Dalglish in sensational Liverpool return

Published 21:08 04/05/10
By David Maddock

Kenny Dalglish could make a dramatic return to Liverpool if Rafa Benitez quits the club this week.

The Spaniard will hold showdown talks with chairman Martin Broughton within the next 48 hours, after it emerged Benitez twice cancelled scheduled meetings with the new Anfield chief.

There are fears Benitez will walk out to join Juventus, who have given him a weekend deadline to decide if he will accept their £5million-a-year offer.

There is a breakdown of communications between both parties which suggests a parting of the ways is becoming a possibility.

And if that happens, Dalglish looks likely to step into the breach on a temporary basis, with fellow Liverpool legend Ian Rush, to provide stability and breathing space in the search for a permanent successor.

Broughton is leading the search for new owners, an issue he hopes will be resolved before the end of the summer. Until the identity of the prospective investors is known, the club has no real idea of the package they can offer to any managerial candidate.

It would leave them in limbo, but Dalglish is prepared to offer his services to the club he still passionately supports, to ensure that an experienced hand is at the rudder, during the planning stage of the summer months.

The former Scotland international is revered as the greatest player to have pulled on the red shirt, and is idolised for his work as manager at Anfield when he retired from the team.

He returned to the club last season in an ambassadorial role, and Rush too, is now back at Anfield in a part -time capacity, and the pair will extend their roles to ensure decisions can be made.

Dalglish though, has no desire to take the position on a permanent basis, and he will cover temporarily, in the belief that the takeover issue can be resolved sufficiently to attract a top class manager.

Ideally, Liverpool would want Jose Mourinho should Benitez leave, but they know that the former Chelsea boss would only be interested if there were new owners ready to invest substantial funds in player investment, and to get the construction of a new stadium under way.

Other candidates include Bayern manager Louis Van Gaal, the highly-regarded Fiorentina coach Cesare Prandelli, and Fulham boss Roy Hodgson, while the Benfica coach Jorge Jesus is also on the radar.

The club know that Benitez is close to joining Juve, though he could still be persuaded to stay should Broughton meet his demands in their heart to heart this week.

It emerged in Italy last night that Juventus officials now want to change the role they originally offered Benitez, from that of a traditional English-style manager, to a more Italian-based coach working with a director of football.

While they are still happy to take him on that basis, they have made it clear they are not prepared to compensate Liverpool and are looking for a decision preferably by the end of the week, after feeling they have been messed around for too long.

Benitez will stay if he gets guarantees that managing director Christian Purslow finds his power base reduced, and also that he is allowed to sell whichever player he wants in the summer to raise funds he can use exclusively on transfers.

That is a controversial route, because the Liverpool boss is convinced star striker Fernando Torres wants to leave along with skipper Steven Gerrard, and he will not stand in their way, potentially allowing him upwards of £100million to rebuild his squad.

There has been some suggestion from both players’ camps that the pair are more likely to stay if Benitez leaves, which will leave Broughton with a massive decision so early in his tenure.

There is friction already between the pair, after it emerged yesterday that Benitez has twice cancelled meetings with the chairman, while at the same time protesting loudly that he had received no contact from the executive.

If Benitez feels he can’t act as he wishes in determining whether to raise money through sensitive sales, then the Hull game at the weekend could be his last, though the Juventus option becomes far less attractive for him, if he is not allowed the control he enjoys at Liverpool.

  nice one Igor  :D

Reading that article just about sums things up for me.

Juventus have cooled on signing Rafa since the changes at the top. No longer being offered a managers job but a coach's. No compensation from Juve. Suddenly Rafa has never received any offers (yet last week he was bragging about all the offers he has received) A quick shuffle, adjustment of the feet and change of face and now Rafa wants to stay

I think the choice has become stark and clear.

We can either keep Benitez and put up with his constant manipulating of the press, the club, the players for HIS benefit, or we can say enough is enough, you have made your fecking bed ..... lie on it.

I think it would be absolutely stupid to lose Gerrard and Torres for the sake of such a manager. Besides which who would trust him not to waste the money that they brought in?

If it comes to a choice between Rafa or Gerrard and Torres, Rafa should be out the door and up the street before his feet touch the fecking ground

Dalglish will do a great job to steady the ship, patch the holes in the sides and get the ship moving in the right direction once more.

Rafa may be a good coach, he may even be a great coach, but he is not a manager. We know it, the players know it even fecking Juventus know it.

Rafa DEMANDS urgent meetings with the Chairman in interviews while failing to mention that he has already cancelled meetings twice. Making it sound as if the manager is desperately trying to reach some accomodation while Liverpool are doing their utmost to avoid him. WHAT A LOAD OF CR@P. He expected to be in a strong position once we had reached another final ......sadly that didn't quite work out, but now Juve are sick of waiting and won't hang around much longer it becomes URGENT

We are Liverpool football club we expect and deserve better than a self serving, conniving, manipulating manager that has failed for 4 years now to win any  the trophies ,who has made mediocrity as much as we can hope for, who's made effort and control as much as we can aim for and completely forgotten that Liverpool is all about winning games trophies titles and respect..

