ANKLE INJURY RULES BABEL OUT

Holland winger Ryan Babel will miss Euro 2008 after tearing ankle ligaments in training on Saturday.

Babel is expected to be out of action for several weeks and will therefore not take part in the summer showpiece in Austria and Switzerland.

The Liverpool man sustained the injury a day before Holland play their final pre-tournament friendly, against Wales in Rotterdam.

Holland coach Marco van Basten has not named a replacement for the 21-year-old although he is permitted to do so once Babel has been examined by a UEFA doctor.

The Dutch will line up alongside France, Italy and Romania in Group C.

Their first match is on June 9 against world champions Italy.

An interesting development. On the one hand, assuming he recovers normally, he'll be fresh for the pre-season having missed out on the tournament. On the other, I think the experience could have helped his game. Let's just hope he recovers okay.

Absloute Sh!tter in my eyes for Babel, A big tournament like this can develop players and improve them massively, He was the one player i felt could gain most from this, Gutted for him, People might say well at least he is fresh for next season, B0llocks, i would much rather he plays 5/6 games of football over 3 weeks out than sit out injured for 6/8, Bad News and could struggle to be fit for next season.

Did my ankle ligaments 2 years ago meself and i wasnt playing football for 2 months, fu*kin horrible thing to do.

Horrible. He would've gotten great experience playing through the Netherlands' torture of a group stage.

cheek of it they want him to play in the Olympics for them now ,

Ryan Babel is wanted by Holland for their Olympics team - to give Rafa Benitez a double headache at the start of next season.
Flying Dutchman Babel will be selected for the squad to go to China if he has recovered from the ankle limgament injury picked up in the full team's Euro 2008 preparations.
Babel would be one of the stars of the 'young' Holland team and coach Ari Haan said: "If Ryan is fit he will be at the top of our list for the competition. With his qualities Ryan is a vital player for our plans." If Babel is called up Liverpool will have to let him go and he would be away at the same time as Argentinian star Javier Mascherno, who is lined up as an over-age player for the holders.
Liverpool could even lose Brazilian Lukas Leiva if the South Americans select him from their mass of talent.

Does Babel have a song yet? The last few times ive been to the game ive never heard a chant for him, even after he has scored goals. I know me and my mates have one for him which we think sounds pretty cool, just dont think it would catch on!

Let me know what you think, as i said me and my mates just sing it for a laugh whenever we hear that song or when Babel scores (It was ringing around the pub on saturday!) and just wondered what people think and if we could try and get in to catch on

Leaving aside the song for a second which I've no doubt could catch on (although I have absolutely no idea about the original song so don't ask me to sing it) Babel remains one of the most enigmatic players in the squad. I wouldn't have thought any player on the books polarises opinions quite so much as Babel (with the obvious exception of Kuyt). On the one hand you have stu's point of view that he is an absolute waste of space, then you have the "remember Henri" point of view, and everyone else in varying degrees stuck in the middle.

I change like the wind in my opinion on him. One minute he looks like a player, and the next he looks like he's never played before. His shot which won us the game on saturday was an awful piece of execution, he hit it straight into the ground, but it went in (note to those who like to quote me out of context, can you please put the "but it went in" bit in as well if you are going to use that line). At the end of the day, that is really all that matters. I've no doubt that had it hit the ground and ballooned over the bar, we would all have been slagging his technique but it didn't and we're not.

He is turning into one of those players who if it's not quite accurate to say he makes things happen, things kind of happen when he's around. It'll be interesting now we've bought Riera how exactly we are going to give Babel any time on the pitch. Assuming we aren't going to attempt to convert Riera to a right back or something similar, and assuming he doesn't do an impression of Mark Gonzales, you would imagine he is going to play regularly (Ok fairly regularly at least

) in the spot wqhich Babel took up last season. Are we going to see Babel leap frog N'Gog (sounds good that) as first change striker? Perhaps he'll challenge Kuyt on the right? (that's the end of the rhymes I can think of for now), but whatever, I'm growing to quite like him. We'll see.

Interesting comment Mick.

I saw a ManUtd fan slagging us ofrf on a forum saying the win was a flash in the pan against a disorganised Ure (yawn..) but he made an interesting comment. Said Babel is the one player that most Ure fans would happily see at OT.

Its a tough one, there's something flashing in the light, is it a mirage or is he really going to develop into something special who can turn it on every week for the full 90 minutes? We'll see.

For me he is too streaky, in that he is never consistant and struggles to make an impact in a high number of games. This will come with age and he is looking like a fantastic prospect. He has pace, power and skill, and can (to use an old fashioned word in the modern game) dribble.
He does need to play on the right more often. His crossing is not the best but he is getting himself in good positions more.

watch babel's performance since he came on over and over again (to make sure you don't miss anything), i'll even send you a dvd of the game so you can see it as much as you need to. if you can still tell me that babel has zero game intelligence, zero awareness and zero talent i'll get my sister to give you a kiss.

No player is going to hit his top level for more than 20 minutes in a match so we need to have him on the field for that 20 minutes because he is capable of scoring making something positive for the TEAM.

Why not start him on the right against Stoke and rest Kuyt for the Everton match which is vital to our chances this season.
