RYAN BABEL to join Hoffenheim

Babel (love or hate him) is a forward player. HE"S NOT A WINGER.

I can see that, most others can see it...

...why can't Benitez?

Babel showed on Wednesday that he can get decent goals. Granted, he then missed another and hit a wayward free...but at least he way trying. I have to give him that and I'm in no way a fan of his, by any measure.

The fact is that Benitez has played Babel OUT OF POSITION on a continual basis and has ruined the player, to the point where he mostly couldn't give a shit these days.

What Babel needed was a run of games as a striker/forward...not being fucked out onto the wing for 20 minutes every so often.

Lack of numbers has forced Benitez to play Benayoon on a more regular basis and Yossi has shown the folly of Benitez's former approach to him. Maybe the lack of options will force Benitez to play Babel in a forward role more often now.

if that's the case, it's time for Ryan Babel to step up and take the opportunty to show what he can do in the position he wants to play in.

100% agree with you

Babel is a forward with a eye for goal he just needs to play up front alongside Torres to develop some consistency in his game.

Who else can be a strike partner for Torres at the moment? Voronin, Ngog? we paid a hell of lot for this player might as well use him.

It firstly has to be said that it was an absolutely fantastic goal, but does it prove anything? Does the scoring of it in the manner it came prove Babel really has something, or was it just luck? He had to gather it, run to his right at pace, get his foot around it and get tremendous power and accuracy into the shot, so could he do it again and what does it teach us about him?

For my part the goal shocked me to be honest, simply because I didn't think he was capable of such things. He scored a similarish goal against Chelsea a year or two back, but even that wasn't with the same purity of contact and brute power of this one. We knew he had pace to burn, we now know he can give it a good crack with his right foot and he can hit it on the run. Unfortunately we also know he lacks awareness and his first touch is iffy, but in all honesty is there anybody who thinks he doesn't offer potentially more threat to the opposition that either Voronin or N'gog? Put simply, who would you prefer to play against? I know who I'd be picking and Babel would be at the bottom of my list of favoured opponents out of those three.

If it is to be true that Torres must now sit games out, surely now is the time to give him a go, Babel time if you like. "Schtop" I hear you cry, but I ask you what is the alternative? My guess is that if Voronin and N'Gog play 500 games for Liverpool (and neither will obviously) they'll never score a goal like the one babel scored the other night. Options are thin on the ground for us, and he surely represents the best one for us if Torres is out.

He such an enigma isn't he? He has looked a bit brighter in his last 5-6 appearances as a sub and yet he was truly dreadful/invisible when given the full 90 against Arsenal the other night. Incredible goal against Lyon and I'm butted for him that it wasn't the winner because I think it would have lifted him no end. I know a lot of people would like to see him given a go up top and i'd like to see it myself, must admit I think his best position is on the right but he doesn't stand a chance of playing there with Kuyt a firm favourite. A few posters have advocated playing him up-front with Torres but if you think that is ever going to happen then you haven't been paying attention for the last 5 years. Rafa doesn not like playing with two out an out front men unless one of them is a target e.g Crouch and Fowler. He likes one up with another playing "between the lines" and he doesn't see Babel as a player who can offer this. I must admit i don't think Babel has the touch, guile or craft to bring much to this position but then neither does Voronin or Kuyt when they asked to play the role.

I hope the lad gets a start on Monday because if I had come on and scored a goal like that I'd bloody well expect to play the following week.

I wonder if Babels goal against Lyons caused anybody to revisit their assessment of his abilties, or whether it will just get accepted/dismissed as a flash in the pan?

No reassessments no. Babel has been mentioned many times by some team mates on the past. The likes of Alonso said of Babel he was one of the best dribbling, he does have some quality.

I think that from time to time we all have seen sparks of quality in Babel, and as such we've acknowledged them.

The problem is that he doesn't read football well, he doesn't take the right decissions more often than not, and his attitude when things don't go well isn't good normally.

"He's only 22", yeh, but I think that for that age you're really old to change some of your mind schemas, which is where lies Babel's problem so far. I've lost my faith on him and I'd require not sparks of quality, but a consistent season to recover the faith back.

Is he better than N'Gog and/or Voronin though, that is the question?

Flash in the pan for me Mick.

The lad's got quality undoubtedly, but Sabre summed it up nicely - he doesn't read the game, makes bad decisions and his head goes down when things aren't going his way.  It's near impossible to fix these things in a player.  We've had players like him before, ones that have talent but for whatever reason just can't put it all together.

As for his goal, it was a screamer, but when you blast the ball at goal as much as Babel does, one of them's bound to go in.  He did score another from a similar range against Chelsea in the CL, but that was pretty close to Cech and he should have saved it really.

better at what?

better at clever little lay-offs and contributing to build ups than voronin? - nope
better at showing effort and determination than ngog? - not really

what he is better at - which is why i think you'd prefer to see him stand in for torres than the others - is providing some sort of threat because you never actually know what he is going to do. as long as he can decide himself one of these days he might just do a decent job.

Depends on what aspect you're questioning.

Babel's problem is not his ability, it's his attitude and his football brain. Prime example of it was after he thrashed in that goal against Lyon, then gets a free kick outside the area and trys to lash it, and it goes out for a throw in, where the sittuation called for a quality ball into the box to put them under pressure.
