Tom Hicks surges towards 100 per cent ownership of Liverpool

Tom Hicks has raised the capital to buy out his Liverpool co-owner George Gillett and take a 100 per cent stake in Anfield.

The Texan billionaire has quietly been negotiating with his American partner over the past week, and is edging closer to a deal that will make him the sole owner of the Premier League club.

The Mirror can reveal that while Arab investment company DIC has been trying to persuade Gillett to sell his 50 per cent stake to them in recent weeks, Hicks has been raising money in the background to block such a move.

Now he has backing from some powerful business associates in the United States, and is ready to test the resolve of Gillett by matching any offer DIC makes for the shares.

The investment arm of the Dubai government is expected to make a formal offer this week for half a stake in Anfield, but Hicks and Gillett have a deal allowing the other to block the sale of any shares in Liverpool to a third party.

Privately, Gillett has made known reservations about his partnership with Hicks.

But there are signs he may defer to Hicks - who is the more powerful of the two in American business circles - and sell his stake. That would leave Hicks in sole charge of the club.

lifted from bbc sport

Al-Ansari was the man behind the takeover bid a year ago and looked to have succeeded until then Liverpool owner David Moores suddenly opted to sell to the Americans.

"It took me two weeks to get over that," said al-Ansari, who is a Liverpool fan. "But it didn't dent my passion - I still go to every match when I'm here."

why did moores go with the texans in the end
???

Thats the biggest joke.  They took for ever to find someone and they ended up blowing it.  Seems to me they enjoyed playing DIC and the Yanks against each other to see which one would bring the greatest benefit to them and not the club.  There can be no excuses for this and if DIC do get the club all those who put together the deal with the Yanks should go.  I dont want to see Morres and Parry to start trying to say how they have saved the club from the Yanks and how DIC will bring such great things etc etc.

The yanks will sell eventually.

They had no interest in the club from the start, they saw it was undervalued and took advantage, always planning to sell on in the near future.

They may have flirted with the idea of the new stadium to boost the clubs value to sell on for even more of a profit, but it didn't come easily to them and now they've lost interest.  In true yank style they're just trying to squeeze out every penny.  Hicks appears to be the more stubborn, but I'm convinced he also wants out.  All the stories about him trying to buy out Gillette is horsesh.it I reckon, probably planted in the media by his own people in order to put pressure on DIC to put in a bigger bid.

One thing's for sure, we need shot of these two clowns.  Parry needs to follow them out the door too.

Another twist in the tale...... DIC's interest finally officially confirmed.

From Soccernet

Updated: March 4, 2008
DIC confirm Liverpool talks

Liverpool's American owners have been in talks with Dubai International Capital, the investment arm of the emirate's government confirmed on Tuesday.

The Anfield ownership battle has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months, with the future of Tom Hicks and George Gillett shrouded in uncertainty.

The US tycoons are believed to have suffered a breakdown in their relationship since taking over Liverpool last year, with reports today indicating Hicks is preparing to buy out his co-owner.

DIC chief executive Sameer al-Ansari, a lifelong Reds fan, revealed investment talks had been ongoing but were being held up by the valuation of the club by one of Hicks or Gillett.

'It's no secret that we have been in discussions with the current owners,' said al-Ansari.

'It's not easy because the owners are in dreamland about valuations at the moment.'

Al-Ansari later clarified that one of the club's owners 'had come out of dreamland', without giving further details.

Only last week, Texan billionaire Hicks insisted he was not planning to sell his stake in the club, denying reports he had invited DIC to inspect the club's accounts in preparation for a takeover.

Frustrated by Hicks' stance, DIC turned their attention to Gillett, who is thought to be much keener on a sale than his partner.

However, neither of the co-owners is able to cut and run without the other's consent, a point Hicks was at pains to make last week when he told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: 'Not only am I not going to sell, my partner cannot sell without my approval.'

Also, DIC are thought to want a controlling stake at Anfield, meaning they would need to convince Hicks to relinquish part of his 50% of the club as well as buying out Gillett.

It appears clear the main problem preventing a takeover is the price DIC, the investment arm of the Maktoum royal family, are willing to pay.

It has been nowhere near the amount of money Hicks has been asking for - he would want to make a substantial sum out of selling the club.

Another hurdle to overcome is that the refinancing package announced on January 25 has loaded £105million of debt on to the club.

Of that, £60million is earmarked to kick-start the new stadium development plus £45million for future player transfers and to meet the club's working capital needs.

The takeover talk is being driven by the refinancing deal, believed to only lasts for 18 months, and so Hicks and Gillett are soon going to have to start renegotiating the debts.

Furthermore, they are shortly going to have to go back to the banks to ask for a further £300million in loans to finance the rest of the new stadium at Stanley Park.

I would not be surprised if that got turned down.  Its a nice profit but they may feel long term they will make more than that.

Dubai make £400m bid for LiverpoolMar 4 2008

EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

DUBAI Investment Capital has made a £400m offer to buy Liverpool Football Club and has given current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett until midnight to accept or they will walk away from the negotiating table.

The ECHO understands the bid would allow Hicks and Gillett to walk away with a profit of £25m each.

The offer follows weeks of talks between DIC and the Americans which have now come to a head with the Dubai-based consortium now looking for the ongoing saga to be brought to a swift conclusion.

Having had a dramatic fall out with co-owner Hicks, Gillett has indicated he is ready to sell his stake but has not yet accepted the offer.
Hicks is believed to be the major sticking point, however, and has been trying to raise the capital necessary to buy out his partner.

Reports today suggested that he now has the capital to do so but Hicks told the ECHO that such speculation is "premature".

The pair have been in talks with DIC separately for several weeks and the formal offer was made to them on DIC's behalf by Amanda Staveley, a senior partner of London-based investment firm PCP.

Staveley, a self-made multi millionaire who formerly dated Prince Andrew and who is representing the Dubais on the deal, delivered the offer several days ago.

It is believed she is reporting directly to Sameer Al Ansari and Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, the world’s fifth richest man and who is famous for his hugely successful Godolphin Racing tables in Britain.

Confirming the talks, DIC chief executive and Liverpool fan Al Ansari accused Hicks of "living in dreamland".

The ECHO understands DIC is becoming increasingly perplexed by the value being put on the club by Hicks who is seeking an offer in excess of £1bn for an asset which cost just £171m little more than 12 months ago.

It's no secret that we have been in discussions with the current owners," Al Ansari said. "It's not easy because the owners are in dreamland about valuations at the moment."

Al Ansari later clarified that one of the club's owners "had come out of dreamland", without giving further details.

The turmoil between Hicks and Gillett means the club is unable to function as it should - last week's signing of Javier Mascherano notwithstanding - and the two Americans have held totally different visions for Liverpool for some time.

Hicks recent public backing of manager Rafa Benitez is in stark contrast to Gillett's silence on the matter and that is just one example of the divisions that exist between the pair who are now barely even on speaking terms.

DIC want to give both Hicks and Gillett a chance to walk away from Liverpool with a sizeable profit but should they fail to accept the offer that is on the table by midnight they will walk away.

The news will come as a boost for many Liverpool fans, who have called for DIC to come back in and save the club from what is seen as a crisis beyond repair under the Americans, who were welcomed at first before relations soured amid the controversies hitting Anfield.

Midnight tonight.......I think we are fkd :(  I can't see Hicks selling , he wants too much the greedy tw@t.
