Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Well I think Parry is a bit of a t0sser based on my limited knowledge of the goings on inside the club, but if he gets under the skin of Hicks that instantly elevates him to temporary legend status in my eyes. I think we should launch a save Rick campaign, at least until the cancer has been cut out from the club, then the powers that be (whoever they may be by then) can look at Parry's situation again.

Completely agree mick this is the approach i feel we should take at the mo as hicks`s intentions in removing parry are not to further the cause of LFC , but merely to strengthen his own position.

Analysis: Only one of Benitez or Parry will survive  Tony Evans

While most observers would say that Rick Parry's biggest mistake was to sell the club to Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the Liverpool chief executive may come to believe that his biggest blunder was appointing Rafael Benítez as manager.

Parry brought Benítez to the club, but the Spaniard's relationship with his chief executive has been fraught. A Liverpool fan from childhood, Parry believes that managers and players are transitory and only the club endures. To Benítez, who craves control, this translates into a suspicion that the chief executive thinks the manager is dispensable.

The former Valencia coach has also complained that he has reached agreement with some of his transfer targets only to find that Parry, instead of tying up loose ends, has presented the clubs and players concerned with inferior financial packages to those promised by the manager, causing the deals to fall through. This is just one area where their different philosophies have caused their relationship to deteriorate.

Ultimately, only one of Benítez or Parry will survive. It is a sideshow to the ownership issue, but one that has serious ramifications for Liverpool.

Anfield fiasco: Tom Hicks could sink Liverpool
By Henry Winter
Last Updated: 1:28am BST 11/04/2008

Tom Hicks must never be allowed to board the ferry across the Mersey because he would only rock the boat. Just when Rick Parry attempts to keep the good ship Liverpool steady through another storm, Hicks lumbers on and threatens to capsize it. Madness.

In the dispute that escalated yesterday between Parry and Hicks, let us play spot the difference: Parry has Liverpool's best interests at heart while Hicks has Hicks's best interests at heart. Parry is a lifelong fan. Hicks is a businessman. Parry works hard to keep the club united and focused on reaching the Champions League final. Hicks picks fights. Spot which one you would want running your club.

The word on Merseyside is that Hicks demanded Parry's resignation as a tit-for-tat against George Gillett, the other co-owner who had ticked off Ian Ayre, the club's commercial director much admired by Hicks, before Tuesday's Champions League vanquishing of Arsenal.

Parry seems to have been caught up in the crossfire between two Americans. It does need stating that Parry is not football's top-ranked chief executive. He has certainly made mistakes. Liverpool have been slow to develop their commercial potential, although that pre-dates Parry's arrival at Anfield from the Premier League (four European Cups in seven years should have generated more funds).

Parry has not always enjoyed the best relationship with Rafael Benitez and has courted ridicule by wearing a Liverpool tracksuit emblazoned with his initials. A chief executive's place is in the board-room, not the dressing-room. But if he occasionally fails to see eye-to-eye with Benitez, who can be awkward and appears still to hold a candle for Real Madrid, then Parry is not completely at fault. Sporting replica kit is unwise for an executive, but such vanity does provide material proof of Parry's deep affection for Liverpool.

Those cyberspace mischief-makers who inserted the claim that Parry is known as "Coco" on his Wikipedia entry are being slightly cruel. The real clown wears a Stetson. It is difficult to see what Parry has done wrong in the period since the Americans rode into town. He pleaded for Hicks and Gillett to give peace a chance. He has sided with Gillett, but then most sane souls around Anfield would.

Parry cares about people at Anfield. When Steven Gerrard's autobiography (ghosted by this writer) had to be run by Liverpool, Parry read the criticism of him and Benitez during the Chelsea contract saga but did not ask for one word to be changed. He respected the captain's right to make comments, however unflattering they were towards him and the manager. Parry's stance contrasted with officials at some other clubs, who demanded that books by some of their players be amended.

Parry is a fan of Gerrard, just as he is a fan of all those driving Liverpool in the right direction. Hicks is getting in the way, and yesterday's fuel-on-the-fire antics hardly help. If he wants to dismiss Parry, then he should do it in the closed-season.

The mess highlights one reality: the sooner all football appreciates the dangers inherent in foreign ownership the better. If football ever contains more people like Hicks than Parry, then the game really will be heading to Hell in a debt-laden hand-cart.

Yeah like I say Peewee I'm definately not a fan of his, but the yanks (and in particular Hicks) are really doing the club huge damage in my eyes. Parry appears to be incompetent there's no doubt about it, but at least he's not solely interested in lining his pockets and at least he does care about the club and its heritage. I said earlier in the season (before the seeing of the light) when I was one of the posters who came out and said we should change the manager at the end of the season that the only justification I could see for rafa sticking around for longer was that the Americans didn't like him, I kind of feel the same way about Parry now.

Just for the record as well so nobody accuses me of wanting Sam Allardyce as manager or something equally intelligent and amusing, I think as of now that Rafa should be given another season. Regardless of how we go from here on in in the Champions League though, I would be all for changing the manager if we return to the nonsense of "Rafa style" in the early part of next season.

I agree with you there mate, in times of trouble you need to stick together and stick with what you've got despite it not necessarily being the strongest hand. Hicks is sacrificing Parry for his own tit-for-tat gain.

Why not have a Hicks Vote of No Confidence petition at the every home game from now til the end of the season and turn the situation on himself?

I was listening to Beaky on Talksport and he stated that although Hicks has blocked Gillett from selling his share to DIC, under the terms of the agreement he has 90 days to meet or exceed DIC's offer (thats what he was doing in London). If he fails then after the 90 days is up Gillett can sell to DIC.

Well how long is left on the 90 days then?

It actually sounds to me like Rafa might be acting like a bit of a pr1ck as well, if he is promising the stars in the sky to players before agreeing the finances with Parry then he is acting like a jerk and making Parry out to be the bad guy. Don't get me wrong I'm not the biggest fan of Parry either but I think he cares more for the club than Rafa does and certainly more than that complete moron Hicks does.
What the hell is wrong with Hicks why doesn't he just sell, I cannot understand what he wants, the economy is going to sh1t so in the short term he will not make more money from the club than DIC is offering. I am starting to think he is an Everton fan as he certainly seems bitter enough.  :wwww

I think it will be June, he has appointed Merrill Lynch the investment bank to drum up the financial backing he needs to make an offer for Gilletts shares.
I just hope the finaciers in the UK see that there is no future in backing him, the last thing hey would want is getting mixed up in any hate campaign waged against him. DIC stating they are pulling out just heaps more pressure on him. The guy is not interested in LFC just how much money he can make, I wish he would just take the money and go.
