It's not invalid when you have Torres, Gerrard, Aquilani, Agger, Mascherano, Johnson, Reira and Aurelio all injured. That's more or less a full team of class players that haven't had a consistent start to our season since it started.
So you say the squad depth comes into it? Well invariably so. But how much would it cost, or would it even be posible, to have fringe players of equal quality to those names that I just mentioned, and would they be content at sitting on the bench? It's not possible for various reasons. And before anyone mentions City or Chelsea, think!
I don't think the point or expectation is that in one fell swoop we would magically replace our entire cack bench with kwalitee. That's not going to happen, not even at Citeh.
The point is, over 5 years, Rafa has traded and what-not dozens of players, and we are still nowhere near having a quality second string. I don't want to hear the excuses about funds etc. 'cos it doesn't wash. For the millions spent on individual players, they have more or less been knee-jerk reactions to a crisis e.g. getting Keane in.....and just count the number of players have left as soon as they arrived, adding nothing at all to the team, and the overall quality of first and second string has stagnated. After all the players he has bought, can anybody say the level of quality has improved ? Are we stronger in depth ? No way near it....pathetic.
67 players mate 60 fecking 7.not like he not had a chance to build a squad let alone the team we have now.
I like to see what Wenger has done with same money over last 5 years ?Lets be truthful his youth team would give out first team a good game if not beat us.ust for kewell as he cannot read

Doubt he knows who he is tbh.
60 players, of which most were either bought for dirt cheap and then sold on for a profit or loaned out. One thing about Benitez is that when he knows he's made a dud buy, he quickly shifts them out and rarely at a loss. Yes, that includes Keane and Bellamy. Voronin? How much did he cost us again? Exactly.
If there's one thing Benitez doesn't get credit for, it's ballancing the books.
Cheer up: we could be doing worse. We could be, oh, I don't know...Spurs? Spunk millions upon millions on players and wages, with the promise to break into the top four (not even thinking about winning the league, but just top four material) and yet failing to do, season in, season out. Yes, Harry Redknapp. Sign him up.
Red if you sat down in a room with Gerrard Carra Tompson Dalglish who ever and said Bruce , MON , Redknapp , Hodgson was sh.it managers they fecking laught you out the room you bloody t!t.

you can not count Aquilani ot for that matter Aurelio
so aquilani we new about him before we signed him and aurelio has been injury likley since we bort him.
we new and no both of the history of these guys.
so let get real you mean Torres, Gerrard,Agger, Mascherano, Johnson, Reira
5 players- 5 players is hard to be without, but the difference with us to other teams is in every postion of these guys we have n decent cover. Ngog, voronin lucas, that old greek guy. o please you are making out no other team can cope without injurys
No, I really do mean Aquilani and Aurelio. Last season Aurelio's form in the league was pivotal as was Xabi Alonso's. Who's Xabi's obvious replacement and who we know to have obvious talent? Aquilani. It's not Benitez's fault that Alonso wanted to f*ck off to Spain, is it? He handed in his transfer request FFS. Anyway, I'm confident that not only did Rafa buy a replacement, but a better player at that. He's more dynamic than Xabi ever was. But then again, when the heartbeat of the side leaves, it's never an easy task to replace it, and yes, I do believe Alonso was the heart of the team.
The way people are banging on in here, you'd think our first choice 11 was being battered week in, week out, when in reality the first 11 has yet to even have a run of two games to find its form.
Not Rafas fault you mean fact rafa pimping Alonso off behind his back to land wonder maker Barry(got wonder maker of FM2010 lol) didn'thim off ? come on lets get back to planet football here for a secound and think about things.
Emerald Red wrote:To have the quality of our first choice 11 in the budget Rafa has had over 5 years is pretty much a fair acheivement IMO. If you were to buy both Torres and Gerrard now, you'd have blown the whole wad of 5 years, or close to it.

Didn't Alonso make it clear he wanted to leave that season too? I think he did. Fact is, Alonso had it in his mind for a long time that he wanted to go back to Spain. Madrid certainly knew it, and as soon as they came knocking, he was always going to split. He gave us five seasons for such a class player, and cost Rafa only 10 million and made 25 million return on him. Not bad.
See, what the Rafa haters seem to neglect is that when we had the likes of Houllier and Evans in charge (of which I have the upmost respect for) do they think that realistically we'd have had players like Alonso and Torres even playing for us? I don't. Most likely we'd have been all watching Torres playing for Chelsea or Milan with envious glee, wishing we could have such a super star striker instead of Diouf or Heskey.

Ah the old spending debate, I was wondering when we were going to get around to that one. This is the bit where somebody proves that during Rafa's time as manager we have outspent everyone except Chelsea (and even then only marginally less) and then the argument switches onto how good everyone was before Rafa arrived.
It's normally good for a bit of knockabout fun though.
