Assuming Alonso doesn't play, the midfield duo will probably be Lucas and Masherano, Gerrard will play off Torres I think and Keane will be left to rue once again that after he scored two goals, where did it all go wrong. Aurelio will be shooed back into left back, Babel might just get the nod over Riera on the left, while Kuyt will come back infor whoever played on the right last time. All told it'll be four or five changes to the team (which was quite a strong one) against Preston. Further, I wouldn't be advising anyone to get too comfortable because that'll be the way for the next few weeks if not till the end of the season I think.

All that said, I fancy us to win comfortably enough and put the other two challengers for the league under pressure. I then take Man Utd to beat Chelsea with a bit in hand, and put the "Landeners" almost but not quite out of it. They'll then be staring down the gun barrel at having to go on a huge run of wins, and also go to Anfield and take the points. They aren't capable of either though with the team they have this season, and by the end of the month it'll be a two horse race, a dogfight to the finish between us and the Mancs.

I'm still giving us the maximum opportunity to rub egg all over my face by saying (and believing) that a combination of slight over styling and a reluctance to go all out for the win in tight matches will see us come up 3-4 points short, but a distance clear of Chelsea in 3rd.

I think the pressure will be on us when mannure play consistently winning several matches on the trot. If we can grasp the pressure and shove it up the rear maybe we will cope. I still dont think we will be many points ahead of chelsea though. Still feel it will be a 3 horse race and towards the last few months one of the 3 will jump out the race. By mid march we will have a clear picture.

Stoke City will prove to be a dificult agme even thow they seem to be strugling at the moment.
I'm hoping Alonso can be fit for the Stoke game as we never really got goin agen in the second half against Preston. I wouldnt risk Torres just yet into the first team has there are still a lot of imprtant matches to be played.

thrilling eh :D

I was with you until you said two men sent off. That just ain't going to happen........you forget Alonso's out injured.

Best team for me:
----------Reina----------
Arbeloa Carra Hyppia Insua
-----Lucas-----Mash-----
Kuyt-----Gerrard-----Riera
----------Torres----------
Subs
65' Babel on,  Riera off
75' Benayoun on the right, Kuyt up front, Torres off.
80' Agger on, Carra moved to RB, Arbeloa off

Hard luck for Agger and Skrtel but Hyppia has been amazing of late and importantly he's consistently looking like scoring at corners. Could have had a hattrick againt Newcastle.

Keane again unlucky but I think we play much better in a 4-2-3-1 formation and in that Keane doesn't really fit.

Benayoun is the other one who's unlucky. I think he's been really good the last month but Kuyt is Raffa's golden boy so he'll start.

I was with you up until you predicted Kuyt would be taken off  ???

I wouldn't be surprised if Torres and Keane both start, if not then possibly one start and the other come on for him. I'm not convinced we need Mascherano for Stoke away

20/09/08 Liverpool 0-0 Stoke

Reina, Arbeloa, Carragher, Skrtel, Dossena, Kuyt, Gerrard, Alonso, Riera, Keane, Torres

65mins Babel on for Riera (shock!)
73mins Benayoun on for Keane (at 0-0!)

No third substitution, then again it was Cavalieri, Agger, Mascherano, Lucas and Degen on the bench. Could have brought Lucas on for Dossena, switched to three CBs and played 3-5-2 with Babel up front and Benayoun on the left of midfield. I hate (0-0) draws with unused subs, it's not as if the XI - XIII used have exactly done brilliantly

I often dread Rafa's substitutions, the surprising ones are normally not welcome surprises. Then again we hardly had a bench packed with replacement strikers, he uses one striker option (Babel) as a wide player and left out N'Gog altogether.

I'd probably start 4-4-2 with the following changes :-

Insua starts for Dossena
Lucas in for Alonso (enforced)
Maybe Carra at RB and Hyypia CB (threat at corners)

And I would not take Riera off unless he was having a stinker or injured, use Babel as a sub striker since he could always then move to the left if needed and take Riera off and bring on a striker/midfielder ie it doesn't have to be position for position swaps. What I hate seeing is us needing to win a game, or simply see a FB brought on when we're chasing a game as it isn't obvious what impact the change is supposed to have.

no Insua or Arbeloa for this one, and possibly (or probably) without Alonso as well, and who knows if Torres or Skrtel are fit enough for 90 minutes

Carra didn't exactly look to great against Preston at RB so this might be Darby's best shot at a league game for a while, but I still doubt he would get the nod

I would think the XI will be:
                         Reina
Carra       Hyypia        Agger      Aurelio
               Mascherano
  Kuyt                          Gerrard       Riera

                     Keane
                                  Torres

like the look of that...except id swap Kuyt for benayoun...

Yeah, saw later yesterday that Insua's unvailable for a while (Feb?) While it may seem a game that Darby might get a game in, all games are ones we need to win and so experimentation may be a no no.

Carra's experienced and solid defensively, plus as I mentioned somewhere he's an extra header from set pieces - better than Arbeloa in the air, or maybe less lightweight is the way I might put it. Might be even more reason to try Agger at LB, four decent (or better) headers of the ball from set-pieces - at both ends.

Yeh not quite if Torres will be able to play out a full 90 minutes against Stoke. To be fair, Torres has only had 20 mins of game time in the last two months. Hardly full match fitness!!! I think that Keane may start and we will line up with a 4-4-1-1 and then Lucas will be subbed off for Torres in the 60th minute and then Gerrard will dropped back into the CM position and play a normal 4-4-2 formation.

Owzat wrote:I think it depends how early we score - if we score. Man Utd beat Stoke 5-0 at old trafford, they scored in the 3rd minute. Had our legitimate goal stood instead of being ruled out then we could have scored a few like the mancs did - or simply won - but the point is they got the early goal and took the poke out of Stoke.

I think so too...... an early goal is the key to whether the game is a comfortable one for us. Leave it late and it could become cagey as we push forward for a goal.

I'd guess that Rafa'll line us up like this.

                 Reina

Carra   Hyypia    Agger       Aurelio

Kuyt     Lucas     Mascherano      Riera
                Gerrard

                  Keane

I get a feeling that both Skrtel and Torres aren't going to start as they're probably not fully match fit yet so they may be used off the bench for Hyypia and Keane a little later in the 2nd half. May even see Babel or Benayoun for Riera.

C'mon lads!..... Time to pull away a little... The mancs are playing chelsea and hopefully a draw is on the cards. Arsenal are playing their traditional bogey team in the form of Bolton. No better time to show our full intentions. If and when we win..... the pressure will be on both the 2nd and 3rd placed teams to keep up which hopefully will result in either a draw or a victory for Chelsea.
