Who's to say he doesn't or won't re-invent himself Kuyt style into an attacking wing back or something, you never really know. What you can make a call on though is his game so far, and how likely it is that he'll be able to be a success playing like that. Fairly obviously from where I'm sitting, he won't.
I've given the reasoning behind that thought process a few times now, and the ball is basically well and truly in Alberto's court to see if he can change the way he plays.
Totally disagree mick , the only thing Aquilani has to change imo is his tempo .Once he's fully up to speed with the prem he'll be fine. He's looked abit lost in the games he's played so far , but the intent and the football intelligence is there for all to see .Just not up to the pace of English football yet.
tempo and work rate.. lazy mofo needs a kick up the a$$ !
Well there coud be that aswell i suppose , but if Rafa kicked him up the @rse ,he would only get slagged off for his poor man manangement skills by the likes of your goodself .
UP THE PURPS !!!

You could name at least 8 other players then if thats what your basing him on, an theve been here a lot longer than him,
Well, i think in certain position we just lack in quality... My problem with Aquilani is that he does possess the quality needed and always have, but he's always been lacking in terms of work rate and urgency... Probably the reason why many people arent so sure about him and could very well be the reason why he doesnt make it in the English league..
The whole kick up the a$$ thing might work with a couple of players (Gerrard, Torres, Johnson, Aquilani) but for others like Insua, Skrtel, Lucas, Kuyt and the likes, im afraid their problems go a little deeper than that

So the lads been injured, yeah OK its dragged on a bit longer than expected which we are all fuc'ked off about! He has had a few appearances as a late sub and started a couple of games, that is all we have seen of him!
I think the term squandered and nail in coffin are just a little too harsh though.....just a tad!
Football pundits who have played the game as a career are saying its too early to judge the lad, given the fact he is not match fit, getting to know the team and coming from a different type of football.........................but people on here have their minds made up already
Squandered!

Roberto, Igor, Barry and "others"...
I'm not saying that Aqualini is a "bad" player. Read the post properly.
i said that Benitez "squandered" the money and he did. He bought an injured player to replace a significant loss in a season that was supposed to be "ours" (yet again).
That the lad hasn't performed is obvious, due to a combination of Benitez refusing to give him match time and the aformentioned injury.
I don't know if he's a good or bad player to be blunt and I didn't make that call.
But, Benitez still SQUANDERED the money however and Aqualini certianly wasn't the answer to the Alonso problem (also created by Benitez's appaling player management).
But if you can't judge wether Aquilani ia any good at this stage , which is fair enough like. Do you not think it is also fair to say we don't know if Rafa squandered the dosh until Aquilani proves it either way .
No. I think it's fair to say he squandered the money based on the expectations for this season and the resulting evidence.
Was Aqualini REALLY the only CM solution for the Alonso question? I would find that difficult to believe. Especially with 20 mil to spend.
Sure, the lad made stun us all in a few months time. But he may not.
However, I can only go on what I see before me.

I understand what your saying , but if Rafa wanted a replacement for Alonso who was as good as him ,how much would he have had to pay . Aquilani is a replacement for Alonso , but not the same type of player . The arguement goes ,that Aquilani plays further up the field and is supposedly more offensive . We will have to see on that score . Rafa wanted to change our style to a more offensive style with the purchase of Aquilani and as yet we don't know wether this will come to pass . If it doesn't and Aquilani proves to be cack i will whole heartedly agree with you and say Rafa squanderd the money.

Do you know what I find interesting? It's the number of pages this thread has managed to accumulate. And it's still growing, yet slowing down.
