"It will depend on the investors," he said. "We want to keep the spine of the team. But sometimes you have to manage and you have to sell two or three players who aren't playing many games.

"I think we can improve but it depends if we can do the right signings and it is always easier to sign more players with more money.

"If you analyse what Fernando Torres and Jamie Carragher have said, they were talking about needing four or five players.

"The cost of a top-class player is about £20m. I think we need three.

"It's not easy for us to compete for players. We have to do almost everything perfectly.

"Look at other teams, they have plenty of players worth £20m who are not playing, but they manage because of the squad.

"Last year we tried to keep players and extend contracts and to add some players. It depends on the money available but the key is if you don't have too much money then don't make mistakes.

"Sometimes you bring someone who needs to settle down or they have a problem - this year we had a problem with Alberto Aquilani and his ankle - so you cannot guarantee anything.

"People can talk about this player and that player but they have to blend in because if you don't have £60m every year you have to sell."

Benitez has been criticised for allowing players such as Xabi Alonso, Sami Hyypia and Crouch to leave the club.

But he insists he was powerless to prevent their departures.

Benitez said: "I was listening to some fans and they said 'why did you sell this player or that'.

"I said we sold one tall striker - I won't tell you his name, you can guess - but his wages at his other team are double what they were here. If they don't play here and they can get double wages elsewhere they will think 'maybe I should go'.

"Hopefully in the future we will have more players coming from the youth system and from the reserves.

"This is the first year we have had control of The Academy. We have not produced a player in the last 13 years so that was a big problem."

Rafa should put himself up in the election. The way he spins things is better than most politicians.
What would his party be called I wonder?

To be fair Rock you do seem to get off on Rafa's demise
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road

I don't really know what to add with regard to Benitez. Overall I still think he's been better than Houllier but not good enough. I doubt he'll survive now unless there is a quick sale and whoever buys the club come out immediately to back him. I have a feeling H&G have leaked this announcement deliberately after the game the other night to undermine Benitez and avoid them having to ditch him after the Hull game. I would be amazed if the club goes up for sale into the summer unable to buy any players and Benitez decides to stay. I would have thought his departure now, regardless of what happens on the pitch and the race for fourth, is virtually inevitable. He's not going to hand around for several months unable to strengthen an already inconsistent squad in the hope that the new owners decide to back him. The question must be when he goes and what happens then.

If you do a comparison between Rafa and Fergie (ie who rotates more, who made more transfer flops, zonal defence, alienated players) you will find that Fergie is more guilty of the mistakes that Rafa is always accused of. The difference is Utd squad are far more expensive and fergie is idolized in the press. Bottom line is the manager probably only affects about 5-10 % of the result, the rest is down to the players and he with the better players wins. It is as simple as that!

It is not surprising that the order of highest payroll is also the order of the premiership standings (within a couple of places). We are sixth highest payroll and our position in the prem table confirms it.

Talk in the media of Berbatov being sold. I wander how much they will lose on him 15-20 million?
