Many posters say we should just sell him, and aside from the fact nobody wants to buy him I broadly agree. If and when someone does stump up a few million to take him off our hands though, where does anyone think they'll play him? They'll obviously bung him up top and see what they've got on their hands. If he from there finds a way to utilise his undoubted pace, good shot, ability to beat a man etc and scores regularly, we will end up looking a bit daft. Similarly, if and when Torres gets a tweak or a strain and we suddenly realise "feck me, we haven't got anybody else who can play there" we might then look at Babel and think we might have been better advised giving him a go a bit earlier.

Before anyone starts foaming at the mouth, I am simply making the point that as we haven't got anybody else who's any good we might as well try him out. At least he has pace (none of the others do), at least he can beat a man (none of the others can) and at least he has a decent shot from range (only one of the others, Kuyt, has). Kuyt has more awareness marginally, and probably a similar level of control, but we could do with him playing on the right and worrying about putting in a decent performance there right now.

If Torres gets injured it's Voronin, Egg Nog, Babel or Kuyt (who we need on the right) . That is the painful reality, and for me it's an absolute no brainer that for all his faults we've got to at some stage between now and then, give Babel a decent go up top.

you might have a point there bigmick, he's quite decent as a forward in Winning Eleven 09... in there he's just like what you described him... has pace, power and ability to beat a man... and a good shot on goal...

:)

That's where I got it from mate, I'm a bit of a winning eleven 2009 devotee or at least I was of the slightly older versions. I've got all three full albums of stickers, I think a company called Panini used to manufacture them. Curiously, about one sticker in every twenty seemingly was Colin Bell back in my day.

He wasn't a bad player if truth be known but his "swap value" was negligable given the proliferation of stickers with him in his Man City black and red striped kit, supply and demand you see. Looking back it must have been a fault with the print run, perhaps they let some apprentice loose and he got carried away. Pointless throwing them away after that I suppose, they figured they could just feed em back into the system and nobody would notice. It failed miserably as a policy though, everyone was onto it and you couldn't give him away, a bit like a latter day Dossena.

I'm glad to hear their still doing them though. Hopefully Ryan is a bit rarer than Colin Bell was.

Couldnt agree more with this meself, once again Brian Reade nails it

THE POWER OF BABEL? DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE.

BY BRIAN READE

It's the ones left behind I feel sorry for.

The David James and David Bentleys, who thought they were moving on to new clubs this summer but have to carry on enduring their own personal hell on a couple of mill a year.

And Ryan Babel. There he was happily under-performing his heart out at Anfield, living off an Under-21 tournament two years ago which enticed Rafa Benitez (or was it Rick Parry) to splurge £11.5million on him.

True to form he was picked for this season's opening game against Spurs only to do his usual Invisible Man impression and go back to warming the bench. And now it's dawning on him that he'll struggle to make the World Cup.

So the cool rapper does what comes natural. Blames his manager for not recognising his genius and floats a plan to move back to Holland on loan in January (thus picking up Premier League wages for Championship-standard work) and flatter to deceive his way to South Africa.

Here's some advice Ryan. Remember all the opportunities you've been given to live up to your inflated reputation. Then ask whether anyone believes you have.

Remember the team-mate who was unveiled at Anfield on the same day as you, Yossi Benayoun. Someone who also doesn't command an automatic shirt, but imposes himself on games whenever he gets the chance.

Remember Craig Johnston. The last Liverpool player to write a ©rap song. A man arguably blessed with half your natural talent, but who possessed 10 times your desire to knuckle down and succeed.

And remember the word that comes before footballer on your passport. Professional.

Then attempt an impression of one

I think babel is just one of those players who needs a Harry redknapp type manager to bust his balls for a season or so.Really knock some sense into him.Either that or he should give game up cos Tho I can say 50% of his problems is playing up the left I can say 100% other 50% is in his head , think the lad is just a bit thick sometimes.

Think of all the players who get career finishing injurys and never make it and god or what/who ever has bless him to this point with a strong body and he won't just force his way into the team.

thanks for that nanny the part about craig johnston is spot on for me!  :bowdown  i couldn't agree more with brian Reade on that part especially. it's all about attitude an desire, & understanding what a privalidge it is to play for LFC. Babel needs to get this into his head once an for all. for me he is in the last chance saloon end of.

That article sums it up. Babel, or any fellow red fan that defends his game, can't say he hadn't chances to prove himself. Lots of other reds would have liked the chances Babel had these years.

I don't think we needed that article to tell us what we all knew 2 years ago. Babel never has been and never will be good enough for this club.

Well Bav, now it's easy to say that, but Babel is still very young and he was younger 2 years ago, meaning, 2 years ago I thought we had to give him time. It's wasting the time he's given what has made me think this way.

brian has nailed it there ... the lad has no heart for the job. for the same reason i would like to see jay spearing play instead of lucas..

back to babel , i think he would do very well in a team where he can be the star, shootin all the time or get a bit more time on the ball, never been impressed with him apart from the u21 torno that he stood out in.

adam hamil has just left us and never got a sniff, dRives you mad at times

i think after his promising first season (played 49 games and scored 10) the consensus/majority thought if he could push on he would be a cracking player

I haven't written him off totally yet as our squad needs someone like him and weirdly he has seemed to provide something in the latter CL stages when we're desperate in the past   :Oo:
