Yes, because they had never won a title before they signed those guys right?

How much did they buy Eric Cantona for?

How much did they buy Ryan Giggs for?

How much did they buy Peter Schmeichel for?

I'll tell ya, collectively about 2M

as for OWEN he was a class player that seems to have been crocked> that doesn't alter the point that fu.kin NEWCASTLE were given enough cash to outbid us for a player we wanted does it ??

Outbid or uninterested? I feel rafa was showing an interest because of certain fans, many fans wanted Fowler back but not as many wanted Owen. Also why spend that much money on a player who wasnt prepared to give rafa a chance and left at the first opportunity? I certainly wouldnt.

BUT they also bought Keane (RECORD FOR A MIDFIELD PLAYER)

Pallister (Record for a defender)
Bruce (huge fee)
Parker (big fee)
York (huge fee)
Cole (big fee)

So they didn't exactly do it on a shoestring budget

I will not be sweet talked by these two concerning the stadium the promise of Masherano or even if they offered Rafa a new five year contract they have taken the :censored: out of my club and us supporters by lying and making my club a laughing stock

So no matter how many pieces of silver these two throw at us for sweetners i will not be happy until they are out of our club and have taken Parry with them

MHP your debating your point very well mate, but in the present climate of todays football money is needed. You made a valid point there about Schmeical and Cantona, but that of course was well before the days of Chelsea changing the game finacially. Its gone through the roof now !

Having said that we've had our fair share of money down the years and IMO alot of it has gone to waste, both Houllier and Rafa have been guilty of poor signings, luckily for Rafa though the 10 million spent on Kuyt was his biggest mistake, then all the cheap and freebie ones after that, Morientes, Nunez who we got lumbered with Pelligrino and of course Voronin. Babel was alot of money and when compared to the money Fergie spent on Anderson that too seems questionable, but the lad may come good with experiance.

Our best bit of business done by both Houllier and and Rafa for me was the signing of Sami Hyypia, around 2 mill I think, then possibly Hamman for 8, the I think Finnan for a few million too. Rafa's best sigings have been Reina, Agger and Alonso. Crouch was a good buy IMO but never gets used so that could now be deemed as wasted money.

On the subject of football, I'm not sure whether Rafa can win us the league because of rotation and a few other things, such as not having a coach to work with on a daily basis. Also I'm not so sure that if given even more money he'll sign the right players, there the question marks for me.

I dont think Rafa wanted Owen anyway, TBH that would of been his second biggest money flop siging after Kuyt, so the Spaniard did well there not to go for Owen.

Really this is not about winning the title or finishing 4th even , it's not about a nice new stadium ,or if the 2 yanks have x amount of dollars and the arabs have y amount . IT'S ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE CLUB you clueless glory hunting prats. Yer see when it comes down to it ,this is what being a supporter is all about . you support the club and everything it stands for . It's history it's tradition ,the kit colour the badge ,the smell the atmosphere. Get it . If all you want is titles and leagues and £30 million pound players and you want it now .Well go and get them ,cos there are other clubs that have them whilst we don't .
I think i'll stick around for a bit with the people i know want the best for my club and not just another shiny new stadium . I'll stay here with the people who won't accept being sh!t on from a great hieght as soon as we see the pound signs flashing . The club means alot to me ,more than you would know ,i will not see it ruined by you ,your american idols ,DIC  or anyone .Take agood look at yourselves you know who you are.

Times have fallen for Hickspin a little bit. At least the headline writer did...

From The Times
January 26, 2008
Rafael Benitez given backing of Liverpool’s bosses at last

Rafael Benítez received the long- awaited public backing of Liverpool’s American owners yesterday as George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks sought to bring an end to the turmoil that has surrounded their regime.

On a day when Hicks and Gillett secured their immediate future at Liverpool by formally announcing a £350 million refinancing package and revealing fresh designs for the club’s new stadium, the vote of confidence afforded Benítez was perhaps the most significant development of all, although it has done little to quell the belief that the manager has no long-term future under the Americans.

Nor is such a charm offensive likely to be enough to win back the goodwill of supporters that has been lost during a turbulent eight-week period in which the Americans attracted fierce criticism for admitting that they had approached Jürgen Klinsmann, the former Germany coach, about succeeding Benítez as Liverpool manager.

As the Spaniard prepares for the FA Cup fourth-round visit of Havant & Waterlooville today, the apparent newfound commitment of Hicks and Gillett will no doubt be welcomed, although it is likely to be put to the test when they are asked to fund the permanent signing of Javier Mascherano. The owners are thought to have misgivings about the £17 million asking price for the Argentina midfield player, but a deal is expected to be completed.

Strangely, there was no mention of Gillett’s name on the statement issued yesterday by Kop Football (Holdings) Limited, the company the Americans set up to buy the club in February last year. Instead it was left to Hicks, once again, to speak for the two of them.

“Since the meeting with Rafa on December 16, at which some widely reported communications issues were discussed, Rafa has been assured that he has continuing and enthusiastic support,” Hicks said. “Rafa is under contract for two more seasons following this season. I am solidly behind Rafa and confident of the team’s prospects under his leadership.”

While the refinancing package with Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia, which will allow the club to commence work on a 71,000-capacity stadium in Stanley Park, is expected to provide some much-needed stability at Anfield, it is unlikely to mean an end to the attempts by Dubai International Capital (DIC) to buy the club.

Many supporters still hope that Gillett and Hicks may eventually sell to DIC, the private-equity arm of the Dubai Government, as doubts persist about their long-term tenability as partners, not to mention the level of debt being incurred. Of the £350 million, £105 million will be saddled on the club after Rick Parry, the chief executive, and David Moores, the former chairman, blocked attempts to load the entire amount. It is thought that Liverpool will have to foot the interest on the loans, thought to total £28-£30 million annually.

The other £245 million has been secured against Gillett and Hicks’s Kop Holdings company, with the Americans thought to have increased their personal guarantees from about £30 million to £55 million each.

It is intended that the new loan will allow them to pay off the £298 million they have borrowed in the 12 months since buying the club, absorb existing debts of £44.8 million and commence work on the new stadium, which will still feature an 18,500-seat Kop but is smaller than on the original plans.

With a further £300 million likely to have to be raised to complete the stadium by August 2011, however, the prospect of big spending on players before then appears to be slim.

Counting their losses

The most indebted top-flight clubs (including debts held by holding companies and internal debts)

Manchester United: £550m
Liverpool: £350m
Arsenal: £272m
Chelsea: £270m
Fulham: £159m
