I've heard the same thing too. Gillett has pretty much already told the Arabs that he's willing to sell, but Hicks isn't. As I see it, Hicks will have to sell. It's obvious the Americans do not have the money required to buy new players and build the Stanley Park stadium. Hicks' position is untenable. His relationship with the fans and probably with Rafa is beyond repair. The only two good things that have come thus far from the Hicks/Gillett era have been Fernando Torres and the uber-cool and unique design for the new stadium.

"Tom Hicks is not a popular owner here in Texas either. I am a fan of the Texas Rangers baseball club and Hicks runs the club as a business. He has taken the enjoyment of going to the ballpark. He knows nothing about baseball and should stay out of it."

DIC granted due diligence, but Hicks still hanging on

Oliver Kay of The Times is reporting tonight, under the headline Liverpool’s American owners set to sell, that Liverpool’s co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr have granted Dubai International Capital permission to inspect the club’s books. But the headline is a little misleading, giving the impression of an imminent sale. In fact talks are still some way from being complete, as Kay’s article actually explains.
According to Kay, DIC are looking at the books “with a view to making an official takeover bid next month.” However Kay also repeats what has been reported heavily of late - that Hicks is reluctant to sell up completely. Kay writes that Hicks “plans to retain some of his shares and some of his influence at Anfield for the immediate future,” but says that “face-to-face discussions with DIC officials in Dubai and, more significantly, London last week have brought a deal closer.”
Kay reports that his sources in the US have “indicated that they are ready to demonstrate their willingness to sell by granting a period of due diligence to DIC.”
Kay also confirms what we’ve already heard, that Gillett’s half-share is likely to be sold by the middle of next month. What is still cloudy is exactly how the club’s ownership will be split at that stage. Gillett will be out of the picture of course, but the Hicks camp were maintaining very recently that their stake wasn’t up for sale. The question really was who would be buying the Gillett share - DIC, Hicks, or both? According to Kay, DIC are looking likely to buy the whole of Gillett’s share, and Hicks is also going to sell part of his own share to them: “Hicks is likely to sell only part of his stake initially, leaving DIC in majority control of the club but retaining some interest and his place on the board, at least in the short term.”
Kay does raise the possibility of Hicks buying Gillett out, but far from anything being decided, he reports that talks are only moving along slowly: “Hicks’s abrasive manner means that he is regarded as the most likely obstacle to any deal being completed, but discussions are said to be progressing “sensibly and professionally”, albeit slowly. Although Hicks could, in theory, buy Gillett’s stake in order to strengthen his own bargaining position, that is thought to be unlikely.”
In fact talks are moving so slowly that DIC haven’t actually agreed a price with either Gillett or Hicks according to the report. Kay says that Hicks and Gillett have valued the club at £400m, but that DIC would be hesitant to pay that kind of price if the Reds look like missing out on Champions League qualification for next season.
Kay also points out that DIC aren’t yet briefing anyone on how exactly they expect to run Liverpool if they do take the club over, saying nothing has been said, “beyond its eagerness to conduct a wide-ranging review of all departments of the club.”
The Hicks camp are certainly continuing to let it be known that they do not intend to sell up, in fact they claim they intend to take on a more active role at the club in the future. The impression they are giving is that they are unable to make any changes until Gillett is out of the picture, but they certainly seem to have a good few ideas in mind. It remains to be seen how good those ideas would be, if they ever get the opportunity to put them into practice. They certainly want it to be known that they don’t feel under any pressure to dispose of their half of the club.
Meanwhile Gillett remains completely silent. He’s not speaking to anyone about the club or his role in it, having dragged his son Foster back to North America after clearing his desk in Liverpool.
DIC clearly want to buy into the club, but it’s also quite clear that a price is still to be agreed. The opportunity to inspect the books gives DIC the opportunity to work out their own valuation of the club, and in turn to work out how much they are willing to offer.
If DIC pay enough money, Hicks can minimise his own liabilities on the club without having to sell up in full, and if reports are to be believed then one of his demands in that deal would be for him to continue to have representation on the club’s board. DIC would be majority shareholders, but Hicks would still have a certain amount of power.
Overall, this report of permission being granted to DIC for due diligence is good news and it’s the first real sign of progress in some time. My biggest worry in all this, is that maybe Gillett was the nearest thing to a honest man involved in the whole sorry mess, and that once he is out of the way, the door is open to Hicks AND DIC to do as they wish with the club.
While we all hope and expect DIC to become our saviours, there has been no indication from them that they are going to immediately remove the debt, or what their plans are for the new stadium. Will they want to re-examine the stadium design, the timescale for the build, or even worse case open up negotiations on a ground share?

A tad premature to be worrying about those issues Sainty, according to Hicks they aint even looking at the books.
Most important issue is to restore calm to the club structure, inject cash for new transfers and allow the players and manager to get on with their jobs without being hounded by the media. In whatever way, shape or form that comes in, I shall be grateful.

