I was impressed with the press conference. Rafa attitude towards this close season, concentrating on what we have was impressive.

When questioned about Tevez and Barry his "money money money" comment was pure class!

Great news that Stevie's signed up - I think most people know I love him BUT that sort of money really is obscene.

Lets face it - it's disgusting. I'm not trying to target Stevie here - more football as a whole, but can someone please tell me what 20 thousand pounds a week is going to do for you when you are already earning over six million a year. What the :censored: is he going to do with that extra money? What can he possibly need that for? It's ridiculous - there is a MASSIVE global credit crunch going on, there are grassroots clubs closing every day, why should footballers be able to drain so much money from the game? ???

There are clubs where 75% of their income goes to paying players wages. It's stupid. 20 year olds don't know what to do with millions of pounds a year. It's not even good for them, they end up gambling it away.

The agents are worse. They make a fortune without even doing anything. I can't believe Gareth Barry and Tevez chasing an few thousand pounds a week - when you earn these astronomical sums of money its just greed. No-one needs that sort of money to live happily. Greedy :censored:.

The worst of all though are the regulatory bodies - how can they not control this madness. Pathetic.

Rant over.

Well said.

Don't get me wrong I'm bloody over the moon that Gerrard has committed the best of his years to his and this is by no means a dig at him.

Maybe instead of the players getting taxed this ridiculous 50p tax, a 3rd of their salaries should go into the grass roots and help develop youngsters all over the country to be the next superstars of tomorrow. I would say that would benefit the game immensley and could come around full circle.

Think of all that money going towards centres were local kids could play all year around. Almost like an annex of the academy. Class

Completely agree.... and people complained when the club made so many long term employees redundant recently, what other choice do they have when they have to pay SG and Torres? Wages are out of control, we need a cap and a period of reconciliation to protect the long term future of UK football. Small and medium sized clubs are being forced out of business.

Been saying it for years Reg, a team cap is the way to go, and I agree with you 100%. The last time I suggested it somebody called me a communist (I'm not joking, neither were they incredibly enough) but it didn't change my mind. 25 million per club per season or whatever they settle on, and limit the number of players you can use during the course of a season as well. The second one is particularly pertinent now we've realised that you don't have to make 6 changes to the team every week in order for the players to run around a bit.

Agreeing on a wage cap would be quite a tricky one to overcome I think. Given the present disparity, the bigger clubs would be forced to cut down by a considerable margin, and how they would go about reconciling any cap with their current spend would prove very unpopular for obvious reasons. I suppose it could be phased in over a number of years to partially offset this problem, but the perennial problem remains; How far do you go?

How does the american capping systme work, anyone know?  Joe??

Robert Kraft didnt bid for the club because of the lack of salary cap.

You get a certain amount of money that is allowed to be spent in total wages for all the players and you must stay under it - think rugby league do it over here .

Every franchise has a maximum they can spend each year on wages, not all teams max it out but most do. The whole league is built on the concept of parity, the teams share out the merchandising and TV money equally, the best teams get the toughest schedule the following year and the worst teams get first dibs on the best talent coming out of the college ranks at the annual draft. Unfortunately it's a bit late for all (or any) of that in the football world.

Added onto the fact that in America, it's just that one league.  If the players were could enough to leave the MLS, they would.  If the premier league is capped, more players will go to Spain/Italy/Germany to play for money.  Sad truth :(
