If I had 50 million to spend I would not want everyone knowing so as to jack up the price of every player I am looking at. Maybe that is why Raffa is p1ssed.

What p1sses me of is we could have had Alves for 12 million a couple of years ago and we would not pay more than nine. He is now worth double.

Its interesting to see how the smart a*se owners will finance the stadium that is going to be built. I think we need to be cautious about this, maybe wait a couple of months to see what happens.

Skysports:

Liverpool have begun work on their new 60,000-seater stadium after the club were granted full planning permission by Liverpool city council.

The new ground at Stanley Park, which could ultimately be capable of holding up to 73,000 supporters, will replace The Reds' current home at Anfield and is expected to be completed for the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

The club has also received outline planning permission for a mixed use development on the existing Anfield stadium site.

Co-chairman George Gillett told the club's official website: "This is a significant milestone for the club and I am delighted that the design received full planning consent and that we are now on site.

"We have been working very hard over the last six months to move the details of the design along but this is the first tangible evidence for fans that a New LFC Stadium will be built.

"The stadium design is unique and will be recognised across the world as the Liverpool FC Stadium. It incorporates a Kop stand that will hold 18,000 fans and we hope that the stadium will be as noisy and atmospheric on a matchday as Anfield."

Co-chairman Tom Hicks added: "We recognise the importance of a new LFC Stadium as part of the wider regeneration of the local area.

"We have watched the council transform Stanley Park over the last six months and the ongoing refurbishment of houses in the Anfield/ Breckfield area.

"I am pleased that now the club has received full planning permission it can join the regeneration process with the commencement of enabling works."

PARRY HONOURED WITH DEGREE
Liverpoolfc.tv 28 June 2008

Rick Parry will be rewarded for his services to football on Monday morning when he will receive an honorary degree from the University of Liverpool.
The Reds Chief Executive will take his place alongside the likes of Elvis Costello, and Jose Manuel Barroso - the President of the European Commission - as well as over 4000 students at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall where an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws will be conferred upon him.

Parry, who has been at the helm of the club he supported as a boy for over 10 years, is delighted to be receiving recognition from a University that is so close to his heart.

He said: "I am very proud to have received such a prestigious honour and am extremely grateful to the University of Liverpool for awarding me the honorary degree,"

"Having graduated at Liverpool University in 1976, and in a city that means so much to me, this will be a very special occasion."

Hicks fund to buy plastic container maker Graham
1 day ago

DALLAS — An investment fund led by Texas Rangers owner Thomas O. Hicks has agreed to buy Graham Packaging Holdings Co. and take the maker of plastic juice and beer bottles public for US$700 million plus the assumption of $2.29 billion in debt and other costs.

The Hicks fund said Monday it expected a final deal in the next few days.

Dallas-based Hicks Acquisition Company I Inc. said it believed the deal was the largest ever between a special purpose acquisition company and an industrial company.

The container company will be renamed Graham Packaging Co. and apply for listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

Current Graham owners, led by buyout firm The Blackstone Group, will remain the largest single shareholder, with about 34 per cent of the new company, Hicks said.

The companies said the transaction is expected to close later this year if shareholders of the Hicks fund approve it.

Hicks valued the transaction at $3.2 billion, which included the stock price of $700 million, the assumption of net debt of $2.29 billion, fees and expenses of $55 million, and debt paydown of $156 million.

The company is based in York, Pa., and lost $206 million on sales of $2.49 billion last year. Sales fell 1.1 per cent from 2006, which Graham blamed on price cuts due to increased competition and higher costs for raw materials.

Graham went through a management shakeup in December 2006. Chairman and chief executive Warren Knowlton said after going public the company will pay down debt and increase earnings growth.

The company makes molded, rigid plastic containers for juice, beer, food, liquid laundry detergent and motor oil at 83 plants in North America, Europe and South America for customers including PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and Anheuser-Busch.

Shares of Hicks Acquisition rose nine cents, to $9.38, and Blackstone shares fell 57 cents, or three per cent, to $18.16.

THE Northwest Development Agency has refused to hand over a £9m grant for Liverpool FC’s new stadium project until the club proves it has got the money for the £350m scheme.

Steve Broomhead, chief executive of the NWDA, spoke to Kop Holdings – the owners of LFC – yesterday over the funding of the stadium.

The agency had previously agreed to provide a £9m grant for the scheme which includes regenerating the park and a community partnership centre.

While Mr Broomhead made clear the money is still available, the agency will not hand it over until “detailed evidence” that funding is in place to complete the project.

The revelation came as it emerged LFC co-owner Tom Hicks had agreed an unrelated $3.2bn (£1.6bn) deal with a plastic container company in the USA.

The Texan is understood to be keen for Liverpool fans to see that he still has the clout to pull off big financial packages, despite the credit crunch.
In January, the club’s owners refinanced the debt they took on when buying the club in 2007 in a £350m deal. It is understood that, included in that deal, was £60m to get work started on the stadium.

The Daily Post also understands that sum would be enough to cover costs of the build until around the end of the current year.

Last night, a club source said: “We are not planning on having the long term funding in place until the end of this year.

“We have sufficient funds currently to take us through the early stages of the project.”

Mr Broomhead said: “The NWDA is engaged in positive, on-going discussions with Liverpool Football Club regarding our investment in the regeneration aspects of the new Anfield development. The NWDA’s grant has always been dependent upon the club demonstrating that funding for the new stadium has been fully secured and we are currently awaiting detailed evidence that this is in place.

“Until this time, the agency will retain its £9m investment towards the project, but we remain optimistic about the outcome and are committed to working closely with Liverpool FC and other partners to bring the development and the regeneration of North Liverpool forward.”
