the best of the best, he is the best of the best exactly because he chose to stay, if you look at all the quotes from Zidane and all his other peers his loyalty is something they all admire.
Come on mate use your loaf.

His career is over Yakka so we're not talking about wanting SG to leave but the principle of whether he maxed his personal achievement. Ambition is ambition whether football or business so I think thought parallels are relevant. Personally, despite being scouse through and through, I would have expected him to roll the dice and drive for personal achievement rather than prop up struggling club through a succession of cr@p owners and cr@p managers.

hmm... I'm not sure it would be so rosy for Stevie G if he left Liverpool during his prime though. Owen was once arguably the best striker in the Premier League and one of the best in europe. If he had stayed at Liverpool, he would've become one of the greatest strikers in Liverpool's history. But now people rarely talk about him. Stevie G would have probably fared better but there is no guarantee at all. Ian Rush didn't have much of a success at Juventus.

Heard something today from someone who gets snippets of info now and again. Let's just say there are some personal issues which have influenced Gerrard's decision to move and goto the US

Leaving out Gerrard of the CL match at Real, was the death knell, I knew then he was gutted, humiliated perhaps. Rogers caused this, it is a disgrace, what will become of the team next season without him, we'll be no where. There should be a campaign to keep him, let me know if there is I'll be join 'in it.

Do not underestimated how far bak this will put us, if we allow mr liverpool to leave.

Im really getting pi'ssed off with the whole situation to be honest. Last week he was saying that when the manager sat him down and told him he wouldnt be playing every game, he knew he had to leave. This week hes saying that because there wasnt a contract on the table after the world cup, he knew he had to leave.
What the fu'ck is going on?? Theres supposedly been no fall out and all sides are happy, yet he sets this bomb off by telling the echo that the club could have kept him, but wouldnt ask him to stay???
I wish he would shut the fu'ck up to be honest and concentrate on finishing on good terms

The midfield has looked better without Stevie G playing zarababe. With all due respect to Stevie, he is no longer indispensable. He may still be the most talented midfielder in the team but his lack of mobility and his lack of positioning has allowed the opposition teams to overrun our midfield many times.

The manager can't be blamed for not having balls for accommodating Stevie Gerrard and disrupting a successful formation one game and in another get blamed for dropping Gerrard and forcing him out...

Stevie G's career is held in a very high esteem by fans and contemporaries. We should all stop fussing over Stevie G's exit.

I don't care if his legs are gone, or his slowed up, or if he's had a bad season, or if he's had a barney or not with Rodgers etc...it's going to be a really shit day when Steven goes.

He is saying that he wasn't offered a contract in the summer and if one had been on the table he would have signed it. He is also saying though that he feels that his game time should not be tailored or reduced in any way, he said he's injury free and fit enough to play every game  :Oo:
