I agree with you, Paul C.
Liverpool have been downright awful over the past 2 seasons and had been playing such dour and defensive football since Hoillier became the sole manager. At least in the past, we managed to shut othe opposition out and grind the wins by a solitary goal difference. Nowadays, we can't score yet can't really defend either.
I really can't stand another season of dour football with the same long ball game and relying on Owen to chase these balls and score for the team. Gerrard seemed to always be the one really trying with his non-stop running, chasing and long passes with the others looking so lethargic.
Let's face it, Liverpool's game severely lack entertainment element because of the fundamentally defensive style of play but I watch the live games (I am residing in Malaysia) every time out of my love and support for Liverpool and get knots in my stomach because of the way we play and seeing our attacks being so sterile.
I was lucky enough to have seen 2 live games, both at Carrow Road against Norwich in 1989 and 1990 when I was studying in England. Those days we had players like Whelan and McMahon running the middle with Barnes, Beardsley and Aldo in the offense and the untiring Ray Houghton supporting. That team can pass the ball accurately end to end, with even the defenders able to pass the ball better than the current midfielders. Nowadays, our players can't string more than 2 passes successfully and the style of play is so dour, lacklusture and the general attitude of the players is so defeatist.
No, 4th place finish is not good enough, the team plays really badly and lack ideas to break down well organised opponents and there are too many dead wood who gets to start week in, week out. Houllier has had more than enough time and more than enough money yet he belw it and we need a fresh approach from a new manager.
