He's pacier than Riera, yes. But what about the rest of aspects of the game?

My oh my i cant believe we are seriously discussing this !
He's better in every single aspect as far as being a left winger in the premier league goes...  Better dribbler, better crosser, better finisher, better positioning.. more assists great set piece taker.. more experienced...faster and more agile.. more creative and has better vision ... better all round player !
But hey if you think Riera is anywhere near as good as Petrov, and if he goes on to play anywhere near as well as petrov has done for City then hats off to Bentiez and Riera would be bargain of the season for us.

ManCity - Petrov - no

Remember to ask Atletico Madrid fans when they visit us whether they prefer Petrov or Riera. :)

Dont really care what Atletico fans think... i have seen both play and i think that if riera is worth 10 million then petrov surely wouldnt be sold for less than 50mill.. thats the gulf of quality betweeen the pair if you ask me. Petrov would start for most of the clubs in the world including the likes of ManUtd and Arsenal .. Riera wouldnt even start if he was at Boro...  :no

boo hooo boooo hooooo CHANGE THE RECORD!

lets all pick on the new guy before he even signed for us.

you or me or even rafa have not got a clue how this new lad Riera will shape up in the liverpool team so belt up and give the fella a chance

not sure what the point of that comparison is ace? I think the only one that matters is look at our team without reira and look at the team with him in the side, which team is better. Can't be bothered to worry about what everyone else has.

I actually think that the price, which is now stated as being around 8 million pound, makes this a rather good buy. He's been in around the spanish national team which won the euros, and even scored in their very important qualifier away against Denmark, as far as I can remember. Can't be all that bad, and we haven't exactly paid excessive (sp) money for him. Let's give the lad a chance, shall we :;):

If we get him - we can play Babel on the right and drop Kuyt (or Keane depending)

This'll help balance the team no end.

Only professional to - play in goal (41 appearances), Defence, Midfield, Striker, and later be Director and then to be Manager (winning a Championship) - at one club

If I had to recommend Petrov for any team in the world, that would be Real Madrid
Definitively one of the most exasperating players ever seen in Atletico's stadium

Aha.

For me the key point is Joe's. A player is good depending of course of his abilities, but also in the context of a team.

I think Petrov was a bit unlucky there anyway, with an important injury IIRC, but his pace, and his directness could be crucial in Man City while exasperating in the Calderon.

Torres was good in Atletico, very good if you're an Atletico supporter, but has really gone a step beyond in quality in Liverpool.

This is the problem about predicting impacts of players. Whether Riera will be what we need I don't know. But for what I've seen in the last years, he's a good player

well great then... lets go out and buy any left winger from any sht team for cheap and theres a chance of him becoming great 'in the context of our team'. And the likes of Robinho and Messi while great with their respective clubs could very well turn out to be :censored: for us so why sign them ?!

Sorry but i fail to understand that logic mate. A good player is a good player whether he proves it in a certain club or doesnt is a whole different story. Same tocken, an average player is an average player and whether he goes on to play well in a certain club or doesnt is a different story.

Way i see it.. us being a top club looking to add good players to our squad, we had better, more established options out there to consider ahead of Riera. Everyone has their own opinion and thats mine.

********
And about looking at the lineup with and without Riera.. well from what i have seen of Riera i wouldnt really call it an improvement. Just as we seem to be doing now having already signed PENNANT, BENAYOUN, BABEL, KUYT, GONZALES, ZENDEN...and played them down the sides yet still seem to believe we need 2 new wingers to start down either side, i think we'll be calling for a new left winger come end of the season.
*************
and Lee im not picking on the guy i couldnt care less about him or any of the players in that list you need to understand that different people support the club in different ways.. you chose to go all happy clappy hailing every signing we make then fair enough, i dont see anyone telling you to get a grip and let go of your sausage. just because i mentioned my concerns over a PROBABLE new signing doesnt mean that im picking on him or that im not going to back him up once he pulls on the shirt...

Dont know much about Riera but he certainly seems to have been something of a journeyman footballer looking at the clubs hes turned out for, and with respect not the elite of Europe either.

I hope he can come in and solve our problems on the flanks as much as anyone and he has to be given a chance to prove himself however it looks a chancey buy made more out of hope than certainty he will make a big impact at Liverpool.

Frankly given the kind of money we are paying its hard to imagine hes a world beater and usually it means they are not but fingers crossed he can exceed my expectation and be a terrific asset to the club this season.

Whats were the other options for left winger - SWP has gone to City for £21M - Milner to Villa for Undiscl Fee (prob £10m+), someone mentioned McGeady - no way is he good enough from PL - have seen him playing for Ireland and dont rate him - Petrov looks a good player but is not available - Downing is OK but again is he available - by this i mean do (a) the player want to leave his club and (b) the club want to sell.
No one know if Rafa has gone to these clubs and others looking to sign their left wingers and has been told - "Hands Off" - I would like to think he has.
Riera has now signed for us pending medical.  He is a left sided winger - this is his position - he knows what to do when he get the ball and for me, any player playing in his own tried and tested position is a better option than playing a player out of position - striker playing on the wing, left back playing on the wing.  The players natural tendencies have to be altered for him to play in a different position and this in affect changes the way the player plays.
Give the lad a chance - could be worse - we could have signed Saha :D

Think Petrov is a good shout ace, wouldn't have been disappointed to see us sign him . Can't say I even remember Reira at Man City, certainly haven't watched him playing in Spain. You may be proved right in your opinion of him but beating the fella with a stick before he's even pulled on our shirt and then getting a'rsey because some don't agree with your assessment doesn't change the fact that Rafa (who probably knows a thing or two about footy) has signed him, so despite your protestations lets at least give the fella a go. Worst that can happen is he turns out to be sh'ite and you can then give us all a big "I told you so".
