Cordoba to undergo operation as Ronaldo continues recovery
Milan - Inter Milan defender Ramiro Cordoba will have to undergo surgery to treat a knee injury sustained during Tuesday's Champions League defeat to Liverpool, the club's website reported Wednesday. The Colombian defender, 31, damaged a ligament in his right knee in the second half of a round of 16 game Inter lost 2-0 at Anfield.
Cordoba is a mainstay central defender who joined the Italian champions in 1999. His club did not set a date for the surgery, but the player is likely to miss the return match with Liverpool on March 11, when Inter will be without his defence team-mate Marco Materazzi, who was dismissed in Liverpool.
Brazilian star striker Ronaldo, meanwhile, is set Friday to leave the Paris hospital where he was operated on last week for an injury similar to Cordoba's.
The ANSA newsagency reported that Ronaldo, 31, will continue the rehabilitation of his left knee in Paris until the end of February. His club AC Milan expect him back on the pitch by the end of the year.
MANCINI - WE CAN GO THROUGH
Roberto Mancini is 'convinced' Internazionale can turn around a 2-0 deficit against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.
Late goals from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard secured last season's beaten finalists a potentially decisive advantage in the last 16 tie.
Inter had Marco Materazzi sent off in the first half at Anfield and Mancini is upbeat about the prospects of reaching the quarter-finals.
"They put us under pressure from the start and didn't let us play much," Mancini told Sky Italia. "They closed down every space and pressed us very hard.
"They slowed down a bit as the minutes ticked by and we didn't risk much.
"It's normal to meet a few difficulties when you're playing away from home against a great opponent in a stadium like this. Unfortunately we paid dearly for Materazzi's sending-off. Everything was much harder with 10 men. With 11 against 11 it would have been a completely different match.
"Everything went well up to the 85th minute, and we held up without conceding too much. We should have been a bit more careful.
"We'll have to score three goals in the return leg and it won't be easy, but I'm convinced that it's possible.
"I didn't play Patrick (Vieira) from the start because he didn't have many minutes in his legs. I thought he could be more useful in the second half, and I was obviously hoping for it to be 11 against 11. However, he did well when he came on."
