Summer signings - Good/bad/suprising?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby El Nino_#9 » Fri Jul 22, 2005 4:00 pm

So far we have signed-
-Antonio Barragan (undisclosed)
-Peter Crouch (£7million)
-Mark Gonzalez (undisclosed)
-Jose Reina (£6million)
-Mohamed Sissoko (£5million)
-Boudewijn Zenden (free)

and maybe still to come-
-Figo? (free)
-Hobbs? 0.5m
-Daniel? 8m
-Upson? 5m

If we sign the above four players, that'll amount to 10 new players this summer. I'm pleasantly surprised as I didn't expect such a squad overhaul by Rafa and thought he'd bring in 5 or 6 players altogether

what do you lot think of the squad so far?
do feel the 6 signings plus the possible other 4 signings will be adequate enough to liverpool football clubs standards?

Well I don't think our strongest 11 will be greatly improved from last season, but thats ok IMO. Where we struggled last season was with squad depth, and with people like Zenden, Sisokko and Crouch available from the bench, and Reina hopefully sorting out the keeper position, we are looking strong.

Don't forget that Cisse and Morientes are almost like new signings this season as well, with Cisse fit and Morientes available in Europe.

All we need now is for Kewell and Gonzalez to get themselves fit and we will have real depth in the side.

Don't expect us to buy Upson.

We might swap Baros for Deportivo's Jorge Andrade. Also we're strongly linked with Daniel Alves, another defender.

I would like to see miltio at the club aswell he is proven class. If not I would love us to sign matthew upson i know many people think he is rubbish but england international and all. He had a very good season with brums last season and I have noticed he's not prone to injuries  :)

If there was any interest the deal would have been made long ago. Birmingham and Upson's agent are keen to cash in on him but alas they get no offers. Upson is not good enough, pure and simple.

Yeah don't worry about it. He seems to get put of bed the wrong side every day.

the only worry i have about rafa's signings is that will they out to be like houlliers, over-hyped.
for example houllier believed that diao was the new viera, and that turned out to be a load of bollox!
so therefore could sissoko turn out :censored: instead of a new viera?

Milito deal has fallen through, Zaragoza want too much money for him and we're not willing to pay that amount [11.5 million].

Upson is an overrated piece of :censored:, he wouldn't be an improvement.

Have you seen Sissoko play? Compared to Diao, Sissoko is VIEIRA.

What other Benitez signing has been over-hyped? None that I'm aware. Benitez claims that Sissoko is the next Vieira because he's worked with him before. Houllier didn't work with Diao prior to him joining us, if he did he wouldn't had payed 5 million pounds for useless player.

Benitez hasn't said sissoko will be the new vieira he said he will be better than vieira. I really wouldn't worry about signings, because if they weren't any good why would rafa be buying them?

I trust Rafa is steering the club in the right direction, I was actually impressed with sissoko vs leverkusen he wasn't afraid to put a foot in and get stuck into the game and if he didn't have the ball he wanted it.
