Anfield co-owner George Gillett has received death threats from Liverpool fans warning him not to sell any of his stake in the club to partner Tom Hicks.

Gillett and his family have been targeted by a series of emails across the Atlantic, fuelled by The Kop's anger at reports he'll leave the club at the hands of his partner.

But Gillett insists he has no intention of selling Hicks any of his shares.

An Anfield source said: "George has assured the club he's not prepared to sell Tom even half a per cent, never mind one per cent.

"While the focus has been on what Hicks and Dubai International Capital want to do, it seems people have been ignoring the man who'll really decide who he sells his stake to."

Gillett is determined to break his ties on Merseyside after just one year in charge, but recognises the catastrophic legacy if he left Hicks in control.

But there remains cautious optimism the American ownership will draw to an inevitable conclusion in the months to come.

nice to hear that... perhaps Gillett does have some common sense...

Its never nice to hear that he is recieving death threats

Totally agree, that is completely out of order and will maybe lead to him saying FU to us and selling his shares to Hicks just to spite us, fecking idiots threatening him.

Yeah but I´ve lost track of all the goings on now, and it descending to the misery of death threats and one owner refusing to sell even half a percent to his partner shows how bitter the situation has become and a credit to the team for still winning.

I dont understand how all this cr@p is getting into the press, its like a soap opera with every twist and turn coming out into the news.I´ve never known a saga go on like this for so long with full publicity... someone someday will expose the full goings on and we´ll look back and shake our heads because if this is what we do know, imagine whats going on that we dont.

Platini cant keep his nose out of trouble making politics - its not his role to be trying to keep foreign ownership (and therefore money) out of British football:

Platini urges English soccer fans to oppose foreign owners
March 17, 2008

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -UEFA president Michel Platini urged English soccer fans to spearhead the opposition against foreign owners in the Premier League.  Platini believes top clubs are too willing to sell themselves - particularly to wealthy Americans.

"I am totally against that Downing Street will be bought by Americans and (also) clubs bought by Americans," said Platini, referring to the London home of the British Prime Minister. "I think the identity of the city is the identity of the club."

Nine of the 20 first division clubs are currently owned by foreign investors, with Manchester United, Liverpool, Aston Villa and Derby County in American hands.  For months, Liverpool fans have campaigned to force out American co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.

"The identity of big clubs are the stories of the cities," Platini said Monday. "I can do nothing by laws or rules. Your Parliament or FA (Football Association) can decide things. It's up to you (the English) to do that.

"It's a typical English problem," Platini added. "If people would like to buy in France, because I am a citizen of France I will do my best, but because I am not English I can do nothing."

Platini doubted that FIFA president Sepp Blatter's "6+5" rule, which would limit a club's ability to select overseas players, was feasible.

Platini and Blatter are set to meet next month with European Commission officials to discuss the plan, which is designed to increase opportunities for homegrown talent by forcing clubs to field at least six players eligible to play for the domestic national team.

"To be president of UEFA is not so easy because you have FIFA on your right back and the European Commission on your left back," Platini said. "OK, it's a very good fight 6+5 because I share the views of the (FIFA) president to have 6+5, but I don't know if it will be possible with respect to the laws in Europe."

Platini also appeared to differ with Blatter over artificial surfaces being the future of soccer.

Blatter has said FIFA's plastic field at its Zurich headquarters is the best playing surface in the world, but Platini remains a firm advocate of grass.

"There is more water to put on the field in Europe than in the rest of the world," the former France midfielder said. "It is difficult in Africa to have good pitches or in the north of Europe or the north of Canada or the very east of Asia.

"For the development of football, artificial pitches are wonderful but I have always played on grass. A lot of private owners want an artificial pitch because they also want to stage concerts, I think we need to take care about that."

Platini was speaking at a ceremony in northern England ahead of the UEFA Cup final at Manchester City's stadium on May 14.