Its become a real Monty Python farce.  Picture the meeting between Broughton and Rafa:

MB: 'Rafa, you're doing major damage to the clubs image whilst we're trying to bring in new owners'.
RB: 'Wheres my money, no money, I go. Fact'.
MB: 'No new owners, no new money. More stupid comments, no new owners.'
RB: 'The fans, they want me'.
MB: 'They want success, they want Torres, they want Gerrard, they dont want your constant public tantrums'.
RB: 'But T&T lied.'
MB: 'T&T always lie. Everyone knows that except you, Moores and Coco'.
RB: 'I go to Juventus, but Speke airport closed becuase of bl..dy volcano'.
MB: 'You dont go anywhere because you are listed as one of the clubs key assets. New owners want you so you stay'.
RB: 'I cant go because Juve wont buy out my contract'.
MB: 'So, I cant sack you, you cant resign, you whinge in the press every day saying you want something or you'll quit, yet I cant give it to you and you dont quit'.
R&B: 'So we cant go forwards, cant go back because T&T hold the cards not you, not me, not Gerrard, nor Torres'.
MB: 'So what is it exactly that you want to discuss Rafa?'
RB: 'Dont know Mr Broughton, I forgot. Is a fact.'

By the way, what would happen to the asset value of the club if Rafa, Torres and Gerrad actually left?

ONCE AGAIN dont you think this is a media campaign to scare T&T into accepting a lower bid and bu*gering off? Wouldnt the value of the club drop 30-40%? Imagine the drop in revenue.

Nah I don't think its anything to do with T&T (apart from the lack of funds) In fact the only board members who have said anything in favour of Rafa in all this sh!te have been T&T.

People said after we played Chelsea that it made them feel dirty, all this sh!t has a similar effect on me. I just want it over, so we can get back to what is important winning games and Trophies.

I don't like to see the club I love bullied, blackmailed, and manipulated in the way it has been since Rafa came. The quiet dignity of men like Roy Evans and Steve Heighway etc seems so far removed from the present circus that if you didn't laugh you would cry.

Moores and Parry may have been a grabbing fool led by a clown, but surely even in their wildest nightmares they never expected things to sink as low as this.

I think we have finally hit rock bottom..... things can't get any worse now (touch wood)

Moores and Parry gave us Rafa and the Yanks so are to blame for everything, peolple can blame Rafa all they wants for results on the pitch but not for killing the club, managers can be replaced and players but you have to have a club to do it first.

Is how many "f'uck off Rafa"  posters expect the fella to walk away from a possible £16 million payoff.

AS IF ANY OF THEM (or anyone else in this forum) IN HIS SHOES WOULD DO THE SAME !

So he stays and earns the £16m for the next 4 years or he takes the Juve offer and continues to earn £16m for the next four years, but according to the press if he walks NOW he will get a £5m bonus from Juve.

The way I see Rafa has to choose how much he wants now in cash. Taking the Juve job now give him £5m up front and a secure(ish) job for the next 3 years. Whereas he stays with Liverpool and risks getting the sack with a bigger payout.

No one in their right mind should have awarded a contract with that big a penalty clause.

So what are benitez's self interests? Not winning trophies? I believe some of us are getting abit carried away here. If the article speaks the truth in that gerrard and torres have made it known that it's either them or rafa then indeed we have a problem. It would mean that rafa haslost the dressing room. Then it would look quite bad if the purpose for rafa wanting guarantee fror transfer money from players is because he wants to sell them. But I don't really believe that this is the case. First of all, if rafa lost the dressing room, why did the players renew their contracts recently? Second, it might be that gerrard and torres wants to leave no matter what and doesn't depend on the manager, and rafa was making sure he would have sufficient funds to rebuild. Don't believe everything that's written especially without any quotes. And we don't have all the facts.

again mate , it has been known for a long time that gerrard and torres have been unhappy with Rafa.
a long time ago there were members on here say that if Rafa left then we would also see our best players go, that has never been the case, oour big names have been unhappy with the manager for sometime, but when some members pointed this out they just got shouted down by the pro Rafa lot.

In our last EL game there was a few reports that gerrard and JC had a big bust up with Rafa at half time over the way he asked them to play in the 2nd half, it was said they both walked out of the room and stood outside them walked out onto the field.

I did not think much of the report at the time as i was sure if this had happend the TV would have shown them two out before the rest of the team, but now some members on here have stated that they both did come out well before the rest of the team, around 5mins before the rest.

Sammy lee was the first person to have a bust up with Rafa over not picking Torres when he was fit. you got to look back at all this stuff to see why some of our big players dont think they can work under Rafa anymore.

Rafa needs to be sorted NOW, if we have any chance in keeping our best players,

If he stays and i hope he dont then he needs to be a joint manager with someone like Kenny.

someone that is strong but can also talk to the players.

There was also some rumours that during half time of the Reading game, Gerrard had a bust up with Rafa.  (gerrard came off at half time)
