BENITEZ CHOP COULD SEE LIVERPOOL STARS LEAVING ANFIELD

Tuesday November 27,2007
By Paul Joyce

LIVERPOOL risk sparking a mass player exodus if Rafa Benitez’s fragile relationship with the club’s American owners ends in the sack.

Benitez’s position has been undermined after his transfer plans were blocked by George Gillett and Tom Hicks and his tenure is hanging by a thread following a series of outbursts against the way the club is being run.

The repercussions of ending the Benitez era would be far-reaching, however, with senior stars such as Jose Reina, Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Javier Mascherano likely to consider their own futures.

Mascherano will not pledge his future to Liverpool while the prospects of Benitez look so grim.

River Plate are monitoring developments with Mascherano, who returns to Kia Joorabchian’s MSI company at the end of the season, with Barcelona and Juventus also waiting in the wings.

Goalkeeper Reina and midfielder Alonso have both regularly been linked with moves back to La Liga and their emotional ties with Merseyside are likely to be strained without Benitez at the helm.

Those type of story's are always going to come out Ciggy when something like this happens. It was the same at Chelsea but they have all settled down now and seem happy enough.

Anyway its all the one because he is not going to get the boot (I hope!)

that article is absolute and utter tosh, For example the bit about River Plate are monitoring Mascherano? ??? there is not a hope in hell of that, there is no hope River or any argentinian club could hope to match his wages in comparison to European clubs....That will not happen.  That is the worst piece of journalistic nonsense i have read in a long time. My god anyone with a basic knowledge of the economics of world football would now that.
Shame on the person who would write this rubbish and the person who would believe that it passes for journalism.

Im afraid it is. When the Glazers took over at Utd we laughed at their debt and how they would decline. When Maureen  "walked" we laughed at how the players would join him. It hasnt turned out as bad for neither of them has it? My advice to you Ciggy, meaning absolutely no disrespect whatsoever is, stop reading the articles that you are and make up your own mind what are the facts. Lets face it, it isnt much of a story the Derby boss getting the boot is it? And the press were left with egg on there faces standing outside Anfield getting a cold and offering nothing on what they thought might happen. Many people on here have there own opinion and i'll be honest when I say that your opinion means more to me than what is printed by somebody who is paid to tell a story.

Benitez keen to patch-up Liverpool differences
tribalfootball.com - November 26, 2007

Rafa Benitez wants to stay with Liverpool and is keen to patch up differences with the club's American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks.

The Liverpool Echo reports that Benitez is willing to make peace with Liverpool's American owners after repeatedly criticising their transfer policy over the weekend.

Benitez claimed that Hicks and Gillett didn't understand the European transfer system as he looks to add to his squad.

The owners refused to back Benitez in a statement issued on Sunday evening, leading to widespread reports that the Spaniard's sacking was a case of 'when' rather than 'if' on Monday morning.

However, the Echo reports that Benitez is 'ready to hold out an olive branch' to his superiors, but that may come too late to save his job.

The paper quotes a 'source close to Benitez' as saying: "Rafa loves it at Liverpool. He loves the people of the city, he loves the fans and he loves the club. All he wants is what's best for the fans - he gets frustrated when he feels he's not able to do that.

"But he is happy with Tom and George owning the club and he has enjoyed working with them since he came and he has no problem working with Rick (Parry) - all he wants is to be able to continue the job that he's started so he can continue improving the squad in a bid to deliver the title he knows Tom, George and Rick want just as badly as he does."

The source goes on to claim that the perceived reluctance of Liverpool to move on transfer targets has already cost the club at least one signing:

"The manager has got a few transfers that he wants to get done, one in January and two Bosmans in the summer but it looks like he is going to miss out on the first one now.

"That frustrated him because the first one was a centre half, a position he feels we really need back-up in. The frustration stems from the fact that communication has been so difficult with everyone being so far apart and in different time zones. But the fans should be reassured Rafa has no plans of walking away. He loves it here and his family are settled on Merseyside."

Atleast some encouraging news is coming out of the press. We need it in these tough times. I suspect it may be speculation again but on LFCTV tonight they id mention that Rafa was "holding out an olive branch" and if these yanks have any sense they will take it and move on with life.(please let it be so)

Thanks for the article  imouthep, finally some positive news about Rafa.  However I hope the part about us not getting a cb in January is not true, because we really do need to strengthen in that area.

I agree that the source is speculative as I have said but even sky ran a story stating that rafa beleives the row is not serious.I mean these are grown men in the end and hopefully they will come to their senses. I am banking on the fact that G+H really want money and if results go our way they will realise that there is no better man to get them.

"Rafa Benitez is confident his row with Tom Hicks and George Gillett is not serious, but has called on the Liverpool owners to understand the workings of the European transfer market".

All night on LFCTV it seemed that most of the guys didn't really beleive that the situation had reached the point of no return and I am inclined to agree with them. Hopefully liverpool will get a lot of wins under their belt from here on end and prove to the owners that rafa does know what he is doing. One's ego can only take you so far, good results will make them realise that they know "ily squat" abot "soccer" and if they want to make their money tey shuld leave it to those in the know.

Postby The Manhattan Project » Tue Nov 27, 2007 3:41 am

According to Manhattan's sources, Hicks and Gillett have given Rafa their 100% vote of confidence, as is the custom with club owners regarding problems with their managers.

So everything is resolved then. All is well.

I don't know if there is any truth in this (seems unlikely to me ), but my mate has told me that Gillett is trying to find a buyer for Hick's half of Liverpool, Hicks wants out, and thats why Hicks wont agree to any buying or selling until the situation is finalised. Hicks wants to wait till after we have qualified for the next stage of the Champs League before selling as obviously that would put the club finances in a better light.

Hicks and Gillett are both fuming with Rafa because his highlighting of problems at this time could ruin delicate negotiation and blow the whole deal.

It sounds pretty far fetched to me, how the hell could anyone know all that :D

I find myself agreeing with Leon now. Lock this thread until something happens. This is getting daft. How many have taken to this "RAFA WILL BE SACKED" rubbish because of what journalists or the average joe thinks. There is so much cack being spread its unbelievable all we get are opinions of people but not once have the board mentioned rafas position being insecure. I for one am getting really tired of it. Take this thread for instance, the amount of "IF RAFA IS SACKED blah blah" only the press and the gullibles have mentioned it. HE WONT BE SACKED ! let me make this point clear to everyone. Ciggy, for all her support for rafa mentioned how an OAP poured water over someone hanging outside Anfield trying to fish for a story and yet she herself believes them. ENOUGH ! NO MORE JOURNALIST RUBBISH from now on lets have the facts and nothing else.

Makes a lot of sense, though. Plus I think I read a post on RAWk that mentions that Hicks wants out.