Ive just been havin a nosy around concerning Hicks and theres some very interesting info on est 1892 concerning them other investors that he is supposed to be soundin out

This was posted by a lad there

Heard yesterday about Hicks 'other investors' may involve someone called Ross Perot or parts of his family, this has supposed to have come from someone who knows Jimmy Melia, who seems to be on Hicks payroll just lately, I googled this fella and he once ran for office and seems minted.

Only got this second hand so could easily be bollox.

And then this lad replied

It is clear that Tom Hicks is turning into Ross Perot Jr. – at least his pattern of ownership seems to be very similar.

If you recall, Perot lead the group that bought the Mavericks from Don Carter. Shortly after that, the Mavs spiraled downward until they were the laughingstock of the NBA. ESPN even flashed “Mavericks highlights – turn away!” on the screen during Sportscenter to alert fans to the horrible basketball that was about to be shown. Perot was all about real estate development and didn’t know anything about creating a winning basketball team. He (with Hicks as a partner) later developed the very successful Victory Plaza around the American Airlines Center after he sold the team.

Hicks now seems to be totally immersed in developing Glorypark between the ballpark and Jerryworld. Just as Perot always had more of a knack for real estate than the pick and roll, Hicks seems to be devoting more and more resources to development and less to winning. Our only hope is that there is a passionate baseball fan that can convince Hicks to sell the Rangers. This guy would have to overpay, because Hicks would not like the idea about “selling low” now that the Rangers are abysmal. The longer he waits, the worse the Rangers will get. They have in no way hit rock bottom, but that could be coming in the next year or two. I would suggest the time to sell would be immediately. In other words, the Rangers need to find their Mark Cuban. Say what you will about Cuban, but the Mavericks would not be where they are without him. I am not saying it should be Cuban, just someone like him. Surely there is a passionate baseball fan with hundreds of millions of dollars to invest.

Mr. Hicks – please see the handwriting on the wall and sell now, before the Rangers hit rock bottom with your continued mistake-ridden Ross Perot Jr.-like leadership!

His daddy was the one who I know because he ran for president twice, but I was too young to vote then so I am not sure what his dad's politics were, but he wasn't too successful. Jr. has had A LOT handed to him, but he has also helped expaned the family fortune in his own right (but its always easier to make money once you have it) yes its true that the Mavs didn't do so hot with him in charge and I think he only bought them because he was doing real estate stuff all around their stadium and it just made sense to also buy the team, Mark Cuban the definition of the passionate fan owner bought the club from him.

Ross Perot Jr. was in the Air Force which is pretty surprising and he is the first man to fly a helicopter all the way around the world

As soon as money becomes the main priority of anything it decends into chaos!

Football and money really dont mix very well! Why? Because football is founded upon social surroundings, the terraces and the people of the cities or towns of whatever club.

We will have add breaks interrupting play soon, I can sense it.

With Baseball you hit last place and stay there, there is no relegation. With football it is different and as you go down so does the money you get from tv rights as you drop down the divisions. The damage Hicks can do to Liverpool Football Club is far greater than the damage he can do to the Rangers and when you add he has no clue about Football it scares the hell out of me.

Take your socialist ramblings and shove them up your :censored: mate. Football has been all about money since the 70's and especially the 90's, without money we wouldn't have had the success we've had in the past, without money you would only ever have local players in your team so no Torres, no Mascha etc

Grow up and focus on the real issues, those being that we need strong leadership in the club, something that we haven't had for a long time.

It's gone very quiet but I found this very encouraging post on another forum:

Another piece off the Daily Post/Echo forums......originally off the Times.

Meanwhile, the likelihood of Hicks being forced to sell his stake in the club to Dubai International Capital (DIC) increased over the weekend as the Texan - whose co-ownership of Liverpool is highly leveraged - felt the pinch of the worsening credit crisis in the wake of the emergency bailout of Bear Stearns, the American investment bank, which is to be bought by JP Morgan, the financial services firm, for 6 per cent of its market value.

Publicly, Hicks maintains that he has no intention of selling his half-stake in the club, but DIC is thought to be confident that a deal can be struck with him and Gillett that would see the private equity investment arm of the Dubai government take over ownership at Anfield
