why does everyone think our next manager has to have a proven track record or won leagues before?

None of Liverpools title winning managers had won a league trophy before managing at Anfield.

Our current manager who has won league titles before hasn't managed to win the league during his 6 years here.

Big European clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona employ managers who haven't won a league titles before (Guadiola, Schuster) and they won league titles.

Yes, experience is good, but so is a young manager with knowledge and passion.

For me its best man to take Liverpool forward. I dont care if they've not managed a top 4 club before, or not won a league title. Someone who knows their snizzle, good in the transfer market and has pride and passion, and can get the most of of their players. Thats what I want.

Equally damaging is when these high profile managers leave they take the entire backroom staff with them leaving the club completely vunerable.

I would be up for a British manager with a British bootroom that work for the club not the manager.  I´m not for Hodgson but he might be tempted and I might be convinced also if he was offered a 2 or 3 year fixed term contract to provide instant stability whilst we rebuild the bootroom.  He´d probably retiure after 2-3 years anyway thus wouldnt want to take a backroom staff anywhere. It would allow us to develop staff and groom someone for the managers role. After that all bootroom staff contracts are with the club, not linked to the manager and somehow containing penalties if they left to follow a manager.

That way someone like Carra could get on the bottom rung of the ladder and work his way up, or we could poach the Port Vale coach, or Middlesborough etc.. and they´d know they´re in a protected system with job security regardless of the coming and going of a particular manager. It would also serve to break this silly and very expensive system of management teams that are holding clubs to ransom at present and maybe more importantly stop managers like Houllier and Benitez bringing hundreds of French and Spanish players to clubs who never work out.

Lets rebuild from a home base.

Don't shoot me as I am only the messenger. But....

I got a text last night from a good mate of mine who's nephew was down at Liverpool for weekend and attended Steve Warnock's kid's christening. Whilst there he was told by Rick Parry that the deal to bring in Martin O'Neill is done deal provided Benitez leaves for Juventus. Carra also quoted as saying that the players want Rafa out. Warnock also quoted as saying O'Neill is a :censored: and the Villa players don't like him..!

Take from it what you will. I do not know my mates nephew but he has convinced my mate (and in turn me) that this may be correct.

The only way I would accept MON at Anfield is if he brought Milner with him..!

Benitez wants to stay at Liverpool says agent

By Cindy Garcia-Bennett, PA

Tuesday, 4 May 2010

Rafael Benitez's agent claims the Liverpool boss has still not received any offers from Juventus or any other club and wants to stay at Anfield.

Feverish media speculation in England and Italy has linked Benitez to a move to Turin and the 50-year-old is believed to be the number one candidate to succeed coach Alberto Zaccheroni this summer.

Benitez is also a reported target of Real Madrid, but his agent today insisted the Spaniard does not intend to leave Liverpool.

"We have not received any offers from any club," Manuel Garcia Quilon told Press Association Sport today.

"Benitez's aim is to remain at Liverpool and try to help the team improve with new owners.

"He is under contract and his wish is to remain at Liverpool."

The Spaniard, who is under contract at Anfield until June 2014, has a meeting scheduled with new Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton this week to discuss the plans being put in place for next season.

Broughton, the chairman of British Airways, has been brought in by co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to oversee the sale of the club.

Last weekend's 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea ended Liverpool's hopes of playing in the Champions League next season.

Juve will also miss out on playing in Europe's elite club competition as they have no chance of finishing in the top four in Serie A

We could be stuck with a manager that doesn't want to be here, that the players don't want to be here , that the board doesn't want to be here, and no money to either pay him off or make him happy to stay either.

Well, we can only hope it plays out like the Alonso scenario did.  A deal with Juve never happens and the player/manager stays for another year, plays a blinder and moves to Madrid the following year with his rep restored and his quality acknowledged?  :lookaround

So then we miss out on our first choice (Barry/Mourinho) this season and finish up with (Aquilani/ O'Neill) next season?  :D

No surprise there, he wanted to wait till he had strengthened his position by getting us to a final before having talks ...... sadly that didn't quite work out as planned.

The odds must be that he'll go. The club, Broughton and Purslow being the main players in this don't want to sack Benitez because of his hero status with many fans. The reality must surely be though that even without him getting the job at Juventus he will now go as without significant funding this summer he cannot possibly improve things much next year. Given that he would have to sell the likes of Babel and Benayoun minimum to be able to bring in more quality that would mean in terms of numbers the squad wouldn't be any deeper anyway. It's not certain he'll go but it must be quite likely.

What's all this fuss about demanding a meeting with the board, eh ? He has 4 years of a 5 year contract to run, so it's not as if he's demanding reassurances about his future, is it ? He has a cast-iron guarantee that he WILL be there at the start of next season, unless the club decides to get rid, in which case he will receive a great big phuck-off pay out, thank you very much...
I believe what he is doing is showmanship - echoing the players demands in the press, and now showing a sign of solidarity (at least, to the outside world) that the players and coaching staff demand answers. If he didn't vocalise what the players are also saying, that would definitely be the end of him, 'cos even if he were here at the start of next season, by NOT agreeing with the players, it would mean they wouldn't play for him...
I think he's a cagy little fecker, this man....

Ooh, it's taking shape now.  So, our 'first choice' goes to Man City and does alright but not spectacular, making us all realize that he might not have quite been as good as the hype suggested. :;):  I don't like the O'Neill/Aquilani comparison, though.  Surely, there's an Italian manager that would fit the bill better (Mancini, Rainieri, etc.?). :D
