Do City really need to sign anyone else? They've got an excellent team as it is, which is in stark comparison to our squad which is full of mediocre footballers or young, inexperienced players, with a dollop or two of excellent players, that's about it. We need to be making signings in the transfer window, more so than Fabio Borini.

Man City don't really need to buy anyone they won the title and where nearly 40 points clear of us - city's transfers are irrelevant to us

The only players not for sale are Gerrard and Carra and thats because they are too old and loyal
to be prized away, the rest all have a price on their heads.

We have to understand that rebuilding this team is not minor surgery and as we dont have owners
willing to pour millions in the only way to generate transfer funds is to sell the players we have. I
understand Rodgers states he doesnt have to sell but I think thats more in terms of the sound
financial footing the club is now on and not recruitment.

I know there are people that beleive that our problems can be fixed tactically and on the training
pitch but in realty we were very poor overall last year and this group needs quite a lot of fresh blood
if we are to make any notable progress this year.

I think Rodgers knows it and thats why he always leaves the door open to potential bids on any player
so he can get to work and maybe turn it around a little bit quicker.

Agreed I am sure that Borini may turn out to be a very good player, however, when you talk of an exciting player who the fans will love I think of (Ronaldo, Messi, etc, etc) now I am not suggesting for a second we can attract any players of this ilk but surely we should be purchasing some very pacy winger who can beat a few men and get a decent cross in (that would be exciting!) and we should be scouting far and wide to try and find such players, this transfer window is worse than Roy's and that's saying something!

We are going to be a mid table team (7th at best) and that's heartbreaking, no we cannot compete with the top 4 financially but to be so tepid in the transfer market is really frustrating.

Yes we will all support LFC for ever regardless of team put out or the division we are in but that does not mean we are not all desperate to compete at the top!

I think its BS. Selling one of your best players to gamble the money on other signings is not good business as far as I'm concerned. Matter of fact, I dont think any manager would see it that way either. 22million is not going to fund the signing of 3 or 4 top players and as such, its bad business. If anything, that money will probably go towards signing the likes of Dempsey or Allen who are both good players but shouldnt be anywhere near the same valuation as Agger.

What makes matters worse is the fact that we still have a number of squad players who are obviously surplus to what is needed at the moment. We have Spearing, Shelvey, Lucas, Henderson, Adam, Gerrard and Cole who all play the central role yet we still seem to be trying to sign Allen and Dempsey. If we cant get rid of some players in that area to fund the reinforcements then we might as well wait until we can either sell one or more of them or we have the funds to allow us the luxury of having 9 players competing for 3 spots. Selling your best defender when the main strength of the side is the defense is ridiculous any way you look at it.

I'd be happier with Agger staying and us limiting our signings to loan players and out of contract ones if the funds are as tight as some suggest.

I also think that you and other overstate the problems we have with our squad and the challenges facing the manager in terms of personnel. In Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Gerrard, and Suarez we have 8 starters who are good enough for a top4 spot. Instead of trying to break that we should be building on it. The main challenge for Rodgers so early on in his Liverpool career should have been maintaining that core and attempting to get the best out of them. Whether he does that by adding better players around them or getting them to play a different style is irrelevant but I dont see how selling Agger would help him turn our fortunes around 'a bit quicker' if at all.

The obvious answer is to keep him and sell only if we're reasonably confident that the money received from his sale would end up being of even greater benefit to the team than if he stayed. You can never be sure how these things will turn out but from past experience we know that the loss of one player can have a particularly drastic effect on the team as a whole -- Alonso being the classic example. While I don't regard Agger as important a player to the team as Alonso was, we nevertheless aren't in a strong position to be losing our key players and based on his recent form and his understanding with Skrtel, Agger is undoubtedly one of those. Breaking up that partnership at a time when the rest of the team is being restructured is a risky move to make. Could we even acquire a suitable replacement at this stage in the transfer window, given our current predicament? The closer we get to the start of the season and the more work there is to be done to improve other areas of the squad, the greater that gamble becomes. That's why my instict would be to keep hold of him and focus our attention on improving the areas of the team that need it most. What offers we receive and what options we have could, though, swing the decision another way.

Unfortunately, we now have a manager that has never spent or sold big and therefore this is all a novel experience for him - at LFC's expense.
Hense why BIG MONEY is being considered on a player like Allen - who is no ALONSO - remember when RAFA got rid of Danny Murphy and his replacement... NUFF SAID!!!!

Totally agree with the last 2 posts.

At this moment in time we should be looking to keep our better players and strengthen the areas we are weakest.

I like Joe Allen and think he is an improvement, but there are far more presing concerns still in the attacking areas.
If we signed Allen and went into the season having not looked at this i would be really worried.

Like LFC2007 has said the Agger Skrtel partnership last season was one of the plus points, breaking it up would be a mistake for me 100%.

We cant keep losing our better players and replacing them with gambles or inferior players.

Recipe for disaster.

The point is their need to strengthen is not very urgent where as ours is.
