Let's not forget even when Southampton had the likes of Lallana, Lovren, Clyne, Lambert, Schneiderlin, Shaw, Chambers etc they still finished below us. Why we gutted our squad to fill it with players from a team that finished below us God only knows.
You are kind of right there Yakka.
It's not that he sets his sights to low, it's the mere fact that no quality player wants to come here forcing him to over pay for average players and younger "prospects". Which now occupy the entire squad.
He is essentially a mid-table plodder than has been given a larger budget than most mid-table managers, allowing him to simply build another Swansea, here at Liverpool. The only difference is that this Swansea side he has built here is more expensive. Moyes tried to do the same thing at Manure but was quickly decapitated once the hierarchy realised their grave mistake and he was building just another Everton with their millions.
Out of the 30 or 35 players Bodge has brought in you can make the case that only Sturridge and Coutinho have been good enough. That's a shocking ratio but it all boils to the fact that he and the recruiting staff at our club have been underwhelming from the start. That's why Suarez and Sterling didn't bat an eyelid when they left and the reason why inevitably Coutinho will move on.
The worst thing is the lasting impact he and Ayre have left with their incompetence and arrogance. Rodgers pretty little sound bites don't mean anything when it comes to players choosing Liverpool as their next playing destination. It all boils down to two things; money and ambition. As an ambition-less club Rodgers can talk about "character" till the cows come home but it won't convince players to come here. We have had a bit of money to throw around but the problem is that we have spent it on mis-fits like Balotelli, who sadly are the next best thing. On the other side of the coin we have lost out on a raft of players (that could have potentially improved us) over the years and the one that hurts the most is Alexis Sanchez. Purely because of the circumstances and the fact that would have started propelling us up again. A lot of you have swallowed the "London lifestyle" nonsense but what it grimly shines a light on is this club and how out of his depth Rodgers has been all along.
There's probably a lot of truth in what you say, I remember one or two ex-pro's couldn't believe we missed out on Sanchez given how strong our negotiating position was at the time, let's not forget that Suarez had just signed a new £200,000 a week contract a few months before so it's not as if we had a clock running down on us like with Owen or Sterling.
We should have told Suarez yes we are prepared to let you go but only when we have a suitable replacement, if Sanchez puts pen to paper you can go.
We should have then sat back and let Barcelona and the players agents sort it all out between themselves.
Suarez would have been pi[ss]ed off if he missed his move but I think deep down he would have understood the clubs position, especially if we would have made it clear to him that we were genuinely prepared to let him go and it wasn't a stalling tactic.
We had just missed out on the title by a whisker and looked one of the most exciting sides in Europe (not to mention we had just qualified for the CL too) so I think Suarez might have knuckled down again, he was on £200,000 as well so staying wouldn't have been that bad a prospect.