SPENDING time with the Hicks' might not be every Liverpool fan's idea of fun - but Jimmy Melia insists it was an eye-opening experience.
The former Reds star, who played 287 games for the club between 1955 and 1964, was invited by Anfield co-owner Tom Hicks to be a special guest at Saturday’s 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough.
The 70-year-old was flown over from his home in Dallas and although Tom senior didn’t make the trip, Melia took his place in the directors’ box alongside director Tom junior and the owner’s brother Bill.
Melia, who has coached youth football in Texas for the past 18 years, has been keeping a close eye on his hometown club in recent months as the Reds have made headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Delays over the new stadium, the admission the owners had lined up Jurgen Klinsmann as a replacement for Rafa Benitez and the recent £350m refinancing deal which plunged the club into debt have left supporters fuming.
With co-owner George Gillett silent, Texan Hicks has taken most of the flak and there have been growing calls for the Americans to sell up, with Dubai International Capital waiting in the wings.
However, while Gillett looks set to cash in his 50% stake, Melia insists Hicks is here to stay.
“It’s the first time I’ve been back to Liverpool in four years and it all came about because Bill Hicks is friends with the father of a lad who played for my football team in Dallas,” he said.
“Bill heard I had been a Liverpool player for 12 years and asked me whether I would be interested in coming over to watch a game and it went from there.
“I first met Tom junior about two weeks ago and then spoke with Tom senior last week.
“It’s been an opportunity for me to get to know them and I’ve been very impressed.
“From speaking to them it’s clear the Hicks’ love the game and they love the club. I wouldn’t have come all this way and spent time with them if I didn’t think that.
“Gillett looks like he’s going to sell his share but I know Tom Hicks is going to hang in there and make it work.
“He has owned Dallas Stars ice hockey team for 12 years and Texas Rangers baseball team for 10 years. He has stuck with them and says he’s going to stay with Liverpool.
“It would be easy for him to sell now and make a big profit but he’s not a quitter.
“He’s going to get the stadium built and find money for players in the summer. I can see him being at Anfield for 15 years.”
The owners may have looked elsewhere for a manager back in November but Melia is convinced Benitez now has Hicks’ full backing.
“When it came out they had held talks with Klinsmann the fans were angry but Tom was very honest about it,” he said.
“After having a bit of a fall out, the fear was that Benitez might leave and they had to have a top manager in place in case that happened.
“Communication between Tom and Rafa back then was a problem but I know it’s much improved now. Tom likes Rafa, he believes in him and he wants stability at the club.”
Melia says the Hicks’ are the first to admit they have made mistakes during the past 12 months and the latest was Tom junior’s decision to go for a drink in the Sandon pub near Anfield after Saturday’s match.
The Reds director had to beat a hasty retreat after being confronted by angry supporters.
“Tommy made the wrong decision and it was a bad move on his part,” Melia said.
“After a game, when the drinks are flowing, passions run high.
“Bill Hicks had told him not to go in there. They had all had a good day with no hassle at the ground.
“But Tommy wanted to feel the atmosphere in the Sandon and see how the fans felt about things – he certainly found out!
“The thing is Liverpool supporters are so passionate and that’s something the Americans have struggled to understand.
“The club is their life, it’s all Scousers talk about and they are desperate to see the team do well.
“You don’t get sports fans in America in love with the game like people are here.
“That’s one of the reasons why the Hicks’ like it so much but it has taken a lot of getting used to.
“One of the big problems for them has been that the communication has not been good and that’s something they are trying to improve on.”
The fact that the club will have to pay around £30million a year in interest payments to service the £350m loan taken out last month is a major concern for Reds supporters.
But Melia believes the idea that any new owner would risk their own personal fortune is unrealistic.
He said: “I’m no expert but nobody in business puts all their own cash into something – they use the banks’ money to get investments going.
“There aren’t many Abramovichs about and nobody is going to come in and just throw money at it.
“It’s not easy to find people prepared to come in and do what needs to be done at Liverpool.
“Tom Hicks is committed to getting the stadium built and finding money for players to improve the team.
“The most important thing for me is signings because the club is on the verge of losing their place in the top four. There are a lot of teams fighting for fourth place and it’s vital Liverpool strengthen for next season.
“I know what the Americans need to do on the football side and I’m more than happy to help them with advice on that.
“If I can help communication between the two parties then great. Now I’ve had the chance to come over and see things for myself I’m hoping to meet up with Tom senior soon.

Bill Hicks was a fine comedian, but he's dead, therefore not qualified to run a football team.

For me any situation in the short term that removes Hicks from a controlling position in the club will be a major step forward (hopefully). In the short term I think I could live with a situation were DIC had the majority ownership and Hicks had a lesser presence on the board. I know in that situation he would just be there lining his own pockets but I think that no matter what happens that is all he's here for.
A 50-50 ownership between DIC and Hicks would be less favourable as you just know that Hicks would be doing everything in his power to hinder any plans of DIC if they didn't benefit him personally. That I can see only leading to even more off the field troubles and no better than what we are going through now.

I for one just wish the whole thing would come to an end its like one big bad dream. Most of us welcomed G and H and were quite hostile towards DIC when they/we pulled out last time ( no pun intended ) we got carried away with the thought that we would finally have the financial muscle to compete with the big spenders in the Premier League but we became a laughing stock, after mocking Man U for having their American owners we go and get ourselves some, and who is laughing now ?.
Obviously no one could have expected things to turn out the way they have but if this has taught me one thing its that I for one will not be getting carried away with the thought of DIC buying our club,I am looking for more than a way to get rid of G and H it has to be something that is right for the club and its going to take more than the fact one of them is a Liverpool Fan to convince me that they will be any different than G and H.
There is not much we can do now but sit back and wait and see what happens and hopefully it will turn out to be the right choice this time, I don't think I can go through all this again
