After watching Benayoun on the left on Saturday this is truly welcome news. I can hardly believe we have bought a real left sided midfielder...

Lets give the lad a chance.. (although I said that about Dossena on Friday and couldn't believe how bad he was on Saturday)

Does anyone know how tall he is.. I really beleive to be a success on the wing in the Premiership you need to have speed and a bit of bulk to ensure you don't simply get knocked off the ball ala Mark Gonzales!

Dun know much about this player but if he's good in spain , surely RM or Bacra "tap" on him or Man City sign him after the loan . What is Rafa is doing ? Is he wasting the Yanking money or the club money ?

1st he wants to sign GB for $18 and sell alonso to Juv or Goners ( he is helping other club to improve ) ... he clearing state that he wants " an english player" .... Albert riera is english player ??

2nd if he wants good winger from spain why he try to buy player like Silva, Joaquín, Vicente, Royston Drenthe or english wingers like Stewart Downing, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, SWP.

what is he trying to do ?

For his skill level we could get a young English Div1 player for a lot less money.
In his 15 games for Man City he could not keep up the pace in the prem games and looked lost.
He is not a Premier League player.

don;t think any English division one players could earn a cap for Spain. Lets keep this realistic.

"Espanyol winger Albert Riera has been handed a 72-hour ultimatum by which to finalise his proposed move to Liverpool.

The club confirmed on their website on Tuesday that talks with Liverpool were going well, but added that there were still some compromises to be made before a deal could be reached.

"This is a sensitive time, and we need to make sure we reach a solution one way or another," said Espanyol's sporting director Paco Herrera. "Everything is going well and a deal can be reached. The differences we have are ones we can solve and in the next two or three days there has to be a solution because there is no more time."

Espanyol had already received a £12m offer from Everton for Riera, who spent a spell on loan with Manchester City in 2006. However, the 26-year-old informed the Spanish club that he would not consider a move to Everton, giving Liverpool the chance to snap him up for less money. Reports had earlier suggested that Liverpool had agreed an £8m fee.

"There is a team which is offering what we have asked and another one which isn't, but the player is interested in the one which is offering the least," Herrera told Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo earlier in the week. "We will not lower our asking price."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez admitted on Tuesday that the Reds are in negotiations to buy the Spaniard but stressed that no agreement on either fee or contract has yet been reached."

Im not too convinced about this signing, would have loved Garreth Barry, but I hope he does well.

Bounanotte is the player WE should be signing. He's a tricky, little player who can go past people and can score spectacular goals.

I am realistic in saying that you could still find a better player for that sort of money, and there is top players in DIV1 just in todays football wold we seem to only buy overseas players andi am not on about liverpool, i am on about the top 2 League in england.

Andy, according to the club's web site, which is in catalan but I can understand -- or that I think -- the limit is 48h

I'll be monitoring that site. The club's site also says that Riera's future is further than closer to Espanyol, and the existing differences with Liverpool "can be bridged", as in, they won't pose a major trouble.

it's been a few months since i've had to talk, read or listen to catalan, sabre - but i can confirm that the phrase "Riera: límit 48 hores" translates as "Riera: 48 hour limit".

the catalans love to do and believe things differently to the rest of the world so the discrepencies don't surprise me one bit. actually, i've just remembered i have a few mates back in barca who go to see espanyol now and again. i'll see if i can get their opinions...

First things first, is it 12million euro's or 12million pounds ?

Secondly for those that think that if its a mistake its a cheap one....... If it costs us a chance of the league, it would be an expensive mistake in my book no matter what price we pay.

From what I understand ,I can't honestly remember him at all ..... probably old age catching up with me

, he is not fast, quick or even nippy, which worries me a little, especially if we have Kuyt on the other wing.

My thoughts exactly. It's amazing how people breath a sigh of relief once a player they don't rate (or know little of) is announced as being bought for a cheaper price than what they first heard, as if the coin was coming out of their own pocket, but that's another issue. Regardless of price or reputation, this player is taking up a important berth in the squad. Whether he is a big namer player with a big reputation that costs 50 million, or a lesser known player with little to no rep that can be construed as a bad signing and cost considerably cheaper, yet possibly over the odds, is irrelevant IMO. It's simply a case of him doing the job at hand regardless. Only time can tell this. It's stupid to judge the player otherwise.

the type of football he is playing in spain he dont need pace, when he come over her he found it very hard as he had no pace. he is a good player but only in spain.
he might be ok for some CL games

i understand what you are saying but he could not cut it here befoe and i dont see who he can change.
as you are saying he is taking up a big roll in the team, this roll should be taken by a player that we know can have pace or at least play well in the Prem.

there is no time and no game where he can make a mistake and learn from them.
